Chapter 19: You Deserve It
Xing Han was busy all day with the arrangements for Zhan Jiang’s funeral. He had to apply for permits, transport Zhan Jiang’s body to the military dog cemetery, and organize the burial ceremony. It wasn’t until the afternoon that he finally returned to the military district.
For the first time, he felt that mental exhaustion was even more tiring than physical exhaustion. The first thing he did upon returning to the dormitory was to collapse onto his bed. It was as if he entered a dream, yet he felt awake, finding himself on the training field.
His soldiers were already lined up neatly, waiting for his arrival.
Xing Han walked to the front of the line and stopped, ready to speak when he heard someone call out, “Ah Han.”
He turned his head to see Ling Yiran excitedly running towards him. Xing Han frowned slightly, “Why are you here?”
“I’m here to see you, aren’t you happy?” Ling Yiran approached him, reaching up to hook his arm around Xing Han’s neck.
Something was off. This person wasn’t Ling Yiran. No matter how similar they looked, Xing Han could tell this wasn’t Ling Yiran. So, as soon as the other person hugged his neck, he quickly grabbed the outstretched hand, twisted it forcefully, and kicked the person’s knee hard. “Speak, who are you? Why are you impersonating Ling Yiran?”
The “Ling Yiran” cried out in pain, falling to the ground. While groaning, they struggled to turn over and looked at Xing Han, saying, “I am Ling Yiran.”
Xing Han asserted, “You’re not.”
“I am.”
Xing Han stepped on their throat, his face stern. “If you don’t speak, don’t blame me for being rude.”
“I really am Ling Yiran.”
Xing Han’s expression turned cold, and he lifted his foot, ready to deliver a fatal blow.
The person screamed and disappeared right before Xing Han’s eyes.
Xing Han was momentarily stunned, then woke up.
He looked around at the simple dormitory, rubbed his forehead, and couldn’t believe he had dreamed of Ling Yiran, and it was a fake Ling Yiran at that.
“Why would I dream of him?” Xing Han exhaled deeply and got up to wash his face in the bathroom.
Meanwhile, in the backyard of the Ling family’s ancestral hall on Immortal Guest Mountain, there was a scream like a pig being slaughtered.
“Ahhh—”
Ling Zhen jumped up from Ling Yiran’s bed, “It hurts, it hurts, it hurts so much.”
Ling Yiran frowned, “What were you doing in Xing Han’s dream?”
Originally, it was supposed to be him entering Xing Han’s dream, but Ling Zhen insisted on going in once, and even asked him to wait ten minutes before entering. But not even ten minutes had passed before Ling Zhen woke up.
Ling Zhen grimaced, rubbing his knee and throat, “Why is it that getting beaten in a dream makes you hurt in reality too? It hurts so much.”
“That’s someone else’s dream, not yours. And you used your soul sense to enter someone else’s dream. If your soul sense gets hurt in the dream, when it returns to your body, you’ll get hurt in reality too. As someone from a family of cultivators, you should know this.”
Ling Zhen rubbed his knee, “I heard about it, but I hadn’t experienced it.”
“Have you experienced it now?”
“I have, and it really hurts. I almost died at Xing Han’s hands.” Ling Zhen smiled at Ling Yiran, “But it was worth it.”
Ling Yiran was curious, “What exactly did you do in his dream?”
“I disguised myself as you to get close to him, to see if he’d mistake me for you. But he recognized me right away. Not only did he knock me to the ground, but he also kicked me hard a few times. Major Xing really is a soldier, even in dreams he’s so vigilant. I give up.”
Ling Yiran laughed, “You deserved it.”
Seeing Ling Yiran so amused, Ling Zhen teased, “Little Ancestor, are you secretly overjoyed?”
Ling Yiran was speechless, “Why would I be overjoyed?”
“Because Major Xing didn’t mistake me for you.” Ling Zhen pointed to Ling Yiran’s chest, “Feel your little heart, aren’t you happy about this?”
“…” Ling Yiran thought he might actually be quite happy.
“Major Xing is a good person, very upright. His face tells me he’s the kind of man who, once he sets his heart on someone, won’t look at anyone else. Little Ancestor, don’t miss out on such a good man.” Ling Zhen patted his shoulder, “You can now enter his dream and start dating him.”
Ling Yiran rolled his eyes, “He’s already awake, I’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”
He had a task tonight and no time to enter Xing Han’s dream. He’d have to wait until tomorrow’s nap time, assuming Xing Han took a nap.
Ling Zhen sighed, “Looks like we’ll have to wait a while for your wedding banquet.”
“Hehe.” Ling Yiran gave a fake laugh, “Even if I invite you to the wedding, would you dare to come? Would you dare to eat food prepared by ghost officers?”
Ling Zhen was stumped, curious, “Little Ancestor, what is a ghost officer’s wedding banquet like?”
“You’ll find out when I invite you to my wedding, if that day ever comes. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until you die to attend my wedding banquet.”
Ling Zhen: “…”
Since Ling Yiran still had to study, he didn’t stay long at the Ling family. He returned to the Underworld in the afternoon and came back to the Ling family the next day at noon to enter Xing Han’s dream again.
This time, he went in himself.
