Wan’s third daughter thought she had found a solution and continued, “Husband, just do as I say, I promise it will work.”
“Is this your idea, or your mother’s?” her husband asked coldly.
Wan’s third daughter quickly smiled and claimed the idea as her own, saying, “It’s my idea! My mother could never come up with such a brilliant solution!”
Wan’s third daughter’s husband furrowed his brow and stared at her for a moment. After a long pause, he suddenly raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face.
Slap!
Wan’s third daughter was stunned, her ears ringing from the blow, and she lost her balance, falling to the ground.
After a long time, she recovered, holding her burning cheek, tears streaming down her face as she looked at her husband. “Husband, why did you hit me?!”
Her husband, rolling up his sleeves, paced back and forth angrily. “Wan Fengyue, Wan Fengyue! I always thought you were just a little spoiled and petty, but I still believed you were kind-hearted. I never imagined you were such a malicious woman!”
He took a deep breath, glaring at her with disgust. “You’re so cruel that you’d come up with such a vile plan. Are you even human? You disgust me!”
Wan’s third daughter crawled forward on her knees, crying out, “Husband, I’m doing this for you! I only want you to have a child!”
He slapped her across the face again, his voice harsh. “Don’t say it’s for me! It’s for you! Wan Fengyue, I tell you, there are a thousand ways to have a child, but this is not one of them. I’m not as despicable as you!”
He turned away, grabbed some paper and a pen from the table, and wrote out a divorce letter. He threw it at her face.
“Wan Fengyue! I know you’re heartbroken over losing your child, and I understand you’re sad you can’t have children anymore. That’s why I’ve been trying to be understanding, trying to accept you. Yes, my parents have been wanting me to divorce you, but I didn’t want to be a heartless man. I thought I’d wait a while, take you to the county for a checkup—maybe there would still be hope. And if not, we could adopt!”
“But you… you came up with this idea! I’m so disappointed in you!”
His voice trembled with emotion as he continued, “Go! Take your parents and get as far away as possible!”
Wan’s third daughter was stunned. She never imagined things would turn out like this. She just wanted a child.
“Husband, I know I was wrong. Please forgive me this time, I beg you!” she cried.
Her husband gave her a cold look and said, “A woman like you, I can’t take anymore. Leave! Leave while you still have some dignity. Don’t wait for me to have someone throw you out.”
“Husband!” Wan’s third daughter clutched her chest, crying desperately. “I really know I was wrong!”
Her husband ignored her and swung his sleeve, his tone cold. “I don’t want to see you again. Leave!”
With that, he slammed the door behind him and left.
Wan’s third daughter was frantic. She hurried to follow him. “Husband, husband!”
But it was as if he didn’t hear her. He walked straight out the door, leaving Wan’s third daughter alone in the yard, crying in anguish, with no room left for reconciliation.
She wailed and pounded her chest, almost ready to hang herself, but her fear kept her from doing so. She continued crying and screaming.
Wan’s stepmother watched helplessly from the house, her heart aching for her daughter. She wanted to go comfort her, but her legs wouldn’t move. She could only watch as her daughter lost control, feeling a deep pain in her heart.
In the village, good news stays inside the home, while bad news spreads fast.
The news of Wan’s third daughter being divorced spread to Wan Chunmei’s ears within half a day.
Wan Chunmei couldn’t quite decide if she should be happy or sad. She just felt that people shouldn’t be so lowly, or else they would sooner or later suffer the consequences.
She shook her head and went inside to pack the cotton she had just fluffed, preparing to make a quilt.
Tan Xiaomei, along with little Qiyue and Six Jin, had gone out. This was a rare moment of peace for Wan Chunmei as she prepared to move into their new house once it was completed.
At this moment, someone called out from the door, “Sister, sister.”
Wan Chunmei looked up and saw Aunt Yu coming in with a beaming smile.
Aunt Yu entered happily, saying, “Great news! Great news!”
Wan Chunmei paused her work, smiling as she asked, “What great news?”
Aunt Yu glanced around the room, lowering her voice and grinning, “My aunt asked me to help arrange a marriage!”
“Aunt? Which aunt?” Wan Chunmei asked, puzzled.
Aunt Yu’s eyes sparkled as she covered her mouth and whispered, “It’s Madam Liu, Liu Shiye’s mother! She asked me to matchmake for her son!”
