Chapter 24: What Kind of Grudge?
Wen Yao wasn’t good at dealing with people. During her time living in the ancient castle villa, she hadn’t spoken to anyone besides Mei Yasha and Butler Zhou.
The others probably feared Ji Mingchen, so they only dared to take a few extra glances. No one would take the initiative to talk to her.
But these past few days, every time she went to the second-floor dining room for meals, Wen Yao could feel a girl staring at her. The gaze was sharp and scrutinizing, like disdain, in short… full of hostility.
Wen Yao didn’t think she had offended anyone since she arrived, but by piecing together conversations from the rest of the staff in the dining room, she could deduce that:
The girl’s name was Fei Kewei, and her father, Fei Qianjiang, was a renowned biology professor in the Dongzhou’s 14th District. He was also one of Ji Mingchen’s most important researchers.
Therefore, Professor Fei’s family were all VIPs in this giant ancient castle villa. Whether it was his beloved daughter or his incompetent son, they were all qualified to live here.
They were spared from the hardships of the apocalypse. Even though survival was difficult in this world, they still enjoyed the highest-end material life.
In this era of resource scarcity, such a life was beyond the reach of ordinary people. Not to mention survivors or refugees, even the commanders with illustrious achievements were not qualified to live like this. Yet, Professor Fei’s family could, their status was self-evident…
After reviewing the information in her mind, Wen Yao came to a conclusion: no matter what reason the other party had for being hostile towards her, she couldn’t afford to offend them.
So she found Butler Zhou, and asked him to send meals to her three times a day. She was too lazy to go downstairs anymore.
Fortunately, Zhou was very eager to agree, and even asked with concern if she was feeling unwell.
But the matter obviously didn’t end there. One day, the castle maid brought her food, and Wen Yao fell into deep thought as she looked at the dishes on the table.
The food was fine, but there was a drug in the rice.
This trick might fool an ordinary person, but it wouldn’t work on her.
As one of the most outstanding commander trainees in the North Continent’s 13th District base, her five senses had undergone extremely rigorous training. She didn’t even need to smell it; she could feel the extremely fine texture with her fingertips.
Pointing out the problem with the food would obviously expose her as someone extraordinary. Ji Mingchen was currently not in Gangqiao City, nor in the base’s headquarters. For safety’s sake, she couldn’t reveal her identity.
After much thought, Wen Yao only ate a few bites of the food and used the excuse that she wasn’t hungry.
But in the evening, a plate of pasta was sent up, and this pasta was clearly also wrong.
Wen Yao: “…”
What’s wrong with them? What kind of grudge do they have?
…
Meanwhile, in a room on the fourth floor.
Fei Kewei looked up: “You said what? She didn’t eat that rice at noon?”
The maid nodded timidly.
Fei Kewei pondered: “Did she notice something?”
The maid shook her head: “The powder is colorless and odorless, it’s impossible for anyone to detect it.”
Fei Kewei: “Then wait, I don’t believe she won’t eat dinner either…”
Then, she turned to another female commander: “Captain Lu, if I succeed here, are you sure you can get her out safely?”
Lu Li nodded: “A wave of zombies suddenly erupted in the western suburbs of Gangqiao City, including hundreds of mutated zombie variants. They’re very difficult to deal with. Everyone has been out fighting these past few days, only me and Luo Xuanxing are left guarding.”
“Luo Xuanxing is leading people to guard the southeast gate of the villa, I’m guarding the northwest gate. We’ll leave from the northwest gate, that’s where my people are.”
Then, she asked: “But Miss Wei, that girl was brought back by Captain Ming. Captain Ming is not in the base right now, are you sure you want to do this?”
Fei Kewei nodded: “As long as you don’t say anything…”
Lu Li quickly replied: “Captain Ming is what kind of person, he’ll find out even if I don’t say anything.”
Fei Kewei thought for a moment, her head slightly raised, she said very confidently: “Captain Ming will never blame me.”
Lu Li had lived in the ancient castle villa for many years, she knew this. When Miss Wei first came to the villa with Professor Fei, she was still a little girl, with a spoiled temper and no sense of responsibility. It was the rebellious period of her adolescence.
She had broken a painting that Captain Ming liked, stolen important documents from his office, and even asked him for gifts without restraint on holidays or birthdays.
The most outrageous time, she even released a prisoner, claiming that the person was her elementary school classmate, which indirectly led to the deaths of two researchers…
But even for such a crime that deserved execution, Professor Fei took her to apologize and everything was fine. Not only did she not receive any punishment, but these incidents themselves became capital for her to flaunt.
Of course, this was also the reason why she dared to act recklessly in the ancient castle villa. After all, Captain Ming’s leniency and indulgence were only for her.
Another maid stood beside them, she looked at the three calm people and cautiously reminded: “But Zhou… Butler Zhou, asked someone to take good care of her. This was personally instructed by Captain Ming before he left. Maybe we shouldn’t mess with this girl…”
Lu Li, however, didn’t think much of it: “Nowadays, there are many women who are like useless vines, they are played with by men and then discarded.”
“That girl is beautiful, but Captain Ming brought her back and casually slept with her, then ignored her for so many days. How important can she be?”
No matter how important she was, she definitely wouldn’t be as important as Miss Wei, and definitely not as important as Professor Fei.
After all, compared to real survival resources, what could a beautiful girl be? For men, she was just a dessert after a meal.
Lu Li didn’t agree with Fei Kewei’s bad idea, but she was too lazy to object. It was purely a matter of watching the fun and flattering the little ancestor. She didn’t care at all.
After all, the outcome was predictable. It would be nothing more than Miss Wei smiling and making a fuss, at worst, Professor Fei would take her to apologize.
No big deal.
Fei Kewei listened to Lu Li’s words, and thinking about how that girl had defiled the god in her heart, she was furious. She was even more determined to get rid of her: “You two go up and see if she’s fainted.”
…
At this moment, in the small hall on the fifth floor, Wen Yao was sitting at the dining table, her hand propping up her chin, seriously considering a question.
Should she pretend to faint, or not?
She had already managed to dispose of the pasta in the bathroom, pretending to have eaten it.
If she didn’t faint now, she would soon be exposed, which would arouse their suspicion and she wouldn’t be able to avoid a confrontation with them.
She was alone, with no family or friends in the Dongzhou, how could she fight them? On the basis of her shallow relationship with Ji Mingchen?
Wen Yao didn’t think she had that kind of weight.
She had been in the 13th District base for seven years, and she knew that all the continents and districts valued researchers highly. Special professors, their status was almost equal to the base commanders.
If she had a head-on conflict with this Miss Wei, the other party was powerful and influential, what if they directly tore up the face and had her arrested?
So it was better to hide her strength for now…
