Tan Xiaomei became even more embarrassed after hearing Dr. Li’s words and lowered her head even further.
Dr. Li, seeing her like this, didn’t continue speaking and instead focused on taking her pulse.
After a brief period of silence, Dr. Li slowly withdrew his hand and asked, “How old are you, miss?”
Tan Xiaomei suddenly looked up. “Twenty-three!”
Dr. Li glanced at her and continued, “Only twenty-three, quite young, and your health seems fairly good.”
Tan Xiaomei was confused, blinking her eyes. She stood up and asked, “Doctor, what do you mean by that?”
Dr. Li sat down, took another sip of tea, and slowly explained, “Miss, after examining you just now, I can tell that although your body is a little weaker than most, it wouldn’t prevent you from becoming pregnant.”
Tan Xiaomei froze, taking a long time to recover. After a while, she stammered, “You mean… I can have children?”
Dr. Li put down his teacup and smiled. “Yes, you can, of course.”
Upon hearing this, Tan Xiaomei was overwhelmed with emotion. Her body started trembling uncontrollably, and she covered her face as tears streamed down. All the grievances from these many years suddenly rushed to her heart. “Doctor… Doctor… If I can have children, then why haven’t I gotten pregnant all these years?”
Dr. Li gave her a meaningful look and said, “If you have the time, you might want to have your husband come in for a check-up as well.”
Tan Xiaomei was taken aback. She couldn’t help but recall Aunt Yu’s words. Could it really be that the problem was with her husband?
She asked in doubt, “Doctor, is it really possible for men to have problems too?”
Dr. Li nodded lightly. “Yes, everyone is made of flesh and blood. If a woman can suffer from infertility, a man is no exception.”
Tan Xiaomei didn’t know whether to feel happy or worried. After thinking for a while, she decided that it was a good thing. At least she wasn’t the “eggless hen” they’d been talking about.
She quickly bowed deeply to Dr. Li and thanked him. “Doctor, thank you so much.”
Dr. Li turned and took a packet of medicine from the cabinet, handing it to her. “You’re physically weak, so make sure not to overthink. Boil this medicine and drink it for three days. After that, get some rest, and you’ll be better.”
Tan Xiaomei lowered her head, looking at the packet of medicine, but hesitated to take it, feeling embarrassed. “Doctor, I don’t need the medicine.”
Dr. Li understood that she was concerned about the cost of the medicine. He raised an eyebrow and asked, “Are you from the old Tan family?”
Tan Xiaomei nodded. “Yes.”
Without hesitation, Dr. Li pressed the medicine into her hands. “Take it. I won’t charge you for the medicine.”
Tan Xiaomei was surprised and stunned once again.
Dr. Li smiled. “Your family has been good to me for a long time. This packet of medicine isn’t worth much, just take it.”
Tan Xiaomei remembered her brother’s teachings from childhood, not to accept favors from others without paying back. She dug a copper coin from her pocket and placed it on the table. “Doctor, no matter what, I must pay for the medicine. I’m not sure if this copper coin is enough, but if it isn’t, I’ll bring more later.”
Dr. Li, knowing the nature of the Tan family well, wasn’t surprised by her insistence. He took the copper coin with a smile. “Alright, I’ll take it for now.”
Tan Xiaomei felt a sense of relief when she saw him accept the coin. She quickly bowed and, after a few words of thanks, hurried home.
Wan Chunmei was waiting by the door. She saw Tan Xiaomei returning from a distance and immediately pulled her aside, whispering, “Well? What did the doctor say?”
Tan Xiaomei’s eyes were red, and as she sobbed, she said, “Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, I can have children, I can have children.”
Wan Chunmei immediately felt a heavy weight lift from her chest. She brushed aside the loose strands of hair from Tan Xiaomei’s forehead and said, “Silly girl, this is good news! Don’t cry, don’t cry.”
