Aunt Liu glanced at her sister-in-law, who was nursing the baby, and sighed. “Big Brother, Big Sister-in-law, this is already your sixth child, why keep having more?”
“Isn’t it because we want a daughter?” Old Tan replied, walking over to the stove to start a fire and boil some water.
Both Old Tan and Tan’s wife were in their thirties. When they were younger, they had five sons. Their eldest, Tan Yiliang, was 15 years old, honest and simple. Their second son, Tan Erqian, was 12 years old and mentally slow. Their third son, Tan Sanyuan, was 8 years old and sickly. The two younger ones, Tan Siwen and Tan Wuguan, were only 6 and 5 years old, completely ignorant and always running around barefoot.
Tan’s wife had hoped to give birth to a daughter, but unexpectedly, it turned out to be another boy.
This made Old Tan so upset that he almost wished he could return the child.
At that moment, the baby in Aunt Liu’s arms began to cry.
Hearing the cry, Old Tan noticed the baby in her arms and hurriedly asked, “Sister, why did you bring another baby back?”
Aunt Liu glanced behind her and then recounted the events that happened at the Cao family’s house that night.
Old Tan was so furious that he stamped his foot. “That man is a beast! He doesn’t even want his own daughter!”
Tan’s wife, who was nursing her child, chimed in, “That’s right! What’s wrong with a girl? Our Tan family has been hoping for a daughter!”
With that, she set her own son aside and waved her hand, “Come, let me feed her!”
Aunt Liu was instantly overjoyed. “That’s really great! This child hasn’t had a single drop of milk since she was born.”
She then handed the baby to Tan’s wife.
Tan’s wife took the baby, admiring the little face with great affection. She quickly lifted her clothes to nurse the child.
As the baby drank, the crying stopped, and the little one appeared much more energetic. The previously wrinkled face smoothed out considerably.
Aunt Liu lowered her brows and smiled, saying, “She’s drinking, she’s drinking. This child is truly well-behaved.”
Tan’s wife gently touched the baby’s slightly purple cheeks and sighed. “This child is truly pitiful. She was born without even seeing her mother’s face, and now her own father has abandoned her.”
“Yes,” Old Tan agreed, feeling both sympathy and affection for the child. He slapped his thigh and said, “Sister, we’ll raise this child.”
Aunt Liu was taken aback, straightened her back, and asked seriously, “Big Brother, are you really going to raise this child? You’re already so poor that you can’t even afford rice to cook!”
Old Tan nodded, “It’s just one more pair of chopsticks; we won’t starve.”
“Exactly. One mouth or two, it’s the same to feed. My health is still good, I can handle it,” Tan’s wife added, tightening her hold on the baby.
Aunt Liu was deeply moved by her brother and sister-in-law’s kindness, feeling her nose tingle with emotion. She nodded and said, “Alright, Big Brother, Big Sister-in-law, I’m leaving her with you. Please make sure to take good care of her.”
“Don’t worry! We’ve always wanted a daughter, and we’ll treat her like a precious treasure!” Old Tan said seriously.
“That’s good!” Aunt Liu said as she pushed open the door. “The Cao family’s master will likely come looking for me soon, so I’ll leave now. Let today be as if I’ve never been here.”
“Don’t worry, sister,” Old Tan nodded in agreement.
“Big Brother, Big Sister-in-law, you’re good people. You’ll be blessed,” Aunt Liu said, looking back at the baby one last time before turning to leave.
Just as Aunt Liu had walked a short distance, Tan’s eldest son, Tan Yiliang, hurriedly pushed open the door and asked, “Father, did mother give birth yet?!”
Old Tan glanced back at the two children lying on the bed, smiled, and said, “Yes, yes, she gave birth to a pair of twins, a boy and a girl!”
“That’s great! We have a little sister!” Tan Yiliang grinned foolishly, eagerly peering at the babies.
