When Yu Hongfei heard what Lin Chu said, he froze for a moment, then his eyes firmed up like he was about to join the Party.
“I’ve never wronged the common people in my whole life!”
Seeing his reaction, Lin Chu now had a rough idea of what his profession had been before entering the mission world.
Before she could respond, Yu Hongfei quickly added, “You don’t have to untie my hands. I can’t use weapons like this, so I won’t be a threat to you. Just untie my feet so I can walk out of here.”
Clearly, he had heard the commotion Lin Chu had caused earlier.
If he couldn’t run, he’d end up as a midnight snack for the zombies.
Lin Chu accepted his proposal without hesitation.
She checked the rope binding Yu Hongfei’s hands and, seeing that only his hands were tied, raised her Tang sword and slashed through the rope around his feet. At the same time, she asked:
“The person locked in the next stall, do you know them?”
She was referring to the women’s restroom next door.
Now with freedom of movement, Yu Hongfei—who had obviously received professional training—quickly wriggled out of the ropes on his hands and feet.
He looked up and saw Lin Chu already retreating to the doorway, maintaining a distance of more than two body lengths from him. She hadn’t carelessly let down her guard. He didn’t approach but just shook his head in response.
“I don’t know them. But you should.”
She should?
Lin Chu thought for a moment and understood who he meant.
“The trio?”
“Yeah.”
Seeing Yu Hongfei moving his legs again, confirming he could walk, Lin Chu’s eyes flashed. She asked, “Were they tied up the same way as you?”
Yu Hongfei nodded with certainty.
“Of course. Those three are pretty unruly.”
At that, Lin Chu didn’t hesitate any longer. She strode next door and kicked the door open in one swift motion.
The three people inside were struggling to crawl toward the door. Lin Chu’s kick sent the door flying forward—slamming directly into the glasses-wearing man’s face.
His already shattered glasses flew off instantly.
The three collapsed into a heap.
Their expressions as they looked at Lin Chu were filled with shock, panic, confusion—a mix of emotions.
Lin Chu didn’t spare them another glance. She turned and bolted toward the back exit.
Yu Hongfei stepped out from the men’s restroom just in time to see Lin Chu sprinting away. He glanced at the three on the ground, pursed his lips, and said nothing before following her.
They had wasted some time. By the time Lin Chu reached the back door, she saw that two zombies had outpaced the rest of the horde by over a hundred meters and were already at the entrance.
She raised her Tang sword, but just as she did, the zombie in front, upon spotting a living human, reached out its hand.
In a flash, its arm was chopped clean off.
Wasteful!
Broken bones weren’t accepted by the system.
Lin Chu winced inwardly.
Still, she didn’t want to switch weapons in front of Yu Hongfei. So she gritted her teeth and swung her Tang sword, hacking the two zombies in front of her into mangled heaps.
Yu Hongfei looked at the zombies brutally dismantled before him, then back at Lin Chu. If his hands hadn’t still been tied, he probably would’ve scratched his head in disbelief.
No wonder the commander had warned him before departure not to underestimate women.
Were all women these days this terrifying?
Since the two zombies couldn’t be taken back, Lin Chu, right in front of Yu Hongfei, popped out their eyeballs and discreetly dropped them into her storage space using the cover of her pocket.
Then she swung the back door wide open.
By now, the zombie horde was less than 50 meters away.
Lin Chu turned and vanished into the darkness.
“You’re amazing, miss. Ma Yan and the others already cleared the surrounding zombies, but your ruckus attracted a whole new wave.”
Lin Chu shot him a glance and corrected, “Lin Chu.”
Yu Hongfei paused for two seconds before realizing that was her name.
He immediately grinned, flashing white teeth. “Lin Chu. Nice to meet you.”
His hands were still bound. Otherwise, he definitely would’ve offered a handshake.
Lin Chu gave a small nod in response, then turned to look at the building across the way.
When the zombies started swarming in, she had rushed out to avoid being surrounded. Yu Hongfei had claimed he knew a place where they could hide from the zombies while also observing Ma Yan’s shelter.
With his hands still bound and no apparent reason to lie, Lin Chu had followed him into a building diagonally across the street.
It turned out the place had indeed been thoroughly cleared. They went up to the second floor and found the right window to watch everything across the street.
It was already 11 p.m. The night was deep and dark. They could only make out the massive horde, drawn by the sound and scent of humans, swarming into Ma Yan’s shelter.
Screams rang out intermittently.
Lin Chu knew the three people left behind would be torn apart by the zombies.
It wouldn’t be a pretty death.
But she didn’t regret it.
If the zombies hadn’t come, she would have killed them herself.
After all, they had already plotted to kill her.
They just weren’t as capable as she was.
In an apocalyptic world, strength was everything—survival of the fittest.
Lin Chu wasn’t someone who looked for trouble, but if trouble came to her, she never held back.
In the stillness of night, the earlier screams from the trio echoed faintly.
She wondered if Ma Yan and the others, across the road in the pharmaceutical facility, could hear them.
“You shouldn’t feel guilty. Those three gave your information to Ma Yan and deliberately tried to harm you. You had no obligation to save them.”
Yu Hongfei spoke suddenly as he stared out the window, the screams still ringing in his ears.
But even he wasn’t sure whether he said it to comfort Lin Chu or convince himself.
As a soldier sworn to protect his country, watching someone die right in front of him felt wrong.
Since entering this mission world, his worldview had been constantly challenged and reshaped.
His superior had said, If you don’t find a way to adapt to this world, then you might as well prepare to die.
The mission wasn’t complete yet. He wasn’t ready to die.
“I don’t feel guilty.”
Lin Chu replied coldly, eyes still fixed outside the window.
People like her, who had seen the dark side of the world, couldn’t afford guilt.
“Either way… thanks for earlier.”
If it hadn’t been for Lin Chu, the one screaming now would’ve been him.
“How did they manage to catch you?”
Despite his hands being bound, Yu Hongfei moved effortlessly along the way. He didn’t seem the least bit hindered.
Lin Chu had also noticed that although his frame was lean, every muscle was solid.
The way he moved—it was the walk of someone from the military.
She had also observed the calluses on the back of his hands—exactly where long-term gun handling would leave them.
So how had someone like this fallen into Ma Yan’s hands—and ended up with a nickname like “Dumb Soldier”?
When Lin Chu asked her question, Yu Hongfei instinctively raised his hand to scratch his head, only to remember he was still tied up.
He sighed in resignation. “This morning, Ma Yan and his group were breaking into rooms and accidentally injured a few newcomers. I just happened to pass by…”
