Chapter 15 : You are beautiful today
After the fireworks display, the birthday banquet was nearing its end.
Fu Chengze’s aunt had drunk a little too much and was unconscious, so she was helped into the room that had been reserved for her to rest.
A light breeze blew through the night, and Fu Chengze took a glance at Jiang Yunshu from a distance. He found an excuse to leave the table and went to the car to retrieve his jacket.
He brought the jacket to Jiang Yunshu, but was stopped by his great-aunt.
“Chengze, sit here for a while. Your aunt’s drunk, so we need to free up a seat.”
Fu Chengze had also drunk a lot tonight, but fortunately, he had a good tolerance. Now that he was returning to his seat, he would likely have to accompany a few male elders for another round of drinks, so he simply agreed to his great-aunt’s request and sat down at the main table.
Although the party was organized for Grandma Fu’s birthday, the conversation soon shifted to the topic of children.
“Xiao Shu’s been pregnant for four months now, but she doesn’t look like it at all!” one elder remarked.
Jiang Yunshu responded, “It’s not obvious when I’m wearing clothes, but there’s definitely some change compared to before.”
“Why does she look even thinner than when she got married?” another elder asked.
“She had severe morning sickness a while ago and didn’t want to eat anything, had no appetite, so of course she lost weight,” Grandma Fu said, “I saw it and felt bad for her.”
Xu Shuping added, “I also felt sorry for Xiao Shu. When I was pregnant with Chengze, I didn’t suffer from morning sickness. But Sister Luo helped me out with some tricks to ease the discomfort.”
Jiang Yunshu took Grandma Fu’s hand and comforted her, “I’m fine now, I can eat anything.”
“Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl yet?” the great-aunt asked.
Jiang Yunshu answered gently, “Not yet.”
“Do you want a daughter or a son?” she continued.
Jiang Yunshu had never thought about it. Placing her hand on her belly, her eyes softened, “Either is fine.”
Xu Shuping chimed in, “It’s better to have a son for the first child.”
Her words seemed to slip out, and when she realized, she quickly added, “Grandsons or granddaughters are both fine. It’s just that if it’s a boy, when you have a second child, the older brother can protect the younger sibling.”
Jiang Yunshu sighed inwardly.
According to Xu Shuping’s wishes, she probably wouldn’t be able to fulfill the task unless she gave birth to a boy.
The great-aunt asked, “Chengze, as the father, what would you prefer? A daughter or a son?”
Jiang Yunshu looked at Fu Chengze.
She thought he would give an answer like hers, “Either is fine,” but to her surprise, he paused for a few seconds and then answered calmly, “A daughter.”
The great-aunt laughed loudly, “It’s true what they say, fathers prefer daughters. Looks like that’s true.”
Xu Shuping’s face suddenly changed, and she lightly said, “He always likes to go against me. If I say a girl, he’ll definitely say a boy.”
Grandma Fu spoke up, “Whether it’s a daughter or a son, as long as Xiao Shu has an easy pregnancy and the baby is safe and healthy, that’s the most important.”
The great-aunt smiled, “That’s true. The health and safety of both adults and children is the most important thing.”
The moon was full and bright tonight, casting a soft light across the entire courtyard.
After chatting for a while longer, the birthday banquet came to an end.
Grandma Fu was happy with the birthday celebration, but she was feeling tired now and went to rest with her sister.
Fu Chengze stayed behind to accompany the male elders until the gathering dispersed.
After Jiang Yunshu finished removing her makeup, she heard a knock on the door and went to open it.
“Is everyone gone?” she asked.
Fu Chengze nodded.
“How much did you drink? Are you feeling okay?” Jiang Yunshu knew he didn’t like drinking, only doing so on business occasions or during holidays, and usually avoided it otherwise.
Fu Chengze loosened his tie and sat in the chair, tilting his head back slightly, rubbing his brow, “I’m fine.”
Jiang Yunshu brought him the detox tea she had prepared earlier.
“I saw you had quite a bit to drink. I had someone prepare some detox tea in advance. Drink a little, it should help.”
Fu Chengze took it and drank a few sips before setting it aside.
Watching Jiang Yunshu let her hair down, her unadorned face glowing in the moonlight, he whispered her name, “Yunshu.”
“Yes?” Jiang Yunshu walked over to him.
As she stopped in front of him, Fu Chengze suddenly took her hand, gently rubbing her fingers and tracing the wedding ring on her finger with his thumb.
Despite the strong scent of alcohol on him, there was no sign of drunkenness.
Jiang Yunshu bit her lip and softly asked, “Are you… drunk?”
Fu Chengze didn’t answer but pulled her closer, hugging her softly.
He buried his face in her soft hair, inhaling the scent of tea she always carried, and murmured, “You look very beautiful today.”
The moonlight was gentle, and the surroundings were quiet. Their breaths mingled in the still night air.
Jiang Yunshu’s ears turned red, “I wore makeup today, put on lipstick. It makes my complexion look better.”
Fu Chengze kissed her ear lightly and said in a low voice, “You’re even more beautiful without makeup.”
Jiang Yunshu felt her ears heat up. She couldn’t quite tell if he was drunk or sober.
His embrace wasn’t very tight, probably because he was mindful of the baby, and he could still communicate with her smoothly, not like someone who was drunk.
But if he was sober…
“Are you tired?” His soft voice came again.
Jiang Yunshu was a bit confused, wondering if she had heard wrong, and asked, “What?”
Fu Chengze repeated, “Are you tired standing?”
Jiang Yunshu almost laughed. Even half-drunk, he was still asking if she was tired from standing.
Her tone was gentle, tinged with a smile, “You should let me go first.”
Fu Chengze let her go, but still held her hand tightly, “Sit down.”
His hand was warm, and the heat transferred to her as she looked into his eyes, which had turned intense.
Jiang Yunshu looked at him, her brows furrowed, “Where should I sit?”
Fu Chengze patted his lap.
This man was definitely drunk.
Jiang Yunshu smiled helplessly and patted his hand, “You’ve had too much to drink. It’s late, you should rest.”
Fu Chengze didn’t listen. He lightly grabbed her wrist and pulled her onto his lap.
Jiang Yunshu instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck as she sat on his lap, and the warmth of his breath, mixed with alcohol, blew against her sensitive neck.
In such an intimate position, she felt a little shy.
“Chengze, you really drank too much,” Jiang Yunshu said, “Can you still take a shower?”
When Fu Chengze didn’t respond, she sighed, “Forget it, we’ll just sleep like this tonight. We’ll shower in the morning…”
Fu Chengze held her waist, his gaze fixed on her lips, his throat moving as he gazed at her.
His large hand cupped the back of her head, and he kissed her with his eyes closed.
