Chapter 107: Master Huiren Arrives!

“Gu Huaizhi!” Su Wan joyfully ran towards the carriage. Standing in front of the window, she looked as if she were dreaming, her hands clutching the window sill, her head leaning in. “Why are you here? No, why didn’t you say anything when you were coming?”

Gu Huaizhi gazed at her radiant smile, as bright as the morning sun. His eyes sparkled like they were filled with stars. His long fingers gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, a rare tender gesture.

“I’m out of medicine.” Gu Huaizhi looked at her for a moment, and a gentle smile formed at the corners of his mouth. “You forgot to leave the prescription, so I came to get it.”

Su Wan was taken aback for a moment, and raised her eyebrows. “Did you come here specifically to find me? Afraid I wouldn’t come back?”

Finding it inconvenient to talk this way, she leaped onto the carriage shaft and climbed into the carriage. Seeing him looking at her leisurely, Su Wan unceremoniously exposed him. “Before I left, I prepared a month’s worth of medicine for you. Also, I instructed Doctor Zhou that if I didn’t return in a month, he would send the follow-up medicine to you.”

Gu Huaizhi looked at her triumphant expression as if she had discovered something extraordinary. His thin lips curved up slightly, and he sighed with a hint of helplessness.

“Mother knows you’re returning to the marquis’ mansion and ordered me to come here.” Gu Huaizhi paused for a moment, glanced subtly in the direction of the Marquis of Dingyuan mansion, and said slowly, “She is worried that you might be bullied.”

“Who could bully me? Didn’t you hire two people to protect me?” Su Wan didn’t delve into the meaning behind his words, smiled and said, “I was planning to go out and buy some things to bring back to Xinghua Village tomorrow. You arrived just in time; if you had come a bit later, you would have missed me.”

Gu Huaizhi frowned slightly.

Su Wan lifted the carriage curtain and said to Xiao Tao and Mo Chen, who were standing outside, “You two sit in the carriage behind us. We’re going to…”

She turned to ask Gu Huaizhi, “Do you have a place to stay? Or are you staying at an inn?”

The smile on Gu Huaizhi’s lips slowly faded. Her clear, bright eyes showed she was inquiring, but she didn’t plan to take him to see her family, let alone let him stay at the marquis’ mansion.

Subconsciously, she didn’t regard him as one of her own.

Gu Huaizhi gave a faint “hmm” in response, turned his face away, and stopped looking at her, his attitude suddenly becoming cold.

Su Wan noticed that someone was throwing a little tantrum and she narrowed her eyes. She directly ordered Xiao Tao, “Go to the nearby inn.”

He had rushed to the capital overnight, hadn’t eaten well, and hadn’t slept well. Now, going to see her grandmother on an empty stomach would be uncomfortable.

“Huh? Oh, okay!” Xiao Tao was momentarily confused, and her mind full of questions. Judging by the name the lady called out, this person was clearly the son-in-law.

But the lady was taking him to stay at an inn?

Not at the marquis’ mansion?

She wanted to ask, but Su Wan had already lowered the curtain.

Xiao Tao turned to look at Mo Chen.

Mo Chen thought to himself that the master was indeed unexpected and the Crown Prince was truly the mistress’s true love.

They were at his wife’s family door, yet he couldn’t enter.

Su Wan sat opposite Gu Huaizhi.

Gu Huaizhi closed his eyes and leaned against the wall of the carriage, avoiding looking at this frustrating matter.

Su Wan didn’t explain either, pondering in her heart the purpose of Gu Huaizhi’s visit to the capital.

Mo Yuan and Mo Chen had complex identities, and they followed Gu Huaizhi’s orders, indicating that Gu Huaizhi was not simple either.

They were just forced to live together. If this man truly came for her, why didn’t they come to the capital together in the first place?

With these messy thoughts in mind, the carriage stopped.

“Young Lady, we’ve arrived at Yingke Inn,” Xiao Tao’s clear voice rang out.

Su Wan jumped out of the carriage first and brought a wooden ladder to help Gu Huaizhi down.

Gu Huaizhi glanced at the wooden ladder, then at Su Wan’s bright smile. After a moment of silence, he stepped down from the carriage with ease.

“Sir,” Xiao Tao called out cautiously.

Gu Huaizhi lifted his eyelids and glanced at her indifferently, responding with a casual “hmm.” His gaze shifted to Su Wan, and seeing that she didn’t show any signs of annoyance, his expression softened slightly.

“You’ve had a long journey and must be hungry. Let’s eat first,” Su Wan led Gu Huaizhi into the inn and requested a private room.

The two of them sat down in the private room, while Mo Chen and Xiao Tao sensibly stood guard at the door.

“I’ve retrieved my dowry, and the Emperor has deposed Su Mixue from her position as Crown Princess. My stepmother suffered some physical punishment for filing a complaint but didn’t manage to get me into trouble. Instead, she ended up with nothing, and now she must be wishing she could skin me alive,” Su Wan briefly described her current situation.

Previously, she hadn’t thought about introducing Gu Huaizhi to her family. After all, deep down, she believed that the two of them would eventually part ways, so there was no need to drag him into her mess.

But this man cared deeply, and Su Wan didn’t want to cause any unpleasantness over such a minor issue.

“Fill your stomach first, and then we’ll buy some gifts. You can come with me to see my grandmother.”

Gu Huaizhi held the teacup with his distinctly jointed hand and let out a noncommittal “hmm.”

Well, now he’s being pretentious.

Su Wan pouted slightly but didn’t mind making him a bit happier. “Grandmother said today that she wants me to bring you to see her.”

She rested her chin on her hands, and said with bright eyes. “I agreed.”

Gu Huaizhi’s expression softened, and he gave a light cough. “No need to buy more gifts; Mother has already prepared them.”

After waiting for a while, Su Wan didn’t move.

Gu Huaizhi looked up and met her eyes, which were filled with laughter. He was taken aback, and a touch of amusement appeared in his own eyes.

Having traveled day and night, Gu Huaizhi was exhausted and didn’t have much of an appetite. He ate a little reluctantly, then accompanied Su Wan to buy a few things before taking the carriage back to the Marquis of Dingyuan mansion.

Su Wan inquired, “How are Su Mixue and the Crown Prince doing?”

“The Crown Prince has taken someone in. When he heard from Military Doctor Liu that you are a divine doctor and learned that you had returned to the capital, he and Su Mixue came to the capital as well.”

Gu Huaizhi looked at the young girl sitting beside him. Her arm and slender leg were touching his arm and leg. She tilted her head slightly, listening to him quietly.

A rarely seen trace of tenderness surfaced in his eyes, and in a clear, gentle voice, he said, “The matter has been resolved. Let’s go home early.”

Su Wan obediently agreed, “Okay.”

The carriage stopped, and Su Wan got off the carriage together with Gu Huaizhi.

Mo Chen, looking cheerful, held the gifts in his arms.

Xiao Tao helped on the side.

The doorman, recognizing Gu Huaizhi, perceptively called out, “Sir.”

Gu Huaizhi nodded slightly, and he accompanied Su Wan to Fuxi Hall with a calm expression. 

The maid at the door saw Su Wan and Gu Huaizhi and was momentarily stunned, unsure of how to address them.

“This is the son-in-law,” Su Wan introduced.

The maids hurriedly saluted, “Eldest Young lady, Sir.”

Xiao Tao dashed into the house, and announced loudly, “Old Lady, the eldest Young lady has brought the son-in-law!”

The room fell silent.

As Su Wan and Gu Huaizhi stepped into the inner chamber, they immediately sensed the heavy atmosphere.

Old Lady Su had already sat up. Seeing Gu Huaizhi, she said with a kind gaze. “Huaizhi, did you arrive in the capital today? Come, sit down and let Grandmother take a look at you.”

She then instructed the old nanny, “Go to the kitchen and prepare some food to tide Huaizhi over.”

“Grandmother, Huaizhi has already eaten,” Su Wan said, and asked with a serious and calm face. “What’s happening in the household?”

Old Lady Su, seeing her granddaughter’s stern and uncompromising expression, sighed. “Master Huiren has come. He is currently treating your father.”
