Chapter 5: Changing the Rules
By five-thirty in the morning, Ling Yiran and Shi Yi dragged the captured ghosts back to the Underworld.
After handing in the task, Ling Yiran went to find Shen Qiu, who was in charge of managing second-class ghost officers. He said awkwardly, “Boss, I need to go to the Human World today. I hope you can approve it.”
Except for ghost officers of the Impermanence level and above, other ghost officers had to apply to their boss to leave the Underworld.
Shen Qiu was a female Impermanence, with a stunning face, wearing a black embroidered dress adorned with large and small golden peonies, exuding the wealth of a young lady from old times.
There are two types of Impermanence: Black Impermanence, wearing black official robes, and White Impermanence, wearing white robes, but their responsibilities differ.
Shen Qiu took a puff of incense-made smoke and lazily said, “I just received a notice that the higher-ups have revised the rules for entering and exiting the Underworld.
Starting today, any ghost officer with a partner in the Human World can freely enter and exit the Underworld to visit their partner without needing approval, but they must not reveal their identity.”
It seemed like a humane rule, but in reality, it was just for show.
Ghosts who become ghost officers usually had been dead for decades and could not reincarnate, so even if they were married in the Human World, their partners were likely deceased or reincarnated.
Moreover, the Underworld had a rule that humans and ghosts could not fall in love. So where would a ghost officer find a partner in the Human World?
Ling Yiran’s situation was somewhat special, making her feel like this rule was changed just for him.
Shen Qiu looked at Ling Yiran meaningfully and took a drag of her cigarette.
Ling Yiran exclaimed joyfully, “Really?”
The sudden new rule made him not want to divorce anymore. It seemed marrying a human wasn’t such a bad thing; it would make entering and exiting the Human World much easier.
Shen Qiu tossed him a token for entering and exiting the Underworld.
“From now on, you can come and go as you please, but you must complete your tasks well and not slack off on the promotion exam. If you don’t pass to become a first-class ghost officer, I’ll take back your token.”
“Yes, Boss.” Ling Yiran happily touched the token. With it, leaving the Underworld would be much more convenient.
“I’ll repeat what I said yesterday: after leaving the Underworld, don’t use magic to disrupt the Human World.”
“Got it.”
“Go on.”
Ling Yiran left the office, changed out of his ghost officer uniform, and left the Underworld. He found a place with no people near the military district to surface.
But when he reached the military district gate, he regretted it.
He and Xing Han were only in a yin marriage. From his perspective, Xing Han was his partner—recognized and registered by the Underworld—but for Xing Han, it wasn’t a legal marriage, and he could marry someone else anytime.
If he brought up divorce, Xing Han would definitely think he was crazy.
So, finding Xing Han now was pointless; he needed to find the junior who arranged the yin marriage.
Just as Ling Yiran was about to leave, he suddenly heard a car horn behind him.
He turned to see a black SUV approaching and stopping beside him.
