The End of the World Scavenger: I Win by Turning Waste into Treasure Chapter 59: The Flooded World (14)

That boat, Lin Chu had seen it the previous night.

She remembered that the boat was used by two brothers who had secretly kept the food from the official airdrops hidden away.

She squinted her eyes, watching the boat slowly approach from behind the window.

The two brothers were not very tall, Lin Chu estimated them to be a little over 1.7 meters. They both had short, uneven buzz cuts, probably because there was no barber at the base right now, so they just shaved their heads themselves.

One of them was rowing, vigorously paddling toward the apartment buildings.

From the direction they were heading, it seemed like they were going to check on the food they had hidden.

It made sense. According to the survivors’ relocation plan, they would move into the apartment buildings today. So, the food they had hidden needed to be properly moved, or else it would be discovered.

The building they had hidden their food in happened to be diagonally behind Lin Chu’s building.

As they rowed forward, they would inevitably pass near her current position.

Lin Chu stood behind the window, opened it just a crack, and quietly listened.

“Brother, bro… row, row faster.”

“What’s with all the shaking? You always row like this.”

“Didn’t that woman named Bai say there’s a big black fish here, the kind that eats people? She went out with Little An that day, and when she came back, she was alone. Little An… Little An was eaten by the fish!”

Hearing this, the other man shuddered as well.

“Stop scaring yourself. Didn’t nothing happen after that day?”

“Ah, bro, that big black fish has been hungry for so many days, aren’t we delivering food to it? Maybe we should just go back.”

The two brothers were almost at the building where Lin Chu was.

Hearing this, the other man disagreed.

“No way, we can’t let those people see what we hid.”

“In two hours, everyone will have packed and moved out. We have to move our stuff before then.”

“Bro, why don’t you go talk to the mayor and ask if we can just live in this building? That way, we won’t have to hide anything.”

The older brother gritted his teeth and snorted: “That mayor’s a stubborn mule. He said everything has to be distributed as he planned. He won’t agree to change it. Do you think I wanted to come here?”

“Bro…”

“Shut up, save your energy. We need to move the stuff later.”

After being yelled at by his brother, the younger one finally shut up.

The two of them passed by Lin Chu’s building, the sound of water splashing loudly.

Lin Chu quietly moved from the south side of the window to the north side.

Now, the two brothers were once again within her sight.

They had parked their boat outside the building, and the younger brother, with his older brother’s help, climbed into the building.

Lin Chu waited silently.

Soon, she heard a startled exclamation.

“Bro! It’s over!”

“What do you mean, over? Speak properly!”

The older brother impatiently glared at the younger one from inside.

“It’s really over, all our stuff is gone!”

Hearing this, the older brother stopped everything, dropped the paddles, and pushed himself off the windowsill, flipping inside.

Very soon, Lin Chu could hear some panicked voices.

“Gone? How could it be gone?”

“Why is everything gone?”

“Did we remember it wrong? Wasn’t it in this building?”

It was unclear who suggested this, but both brothers immediately rushed to the window to check.

“No, it’s this building. It’s the one furthest from the small hill, it can’t be wrong!”

“It must have been taken!”

“But how could anyone have taken it? We hid it so well!”

The younger brother’s question made the older brother pause.

“Didn’t you say that woman Bai came by a few days ago? She was attacked by that big black fish. Maybe it was her who took it!”

The older brother’s words made the younger brother nod repeatedly.

“Bro, you’re right! It must have been her! She deserves to be attacked by the big black fish!”

After saying this, the younger brother carefully looked at his brother and scratched his head before asking, “Bro, what should we do next?”

The older brother glared at him, “Go back. What else can we do? Pretend nothing happened, then look for an opportunity to check on that woman Bai!”

The younger brother nodded quickly, then helped his brother back to the boat.

However, just as the older brother placed his right foot on the boat, it was flipped over, and both paddles fell into the water.

Luckily, the younger brother didn’t let go of his grip and managed to pull his brother back into the building.

“What is it?!”

The two brothers shouted in surprise.

They didn’t know what it was, but Lin Chu, who was watching from the opposite side, could see it clearly.

It was that big black fish.

It had arrived.

Lin Chu didn’t hide. She knew that since the water level had receded, as long as she stayed inside the building, the fish couldn’t harm her.

The two brothers soon realized what had flipped their boat.

“Fish! It’s that big black fish!”

“Bro, what should we do?”

The younger brother started panicking again.

The older brother’s face turned pale as he looked at the big black fish repeatedly surfacing from the water. After a long silence, he finally said:

“Don’t go out. Stay inside, we’ll be fine. When the security team arrives, we’ll be safe.”

“But… what if they find out we didn’t go back?” the younger brother asked, worried, and was promptly slapped on the head by his brother.

“Stop being so frantic. When we go back, just say we heard about the big black fish here and came to check it out, but we got stuck here because of the fish.”

“Okay…”

The younger brother rubbed his head, still asking, “But what if they ask why we didn’t report it to the security team and decided to take the risk ourselves? How do we explain that?”

The older brother seemed frustrated with his foolishness and replied through gritted teeth: “The security team is so busy. We’re just trying to help, understand?”

“Got it, got it!”

The younger brother seemed to be afraid of getting another slap and covered his head while speaking.

Seeing they were no longer making any moves, Lin Chu silently returned to her shelter, sat down, and thought.

The mayor they were talking about seemed like a stubborn mule.

But among people like them, opportunists, calling him a stubborn mule might actually mean that the mayor was someone who truly worked for the welfare of the people?

With this thought, Lin Chu had a rough idea of how she would approach settling down later.

In less than two hours, there was a stir outside.

Lin Chu stepped out of the shelter again and saw more than ten boats heading toward the residential area from the small hill.

Some of the boats had already reached halfway.

Among these boats, the first two were speedboats.

One of them carried a neatly dressed man heading toward the residential buildings.
