(Tonight, I revised and added some details to the previous two chapters, including Bai Wei’s reactions. If this chapter feels a bit disconnected, dear readers, you might want to go back and take a look.)
Bai Wei’s words left Lin Chu silent for a long time.
Ever since she learned from Ma Yan in the last world that Lin Hongfu had most likely entered the Infinite Apocalypse as well, she had been holding onto one hope—
To one day meet him in this lawless world where killing wasn’t a crime.
And then, end him.
But she knew the apocalypse worlds were randomly assigned. Running into someone you know was like finding a needle in a haystack.
So she had buried that desire deep inside her.
It only surfaced in the dead of night, when she dreamed of the past, and of her mother’s tragic end.
But now, Bai Wei was telling her—there was a way. A way to meet Lin Hongfu.
Only, to meet the conditions for it, she’d have to work harder than ever to accumulate points.
As Lin Chu mulled over this, Bai Wei suddenly said:
“In my pocket, there are a few syringes. The ones with clear liquid are sedatives, the green ones are healing agents.”
Lin Chu was snapped out of her thoughts and looked at her in surprise. “You’re giving me the syringes?”
She remembered them—Bai Wei had used one to control the fish-scale people earlier today, and had tried to sedate her just now with another.
Bai Wei nodded.
“I want you to live until then—to take care of Lin Hongfu.”
Seeing that Lin Chu didn’t move, Bai Wei shrugged knowingly.
“I know you’re probably worried this is a trick. You can always wait until I’m dead to take them.”
With that, she closed her eyes.
Now that someone could carry out her wish to kill Lin Hongfu, she could die without regret.
Watching her calmly await death, Lin Chu weighed the dagger in her hand.
In a place like the Infinite Apocalypse, what were the odds of meeting someone who hated Lin Hongfu just as much?
A strange, unnamable emotion stirred in her chest.
She wasn’t a maniac. Killing didn’t give her any pleasure.
After finding out that Bai Wei was Bai Zhengde’s daughter, her intent to kill had already begun to wane.
They had both been wronged by Lin Hongfu—why should they turn their blades on each other?
If Bai Wei killed her today, or vice versa, Lin Hongfu would laugh with delight either way.
“We’re still in Base No.1’s territory. I won’t kill you here.”
“But if you come at me again—you know what’ll happen.”
Lin Chu’s cold words landed in Bai Wei’s ears like a divine melody.
She opened her eyes and looked at Lin Chu with gratitude.
“And your grudge with Lin Hongfu is your own. You’d better hope you survive long enough to see him again. I’m only settling my own scores.”
Staring at Lin Chu’s hardened face, Bai Wei’s thousand thoughts condensed into just six words:
“I’m sorry. And… thank you.”
When Lin Chu untied her, Bai Wei was already sweating from the pain.
“Let me reset your hand.”
Looking at her limp, rubbery wrist, Lin Chu—for once—softened. She said this, then pressed with a practiced motion.
Crack.
Bai Wei’s right hand was reset.
“Hss—damn, that hurts,” she gasped, face twisted in pain.
Lin Chu remained impassive and shrugged. “You know I’m a forensic doctor.”
At her words, Bai Wei involuntarily shuddered but dared not protest. She could only watch as Lin Chu used the same brutal efficiency to set her left hand.
Once her hands were functioning again, Bai Wei reached into her pocket and pulled out a handful of syringes.
Just as she’d said—some held clear liquid, others green.
She laid them neatly on the ground and pushed them toward Lin Chu.
“Here.”
Lin Chu looked at the row: three syringes with clear liquid, four with green—seven in total.
“I brought eight syringes this time. Used one this afternoon—these are all I have left. They’re yours.”
“You used one this afternoon but not tonight?” Lin Chu frowned. Did that mean the one she injected her with wasn’t from these?
Bai Wei nodded, then shook her head.
“It’s hard to explain… These syringes are byproducts of my innate skill. But tonight, I used the skill directly on you.”
“My ability can sedate or heal.”
Innate skill?
This was Lin Chu’s first time encountering another player’s special ability.
In the zombie world, though she’d built decent alliances with Yu Hongfei and Zheng Ziyu, no one had ever spoken openly about their abilities.
Maybe this was Bai Wei’s way of repaying her for sparing her life, but she explained honestly:
“As long as I want to, I can inflict sedation or healing with any syringe.”
“These syringes are spillover effects produced when my skill cools down. Their potency is only half of the direct skill.”
“You saw it yourself. The healing’s decent. The sedation? Not so much. I thought I could knock you out for five minutes. It didn’t even last five seconds.”
Lin Chu glanced at the green syringes, then at Bai Wei’s still-swollen wrist.
Bai Wei understood. She picked up a green syringe and said, “I’ll use a healing one now. My hand’s killing me. I’ll restock it for you later.”
As the green liquid entered her bloodstream, the swelling on her wrist visibly faded.
Seeing Bai Wei test the drug herself, Lin Chu no longer doubted their authenticity.
They were definitely valuable items.
With these green syringes, it was like having a mobile healer on standby. In a fight, they could offer instant recovery.
“Thanks, then.”
Without further hesitation, Lin Chu collected the six remaining syringes.
Seeing her calm demeanor, Bai Wei wisely didn’t linger.
Just as she reached the door, her hand paused on the knob. She turned to look at Lin Chu, still sitting by the bed.
“Hey…” The word slipped out, but she immediately frowned in regret.
“Lin Chu.” She corrected herself, then hesitated before asking, “Have you been to the Extreme Cold World?”
Lin Chu looked up at her but didn’t answer right away.
Sensing her wariness, Bai Wei explained first:
“No hidden motives. In a previous world, I found a charcoal factory and stocked up on a lot of charcoal.”
“If you haven’t been yet, I can spare some for you.”
A peace offering.
Lin Chu could hear it clearly.
Charcoal… she hadn’t had the chance to gather any yet.
If she ended up in the Extreme Cold World, she’d definitely suffer without it.
She wasn’t going to refuse free supplies.
Seeing Lin Chu accept the gesture, Bai Wei finally cracked a small smile.
“I’ll bring you a few boxes once we’re back at the Hillside Base.”
But by the next night, they didn’t make it onto the helicopter returning to the Hillside Base as planned.
