To avoid zombies being drawn by noise and catching them off guard, the three of them worked together to close the double glass doors of the delivery station.
This way, even if zombies came by, they wouldn’t be able to get in immediately. At the same time, the glass doors allowed them to observe what was happening outside.
Once the doors were shut, Yu Hongfei pulled out three black devices from the backpack he carried with him and handed one each to Lin Chu and Zheng Ziyu.
“These are headlamps I got in the previous world. Wear them on your heads—it’ll make it easier to work.”
It was already dark, and the power had long since gone out in this mission world. There was no lighting inside the building.
Headlamps were exactly what they needed.
They provided light without occupying your hands—very convenient.
Lin Chu silently praised Yu Hongfei’s thoughtfulness. She thanked him aloud and reached out to accept the headlamp he handed her.
Although Zheng Ziyu had always been cold toward this man who suddenly joined them, seeing that he had thoughtfully considered this detail and brought them equipment, her expression softened a bit.
“Thanks.”
As she accepted the headlamp, she nodded at Yu Hongfei for the first time in a polite manner, but once she had the item in hand, she quickly retreated to Lin Chu’s side, maintaining her vigilance.
Yu Hongfei didn’t seem to mind. He just scratched his head with a grin, and when he saw Lin Chu and Zheng Ziyu already figuring out how to wear the headlamps, he quickly put on his own.
The delivery station was a long rectangular room.
From front to back, there were exactly three rows of shelves.
Each row was made up of several small shelves connected together, about five meters in total length per row.
The three of them split up, one row each, and began to sweep through the packages.
Some parcels had the name or item code listed on the shipping label.
If it was clearly a plush toy, ornament, or other useless space-taking item, Lin Chu and the others tossed it aside.
Food and daily necessities were placed on the right side of the shelf. Clothing and thermal supplies were stacked on the left.
Even though they each had a spring knife for opening boxes, it still took them almost two hours to go through hundreds of packages.
Lin Chu finally understood why so many people loved unboxing blind boxes.
The process of opening each one…
…was genuinely enjoyable.
You never knew what you’d find inside.
And if it turned out to be something useful, even someone as restrained as Lin Chu couldn’t help but feel a little excited.
What satisfied her most was discovering two boxes of self-heating rice meals, several boxes of milk, yogurt, soft drinks, and electrolyte water.
Since the zombie outbreak had been going on for nearly a year, and most of this kind of food had a shelf life of only six months, it was all well past expiration. Some of the milk boxes were even bulging. When it came time to divide things up, no one would likely fight her for them.
Only she could turn trash into treasure and make those expired goods valuable again.
They also found some clothing.
Because the delivery station served a tech park with a relatively casual work environment, people ordered all kinds of clothes—sportswear, dresses, sun protection shirts, and lightweight jackets.
Judging by the items, it must have been warm when the zombie outbreak happened. Only a few had taken advantage of off-season sales to buy winter coats and hoodies. Compared to the pile of light clothing, these were few and far between.
Still, Lin Chu was in need of clothes for all seasons.
Her biggest worry was being thrown into an extreme-cold world in the next mission. Without warm clothes or bedding, surviving would be tough.
Now that she had a few winter garments, she could at least get two pieces and wouldn’t freeze to death.
What everyone craved most, though, were daily essentials like tissues and sanitary pads.
There had been many female workers in the tech park, so the three of them managed to dig out four large boxes of feminine hygiene products.
After splitting them evenly, Lin Chu and Zheng Ziyu each had enough to last two years without issue.
The three of them gathered all the useful items they’d found, sorted them by category, and arranged them neatly for easier distribution later.
While Lin Chu was crouching down to sort the supplies, she looked up and noticed both Zheng Ziyu and Yu Hongfei looking sick, noses wrinkled, lips pressed tight, faces filled with discomfort.
“What’s wrong with you two?” she asked.
Zheng Ziyu pointed toward a pile of foam boxes stacked by the door.
Those were the boxes Yu Hongfei had opened.
Seeing that Lin Chu wasn’t affected in the slightest, Yu Hongfei couldn’t hold back anymore and asked, “Don’t you think it smells awful?”
“Ugh!”
As soon as he said it, the moment he opened his mouth, the stench assaulted him, and he turned to the side to dry heave.
It was only then that Lin Chu caught a faint whiff of the foul smell.
Looking at the foam boxes, she could pretty much guess what had happened.
Someone had probably ordered fresh food. But after being left for so long, it had completely rotted.
Sealed in those boxes for so long, the contents had probably fermented or even grown maggots.
That smell…
Well, just thinking about it was enough.
But Lin Chu was a forensic doctor. She’d seen worse—even swollen corpses weren’t uncommon in her line of work.
She was used to handling decaying bodies, so her nose had long since become desensitized to these kinds of odors.
Seeing the other two struggling to endure the stench, Lin Chu shook her head.
She knew they were afraid that if they left something this foul-smelling outside, it would attract a horde of zombies, so they’d rather keep it indoors and suffer through it.
But Lin Chu didn’t want to divide supplies in such a disgusting environment.
She strode over, and to the horror of the other two, picked up a striped plastic tarp and tossed it over the pile of foam boxes. Then, pressing her hand on top of it, both the tarp and the pile vanished from the delivery station.
In truth, Lin Chu’s storage space didn’t allow smells to transfer, but she still felt that leaving such rotten things exposed was visually offensive. Her psychological need for cleanliness compelled her to physically cover them before storing them away.
This scene played out in front of two stunned onlookers.
When she turned around, she saw Zheng Ziyu had already ignored the stench, stepped up closer to Lin Chu, and deliberately put distance between herself and Yu Hongfei. She then stared at him warily.
Yu Hongfei saw this and didn’t even dare to scratch his head. He waved his hands quickly.
“I mean no harm! I already knew about the space ability—I saw Lin Chu get it with my own eyes. I don’t have any ulterior motives. Really, I don’t.”
When Zheng Ziyu looked to Lin Chu and saw her nod, she finally relaxed a bit and quickly voiced her own stance.
“Don’t worry. I won’t tell a soul about this.”
Lin Chu nodded and didn’t press the issue further. She simply motioned for them to start dividing up the supplies.
Now that their interests were tied together, they were like grasshoppers on the same rope. Keeping the cooperation going peacefully was the best way for everyone to maximize their benefits.
As for future missions, chances were slim they’d meet again.
Whether they revealed her secret or not wouldn’t really affect her.
With a system on her side, anyone who could survive would have some kind of powerful item anyway.
Since it was impossible to stop people from peeking, she might as well use her tools to their fullest advantage.
