The third sister Wan’s voice was sharp and harsh, causing the villagers to turn their heads toward her.
“Third Miss, how can you say such a thing?! A second marriage is still a marriage, and it deserves the same courtesy—three mediators and six gifts!”
“Exactly! If you’re uncomfortable with it, just step aside.”
The villagers knew all about the third sister Wan being divorced, so they were very clear about her character. They had no good feelings toward this woman who had been cast out of her home.
“Right, Third Miss, if you can’t stand to see others doing well, then just leave and mind your own business.”
Wan Chunmei looked up over the crowd and saw the third sister Wan. There was a hint of anger on her face, but seeing that Liu Shiye and Madam Liu were present, she didn’t react harshly. She quickly calmed herself and smiled at the two of them. “Liu Shiye, Madam Liu, please come inside, please come inside.”
“Yes, sister-in-law,” Liu Zhoucheng responded quietly, carrying the things in his hands as he entered the house.
However, Madam Liu didn’t immediately follow him inside.
Wan Chunmei and Old Tan exchanged looks, feeling uneasy. They worried that Madam Liu might form a negative opinion of Tan Xiaomei due to the third sister Wan’s earlier remarks.
To their surprise, Madam Liu scanned the crowd with a cold, calculating gaze. Her eyes finally settled on the third sister Wan.
The third sister Wan froze under her intense gaze, taking a few steps back.
Madam Liu then stepped forward, slowly approaching the third sister Wan. Her eyes, sharp like those of a hawk, never left her target.
The third sister Wan, uncomfortable under her piercing gaze, scowled and said with displeasure, “What are you staring at me for?”
Madam Liu sneered, her lips curling in disdain. “I’m just here to see which mouth is spewing filth.”
The third sister Wan was taken aback, glaring at her with eyes like two dark pits, gritting her teeth. “Who are you calling names?”
Madam Liu gave her a contemptuous glance and said coldly, “I’m calling you, you wretch. Let me tell you, Tan Xiaomei is one of our Liu family’s people. If you dare bully her, you’ll be picking a fight with the whole Liu family!”
As she spoke, she purposely let out a mocking smile. “Oh, by the way, you’re just a divorced woman! What’s there to be proud of? You look down on others with second marriages, but I bet no one would even want you for a second marriage!”
The third sister Wan’s face turned green, and her eyes flared with anger.
Just at that moment, Wan’s second brother rushed forward and slapped the third sister Wan hard on the back of her head, making her dizzy and disoriented.
“You woman, you’re always looking for trouble! Get back inside, now!”
The third sister Wan refused to back down. “Second Brother, they’re the ones insulting me!”
Wan’s second brother raised his hand and slapped her hard on the back of the head again. “Stop talking back to me, just go!”
Reluctantly, the third sister Wan turned and left.
Wan’s second brother spat in disgust and turned to his parents, saying, “They’re here celebrating, and you’re just here to make a scene. What are you doing? Go, go, leave!”
Old Man Wan and Wan’s stepmother obediently turned around and, like ashamed street rats, scurried off in defeat.
Only then did Wan’s second brother relax. He turned and, crossing over the crowd, shouted, “Big Sister, congratulations on moving into your new house. I don’t have much to offer, but here, I’ll give you a jar of oil. Please take it!”
With that, he placed the jar of oil down and turned to leave.
Wan Chunmei froze for a moment inside the house. She couldn’t believe it. When had this second brother changed so much? In the past, he always wore a scowl and ignored the Tan family, but now he was suddenly so warm and friendly. It was hard for her to trust this sudden change.
The truth was, Wan’s second brother’s transformation was entirely due to Miao Shi.
