Who’s That Wild Man?
If it were an ordinary person, they definitely couldn’t just vanish into thin air.
But Ling Yiran wasn’t an ordinary person; he was a ghost officer in the Underworld.
Due to his relatively low rank, he was only responsible for soul-snatching tasks at night. Although his cultivation level made him unafraid of the sun and daylight, being exposed to the sun for too long, like today, could still make him faint.
If he were to be exposed every day, his soul might even dissipate.
However, once he passed the rank assessment, his position would be promoted, and his cultivation would improve, preventing today’s incident from happening again.
That’s why he didn’t let Doctor Fu examine him. If they found out that a “living” person without breath or pulse could move freely, it would definitely scare them to death.
“Yiran…”
A young man dressed in a black long robe, with two circles of golden trim embroidered on the cuffs, collar, and hem, flew to Ling Yiran’s side.
He was Shi Yi, Ling Yiran’s friend and also a second-class ghost officer. The robe he wore was the uniform of a ghost officer.
Ghost officers are divided into five levels: Black and White Impermanence, and levels one, two, three, and four.
Level four is the lowest, with a completely black uniform and no golden trim. Level three has one circle of golden trim, level two has two circles, and level one has three circles.
The highest level, Impermanence, not only has three circles of golden trim but also other golden embroidery, each unique to the individual’s preference.
Shi Yi placed his hand on Ling Yiran’s shoulder and laughed heartily, “Yiran, I heard you got married. Is it true?”
Ling Yiran’s mouth twitched, “How did you find out?”
“Old Yang, who handles the daily records for ghost officers, told me. He received the notice on your wedding day. He thought you would tell me about it, so he brought it up. Who knew I didn’t know anything about your marriage? Wow, you little rascal, do you even consider me a friend? You didn’t even mention your marriage. Are you worried about me giving you a wedding gift?”
Ling Yiran rolled his eyes. “If I could trick you into giving a gift, do you think I’d miss the chance?”
Shi Yi laughed in exasperation. “Let’s put aside the fact that you hid your marriage from me. First, tell me, who’s the wild man you married?”
Ling Yiran rubbed his forehead. “How do you know it’s a man?”
“Of course, Old Yang told me.”
“Since Old Yang told you, did he also mention that the person I married is from the Human World?”
“Someone from the Human World? You actually married someone from the Human World? Is this something the family of a new soul did for them? What’s the point of a ghost officer marrying someone from the Human World? You’re separated by life and death. How do you live together? Unless you become an Impermanence and aren’t bound by restrictions, allowing you to stay in the Human World every day. And you’re both men, how do you even…?”
Shi Yi paused, realizing something was off.
“Wait a minute, you’re almost always with me on tasks. When did you meet someone from the Human World? And there’s a rule in the Underworld that humans and ghosts can’t fall in love. As a ghost officer, how could you knowingly break the rule? How did you even get the Underworld to acknowledge this marriage?”
“You finally asked the right question.” Ling Yiran got a bit angry at this point. “Let me tell you, I don’t even know who the other person is. I was told I got married out of nowhere. You have no idea how stunned I was when I was informed about the marriage. So it’s not that I’m not a good friend; I was just as clueless.”
“You were clueless?” Shi Yi was puzzled. “Then what’s going on now?”
Ling Yiran explained, “I asked the Impermanence lords, and they said someone used my birthdate to arrange a ghost marriage.”
Today, he went to find Xing Han to resolve the ghost marriage issue.
But since Xing Han lived in the military district, where the yang energy was strong, and there were rules in the Underworld against entering the Human World military district without a task or permission, he couldn’t just use magic in front of mortals.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have worn a panda costume to avoid the sun while looking for Xing Han.
“Using your birthdate for a ghost marriage still requires your consent or your family’s, right?”
Ling Yiran sighed, “The person who arranged the marriage is my descendant, a powerful celestial master. The Impermanence lords don’t know the details, and I can’t just go to the Judge or Yama King for such a trivial matter. They’re too busy to see a lowly ghost officer like me.”
“True.”
“So I can only investigate this matter when I have time.” Ling Yiran gritted his teeth, “Once I find out which brat did this, the first thing I’ll do is enter their dream and give them a good beating.”
Shi Yi laughed heartily, “I support you. If you need my help, just say the word.”
Ling Yiran nodded, “Alright, enough talk. I’m going back to rest. Let’s go on the task together tonight.”
He had been in the sun for a while today, and his body was a bit tired. After returning to the dormitory, he fell asleep.
At ten o’clock in the evening, Ling Yiran and Shi Yi left the Underworld together.
Their first task tonight was to snatch the soul of an elderly person whose lifespan was about to end.
At this moment, the elderly person lay dying on a hospital bed, with his children and grandchildren bidding their final farewell.
Even though Ling Yiran had snatched countless souls, he still couldn’t get used to the scene of life and death partings.
Seeing the mortals cry inevitably made him feel sad too.
He patted Shi Yi’s shoulder and said, “The old man has five minutes left. You stay here while I make a phone call.”
Shi Yi asked, “Who are you calling?”
Ling Yiran replied with a dark expression, “My man.”
He hadn’t had a chance to explain things clearly to Xing Han today, and he left the military district in a hurry. He wasn’t sure if he could see Xing Han tomorrow, so it was better to arrange a time with this busy man first.
Shi Yi burst into laughter, fortunately, the people in the ward couldn’t hear or see him, otherwise, they would have been scared to death.
