Chapter 48
Gu Zhixing stood up, saying foolishly, “It’s nothing, just a minor scrape. I’ll put some iodine on it when I get back, and it’ll be fine.”
Gu Yongchang nodded slightly, replying, “It’s good to hear you’re fine. I’m really sorry about this,” and then took out some money from his pocket and handed it to the man.
“Take this money and go see a doctor,” he said.
Gu Zhixing glanced at his father before accepting the money, and casually slipped a note into the man’s hand.
Gu Yongchang furrowed his brows as he looked at the man opposite him, his eyes narrowing, and for a moment, his eyes widened in surprise.
Gu Zhixing quickly raised his voice, saying, “Be more careful when you drive in the future. Luckily, it was me you hit—if it were someone else, they’d definitely drag you to the hospital.”
By this time, Secretary Jiang and the driver had already gathered the clothes from the sack.
Secretary Jiang, looking embarrassed, said, “I’m really sorry, sir. We’ll be more careful in the future.”
Gu Zhixing snorted, lifted his sack, and limped away.
“Secretary, shall we get in the car?”
Gu Yongchang watched the man disappear in the distance and nodded, then unfolded the note in his hand. After glancing at it, he quickly tucked it back into his palm.
In the middle of the night, Gu Yongchang looked at his watch and sat up.
Guo Xinjun turned over in bed, “Lao Gu, it’s so late. Why are you getting up?”
“You sleep, I’ll go downstairs to get some water,” he replied.
“Alright, hurry back,” she said.
“Got it, go back to sleep.”
Gu Yongchang wrapped himself in a robe and left the room, turning towards the study.
He opened the study door, locked it, and turned on the light, only to find his son sitting in a chair.
He quickly walked over and asked, “What’s going on? Why are you back?”
Before coming here, Gu Zhixing had made up his mind. He thought about the past life and why their family ended up in such a situation.
It was because his father had underestimated his enemies, not taking the envious people seriously.
As a result, when something went wrong, his father panicked and allowed people to take advantage of the situation.
They even found letters in his father’s office that were correspondence with spies. The final straw was Secretary Jiang’s identification, which caused his father’s downfall.
Gu Zhixing understood that the leaders had always trusted his father’s character, and they later found evidence to help clear his name.
But who would’ve thought they would poison him in prison? So, whether their family had been exonerated, he didn’t know for sure.
That’s why he took the risk to come and talk to his father, to clarify these matters, especially to warn him about Secretary Jiang.
The two talked for three hours in the study. Gu Zhixing looked at his watch, noticing it was almost dawn.
“Zhixing, do you really believe this? Secretary Jiang and I have known each other for many years,” Gu Yongchang said.
Gu Zhixing frowned, “Dad, trust me. I have solid evidence, but I can’t tell you everything right now. You need to be careful.”
Gu Yongchang sighed and nodded. “Do you want to see Grandpa?”
Gu Zhixing shook his head. “Dad, you can tell Grandpa about our meeting today, but don’t tell anyone else, not even Mom. The fewer people who know, the better. My mission in Luoan is confidential, so pretend you don’t know anything.”
Gu Yongchang nodded. “I understand. Be careful.”
Gu Zhixing pressed his lips together, “Dad, take care.”
An hour earlier, Li Yuechan was tossing and turning in bed, unable to sleep, feeling restless.
She finally sat up with a start, her heart in a panic.
After pacing around the room a few times, she decided to go back and check on her mother—she couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in her chest.
After getting ready, she tiptoed out of her room, using the cover of the space to head toward the village outskirts.
Although it was only eight o’clock, it was pitch dark outside, with no light to be seen.
Li Yuechan thought for a moment, then took out night vision goggles from the space and put them on. She also pulled out her electric scooter, hopped on, twisted the throttle, and zoomed off into the night.
Half an hour later, Li Yuechan arrived at the entrance to Guihua Alley. She hesitated for a minute, then lifted her foot and walked inside.
She gently pushed the door, finding it already locked. Without hesitation, she scaled the wall and jumped into the yard.
The house was eerily quiet, but the light in the master bedroom was still on. Hearing a noise, Li Jianguo immediately came out.
Seeing it was Li Yuechan, his eyes widened in surprise. “You… what are you doing back here?”
Li Yuechan narrowed her eyes and asked, “Why can’t I come back? Where’s Mom?”
“Your mom… she’s taking a bath in the bathroom.”
Without saying another word, Li Yuechan walked to the bathroom door and knocked. “Mom, are you in there?”
“Xiao Chan, why are you back?” came her mother’s voice from inside.
Li Yuechan felt a wave of relief and replied, “It’s nothing, Mom, just take your time in the bath.”
A short while later, Su Lizhen came out of the bathroom and walked straight to her daughter’s room.
“Xiao Chan, why are you back?” she asked.
“Mom, are you okay?” Li Yuechan asked with concern.
“I’m fine. I just felt too hot, so I took a quick shower.”
Li Yuechan jumped into her mother’s arms, acting coquettishly. “Mom, I missed you, so I came back to check on you.”
“You’re all grown up now, and you’re still acting like this,” Su Lizhen said with a smile.
Li Yuechan didn’t know why, but she had been feeling uneasy all the way here, and only when she saw her mother did her heart settle.
“Mom, will you sleep with me tonight?”
“Ah, you want to sleep with me? You’re too old for that!”
Li Yuechan continued to act cute. “Please, Mom?”
“Okay, okay, I’ll sleep with you. Let me go tell your dad. Wait for me.”
“Okay, thanks, Mom.”
Not long after, Li Yuechan, like a little koala, tightly hugged her mother and nestled into her embrace. Her heart felt much lighter.
She secretly pressed a pressure point on her mother to help her fall into a deep sleep, and then the two of them vanished in a whoosh, instantly reappearing on the large bed in the villa in her space.
They snuggled together, soon drifting into a peaceful slumber.
Meanwhile, Li Jianguo, frustrated, slammed his fist against the bed, muttering, “Li Yuechan, you ruined my good plans. We’ll see about that!”
He glared at the glass of water he had prepared, his fist clenched in anger.
