The Laid-Back Life of a Lucky Wife in the 1950s Chapter 40: Meat Buns

“Wait here for me. I’ll be back soon.”

After handing the train ticket to Qin Tianru, Qi Han gave her a quick reminder before swiftly leaving the waiting hall.

The waiting hall was crowded with people awaiting their trains. With so many eyes around, Qin Tianru couldn’t ask too many questions and could only obediently sit in her seat.

Ever since she entered the county town, she hadn’t stopped being the center of attention. She couldn’t help but feel puzzled. Sure, her outfit was a bit unconventional, but it wasn’t exactly outrageous, was it?

Why were people staring at her as if she were some kind of circus act? She wasn’t a performance artist.

Over twenty minutes later, Qi Han returned carrying two cloth bags.

He handed one of them to Qin Tianru and leaned in to whisper, “Go change in the restroom.”

To be fair, he thought the little girl’s outfit looked quite nice. Unfortunately, this era wasn’t ready for such aesthetics. Moreover, he didn’t want her to endure the constant stares throughout their journey.

Too many curious eyes could be quite a nuisance.

Qin Tianru’s eyes flickered with understanding—she instantly realized what was in the bag.

“Okay.”

Soon, she returned to the waiting hall. The eye-catching jeans she had been wearing were now replaced with a pair of blue work pants. Though they didn’t quite match her top, they fit the fashion sensibilities of the time.

But as long as she wasn’t being gawked at like a zoo animal, she could tolerate the rustic style.

As she walked back from the restroom, she noticed the stares had significantly lessened.

Qin Tianru let out a quiet sigh of relief and sat back down next to Qi Han with a smile.

“Hungry? I bought some meat buns. Eat them while they’re hot.”

Qi Han pulled out an oil-paper package from his bag, containing six meat buns and four plain steamed buns.

The gold ring had only sold for eighty yuan, and just two train tickets had cost over twenty—a major expense. Fortunately, this era didn’t require real-name registration for tickets. He’d spent two yuan to have someone else buy a ticket for him.

Otherwise, given Huanhuan’s situation, she wouldn’t even have been able to board the train.

From last night until now, neither of them had eaten anything warm, which wasn’t good for digestion. So, he had gone to a state-run restaurant to buy some freshly steamed buns.

Additionally, he’d specifically bought an aluminum canteen with a shoulder strap to carry hot water. Using a plastic mineral water bottle all the time would have been too conspicuous.

“Okay.”

Qin Tianru picked up a meat bun and began eating it in small bites.

Though conditions in this era were somewhat backward, the things people made were incredibly substantial. For example, this meat bun was easily twice the size of those from her time.

As a result, after finishing just one, her stomach was full.

“Why aren’t you eating more? Does it not suit your taste?”

Noticing she hadn’t reached for another, Qi Han paused mid-bite, his face filled with concern.

After all, this girl came from a far more developed world where food and clothing were undoubtedly a hundred times better than here. If she wasn’t used to the local fare, he could understand.

Qin Tianru dabbed her lips with a tissue and replied obediently, “It tastes great, but I’m already full.”

“Ah, just one bun is enough? Are you sure?” Qi Han was surprised.

In his opinion, one meat bun wasn’t even enough to fill the gaps between his teeth. Even for the girls of this time, two or three meat buns would be no problem.

Was a single bun really enough? That was practically like eating bird feed.

“My appetite is just like this. Any more and I’d be stuffed.”

Qin Tianru smiled as she explained. In her family, meals were always portion-controlled, and over time, it had become a natural habit.

“Alright then.”
