Doctor Li thought they were anxious out of concern for Old Man Wan and his wife, so he reassured them, “Don’t worry too much. Old Man Wan’s wife just lost five fingers, and Old Man Wan only suffered a head injury and some eye problems. It’s nothing too serious.”
But this wasn’t something trivial.
For a rural woman to lose five fingers, she might as well be useless.
And for an elderly man to lose his sight, that was worse than being useless.
However, they couldn’t deny that it was their own fault.
Wan Chunmei and Old Tan both sighed inwardly. After a moment, they bid farewell to Doctor Li and returned home.
They tried to put last night’s scare behind them and resumed their daily chores.
Yesterday, Tan Yiliang had brought back some millet.
Wan Chunmei made a pot of millet porridge, simmering it on low heat, planning to cook it for an hour.
She also began cleaning the cotton they had bought, preparing to make a quilt for Tan Xiaomei.
Tan Xiaomei, holding little Qiyue, gazed at the fluffy white cotton and smiled so broadly her mouth couldn’t close. While smiling, she said, “Sister-in-law, Yiliang and Erqian are really something. At such a young age, they’ve earned such a large sum of money. You’ll have a good life from now on.”
Wan Chunmei smiled while picking the cotton, saying, “I never ask for them to earn much money, as long as they can live happy and healthy lives.”
Tan Xiaomei nodded with a smile, “That’s how all mothers think! I wonder when I’ll have one or two children of my own.”
Wan Chunmei brushed away the cotton fluff from her forehead and said, “No need to hurry. Maybe it’ll happen soon. Little sister, what do you think of Liu Shiye?”
Tan Xiaomei’s face immediately turned red. “Sister-in-law, why do you suddenly mention Liu Shiye?”
Wan Chunmei chuckled, “I think you two would make a good match. A few days ago, Aunt Yu mentioned that Madam Liu is looking for someone just like you as a daughter-in-law.”
Tan Xiaomei lowered her head, her face growing even redder. “Why did Madam Liu suddenly bring me up?”
Wan Chunmei lowered her head and continued sorting the cotton, laughing as she said, “Remember when Liu Shiye asked you to fix the embroidery on his mother’s clothes last time? Madam Liu saw it and was very impressed. She said you must be a clever and skilled girl.”
“Gugu…” little Qiyue, who was being held by Tan Xiaomei, happily hopped a few times.
Tan Xiaomei lifted little Qiyue to her feet, smiling as she said, “Sister-in-law, stop teasing me. I’m a woman who’s already been married. How could I be a match for Liu Shiye?”
Wan Chunmei couldn’t listen to this anymore. She set aside her work, looked at her seriously, and said, “Little sister, although you’ve been married, it’s not your fault. You are one of the best in both looks and character in Fengping Village. There’s nothing unworthy about you.”
Tan Xiaomei thought for a moment, then sighed deeply. “Sister-in-law, marriage is all about fate. What’s mine will come to me, but what isn’t, I can’t force. I’ll just wait and see.”
Wan Chunmei didn’t press the issue, not wanting Tan Xiaomei to overthink it. However, she could tell that Tan Xiaomei was indeed interested in Liu Shiye.
She wiped the sweat from her forehead and continued picking the cotton.
The Tan family’s life was still going smoothly as usual, but things were a mess over at the Wan family’s third household.
Wan’s third daughter’s husband had always had issues with Wan’s third daughter , especially because of their child situation, and had even considered divorcing her. Now, with her mother severely injured and her father losing his eyesight, he became even more disgusted with her.
“Look at this! What’s all this nonsense!”
Wan’s third daughter’s husband slammed his hands on the table in frustration.
Wan’s third daughter cried quietly beside him, not saying a word.
He pointed at her nose and shouted, “I’m telling you, get those two old people out of here! We can’t afford to take care of them!”
Wan’s third daughter cried, “But they are my parents! How can we just throw them out when they’re both injured?”
Her husband yelled at her, “If you don’t get them out, I’ll kick you out too! Get out! Get out!”
After saying that, he grabbed her clothes and threw them at her. “I’m divorcing you! Get out!”
Wan’s third daughter knelt down, holding onto his leg, and begged, “Husband, husband, I have a solution. I have a solution. I can still give you children.”
Her husband’s mood lightened a little at that. “What solution? Tell me.”
Wan’s third daughter cried, “My parents came here to help us, to help us have a child.”
Her husband’s expression shifted. “Help us have a child?”
Wan’s third daughter glanced behind her and said softly, “My mother said that my older sister can help us. She’s had six big, healthy boys. She’s sure to have a son for us.”
Her husband froze. “Are you out of your mind?! How can she give me a child?!”
Wan’s third daughter stood up slowly and whispered something in his ear.
His expression began to change as he listened.
