Chapter 40: The Appearance of a Key Figure, 003 in Danger
Qi Bei’s voice was filled with anger. He hadn’t been home for just one day, and now, had Jin Yue run away again?
“Mr. Qi, Miss Jin fainted this morning. We’re at A City First Hospital right now,” the bodyguard on the other end of the phone replied calmly.
She fainted again! How could she have fainted again?
Qi Bei didn’t think too much; the pain in his heart made him rush out the door.
Under the night sky, he slammed the accelerator to the floor, the air in the car icy and sharp. The car sped like an arrow, and his expression was dark, unreadable.
Meanwhile, after the bodyguard ended the call, he returned to stand outside the hospital room, still expressionless.
Not long after, a tall and elegant figure swiftly approached. His exquisite features were as cold as frost, and his entire presence exuded nobility and pride.
However, his face carried a subtle yet noticeable hint of urgency and concern.
“Where is she?” Qi Bei asked as he neared the bodyguard.
“In the hospital room. Miss Jin’s friend is inside with her,” the bodyguard gestured toward the room.
Qi Bei walked toward the room, but when he reached the door, he stopped abruptly, turning to look for the doctor.
After a long while, Qi Bei finally entered Jin Yue’s hospital room.
As soon as Qian Shasha saw Qi Bei, she glared at him angrily, pointed toward the door, and gestured for him to step outside to talk.
Qi Bei stared at Jin Yue, whose pale face lay on the bed. His expression was dark, his emotions complex, filled with a mixture of pain, worry, sorrow, and unwillingness.
He stood there for a long time, just looking at her, before finally turning and stepping outside.
“Why did she faint at your house? Did you do something to her?” Qian Shasha tried to control her emotions, asking Qi Bei coldly.
Since the incident at the bar, she had become more level-headed and no longer impulsive like before.
Leaning against the wall in the hallway, Qi Bei’s deep, dark eyes glowed faintly. He pursed his lips and replied, “This isn’t the first time she’s fainted. The doctor couldn’t find any issues this time either. I’ve already contacted someone, and they’ll recheck her tomorrow.”
Qian Shasha angrily responded, “So she fainted before? Why didn’t you have her checked out properly then?!”
“Also, it’s been a whole day, and you’re only coming to see her now. She moved in with you, and this is how you treat her?”
The more she spoke, the more agitated she became. Seeing Qi Bei still standing there, staring with a complex look at the hospital room, and completely ignoring her, she couldn’t help but feel even more angry.
Trying to control her emotions, she said with restraint, “Qi Bei, if you don’t care for Yueyue like this, then just let her go. She deserves better.”
At her words, Qi Bei’s icy gaze pierced through her like a sharp sword. His words, cold as ice, escaped his thin lips: “Let her go? It’s impossible in this lifetime!”
Everyone told him to let her go, even she was letting him go.
Qi Bei gave a self-deprecating smile, turned, and entered the hospital room. Before closing the door, he gestured to the bodyguard outside.
Qi Bei, being the boss in such a high position, usually appeared calm, but when he was enraged, the coldness he exuded was something that ordinary people couldn’t withstand.
Qian Shasha snapped back to reality, ready to enter the room, but was stopped by the bodyguard.
“What are you doing!”
Qian Shasha glared at the bodyguards, but they remained unmoved, blocking her path with their usual stone-faced expressions.
Frustrated, Qian Shasha could only storm off and head home, planning to come back the next day to check on Jin Yue.
The next morning, Qi Bei completed the discharge paperwork for Jin Yue and then took her to Mo Family Private Hospital.
Before long, he had her transferred to the top-floor examination room.
A sophisticated machine meticulously scanned Jin Yue’s head. After a long while, the machine remained unresponsive.
The man in the examination room, noticing this, furrowed his brow and instructed his assistant to perform a full-body scan of Jin Yue. Once the results came in, there was still no indication of any abnormalities.
The man turned to leave.
“Blood tests and a full-body scan have been done. According to the reports, her body seems to be perfectly fine,” the man said to Qi Bei, who had been waiting by the wall.
“But she’s fainted twice for no reason, and the last time she fainted, she was in clear pain. Yun Ji, are you sure about this?” Qi Bei asked, his voice carrying a trace of concern.
Mo Yun Ji, the director of the hospital and a descendant of a medical family, was the person Qi Bei had contacted the night before. He had completed post-doctoral work at Harvard University’s medical school and was renowned for his expertise.
Mo Yun Ji’s expression remained unchanged. He glanced at Qi Bei and replied, “According to the reports, yes. But I didn’t say she has no issues.”
Qi Bei, clearly not satisfied, pressed, “What does that mean?”
Mo Yun Ji motioned for Qi Bei to follow him into his office. After a moment, he retrieved a file from a locked drawer and asked, “How long have you known her? Do you know her well?”
Qi Bei was puzzled. “Yun Ji, what does this have to do with her condition?”
Mo Yun Ji’s gaze was steady as he continued, “I want to know—has she ever seemed like a completely different person? Does she often behave strangely?”
Qi Bei’s eyes flickered at this question. What did Mo Yun Ji mean by that?
But this query triggered something in Qi Bei. He suddenly thought about Jin Yue’s recent changes. He hadn’t considered it before, but Mo Yun Ji’s question made him take a closer look.
The Jin Yue from before had always worn heavy makeup and dressed in a more mature style.
But now, the Jin Yue he saw loved light makeup, sometimes even going barefaced. Her outfits were youthful and lively—completely different from her previous style.
Moreover, the reports indicated that Jin Yue had once been a rebellious and willful girl, with a personality at odds with the one she exhibited now.
Even more striking was that, according to the reports, Jin Yue had been organizing a party at a bar just the night before their first meeting. Could someone really change so dramatically in just one day?
“I looked into her after meeting her. She really is different from the person in the reports, not just in appearance, but also in personality,” Qi Bei said, turning the file over in his hands.
Mo Yun Ji handed Qi Bei another set of documents, and Qi Bei quickly flipped through them. His expression grew more complicated with every page.
After a long silence, he spoke in an uncertain tone, “Are you saying that she’s not the same person as she was before?”
Mo Yun Ji nodded. “If I’m not mistaken, her soul has already changed. The reason she keeps fainting might be because she’s carrying some sort of device inside her. We would call it a ‘system.’”
“A system?”
“Yes. It’s a complex device with many forms. I can’t explain it fully right now, but if I’m right, she might have been assigned a task by this system. If the task fails or she disobeys the instructions, the system will punish her. This is also why we couldn’t detect anything with our standard equipment. Because this system is not of this world, it doesn’t show up in tests designed for Earth-based ailments.”
