Chapter 29.2
Yue Yin stood among the throng of monsters, looking at Captain Li with a calm smile. “Are you really sure about this?”
Initially, she just wanted to live a normal life—reading, gaming, playing pranks online. That kind of life made her happy, and she would’ve continued it. But, if forced otherwise… She could find other ways to entertain herself.
Because in this game, regret and suffering would never fall on her.
At her words, the once-bright room dimmed, shadows seeping in as every creature outside turned its attention to those inside, glaring with cold hatred. From the depths of the house, a sound like crashing waves rose, and the chilling presence of something unfathomable filled the room.
The walls began to warp, becoming a pulsating mass of flesh and bone. The once-sturdy floor turned into a sticky mire, with flames and blood bubbling up from below.
Even the most hardened agents felt a shiver of terror they couldn’t suppress. There was something ancient, horrifying, about to be unleashed here.
Captain Li and his team shared a silent, knowing glance as dread filled their hearts—they were facing something beyond their control.
In the silence, Yue Yin’s gaze was warm as she looked at them, as if she was gently waiting for humanity’s answer.
Outside, the moon shone a strange, blood-red glow across the world, as people everywhere looked to the sky, transfixed.
In that quiet, dark house, Yue Yin waited. Death or destruction—it made no difference to her. Whatever choice humanity made, she’d accept it.
…
Miles away, Jiang Suliu drifted back into his recurring nightmare, returning to that eerie ocean. But this time, the girl wasn’t there—only the dancing, monstrous creatures.
This time, he was no longer a distant observer. He was one of them.
The creatures around him laughed and sneered, pulling him into their wild dance.
“Look! The fool has finally joined us. The Great One called him long ago, yet it took him years to answer!”
“Behold the coming of our god—the Moon of a Thousand Faces, that gray sea of corruption, taking every soul and head it meets.”
Pain! Endless pain! Regret, eternal regret!
“Hear them weep, hear them laugh—the souls of extinct worlds,” the creatures sang in twisted joy. “Now, at last, you will join us!”
In his dream, Jiang Suliu found himself celebrating with a multitude of monsters. He sensed, with a growing certainty, that something terrible was about to happen.
When the Great Old One descended upon Earth, it seemed destruction would be inevitable.
Yet, realizing this did not fill Jiang Suliu with sadness. Unfazed, he danced along with the creatures, singing in exhilaration.
There was no sorrow for the impending extinction of his own species.
His only regret was that he might never see that magnificent deity again.
If humanity vanished, he too would perish.
What a pity.
But to die by the hand of the Great One—wasn’t that an honor?
In the deep ocean of his dream, Jiang Suliu sang, his face twisted into a satisfied, eerie smile.
…
Meanwhile, at the Shen household…
Time dragged on painfully as the walls trembled, something drawing closer and closer.
Captain Li and his team watched Yue Yin, beads of sweat appearing on their foreheads. Their duty demanded they pursue justice without compromise, but they were acutely aware of the horrors that would unfold if they continued.
Despair gripped them all, yet, trusting in their leader and following his orders without question, no one spoke, waiting for Captain Li’s decision in tense silence.
Tears welled in Yu Yu’s eyes as she murmured, “If I’d known… I would’ve eaten roasted pig’s feet yesterday.”
She had been on a diet, holding back from eating at night. If she’d known she’d die, she’d have eaten a whole plate of them.
Xiao Jun felt equally gloomy, realizing it might be time to quit.
Fifteen thousand a month, but was it worth risking his life?
He sighed heavily, looking conflicted. “I wouldn’t have saved up for a house if I’d known. I could’ve taken out my retirement funds, given myself an extra two thousand a month, and traveled.”
Another teammate sniffled, “I didn’t even kiss my wife goodbye this morning… sob sob”
Another teammate cracked, “At least you have a wife! I’ve been single for twenty-eight years—twenty-eight years! And that lousy boss made me work overtime on my date night!”
The “lousy boss,” Captain Li: …?
Hearing these comments, the weight on Captain Li’s heart momentarily lifted with the ridiculousness of it all.
His subordinates were too eccentric—it was embarrassing even for him, their leader!
Yue Yin watched them with a clear gaze, observing this spectrum of human joy and sorrow with faint amusement.
If she let them die here, would that mean she could no longer read novels, watch dramas, read comics, or do her homework?
Thinking of it this way, Yue Yin felt a bit of regret.
Not to mention, she hadn’t yet had a chance to blow up her school.
After a moment, Yue Yin spoke softly, “I haven’t hurt anyone innocent.”
It seemed like both an explanation and a promise.
Captain Li finally exhaled, lowering his weapon. “This is just an investigation. My assessment might not even be accurate.”
He cleared his throat and said, “Explain the situation. If you’re innocent, we won’t give you any trouble.”
Yue Yin smiled, blinking her eyes. “My mother left too quickly, she only had time to tell you part of the story… The truth is, my stepfather illegally seized my late father’s inheritance, which is worth about a few billion.”
Captain Li frowned at this.
It wasn’t that he doubted her story, but he recalled the detailed background report on Yue Yin.
Upon discovering Yue Yin was an A-Class ability user, the Paranormal Incident Management Department had swiftly investigated her past and uncovered her complex background.
The file revealed that her mother, Bai Xiulian, had remarried after inheriting a large fortune from Yue Yin’s biological father. Shortly after, Yue Yin disappeared, only to be found by the Shen family six months ago, where she held a low status—so much so that her previous kidnapping went largely ignored.
Captain Li had even privately thinking that perhaps Yue Yin’s abduction had been a blessing in disguise.
If it hadn’t been for that kidnapping, Yue Yin might never have become such a powerful A-class ability user, still trapped in her old life for who knows how long.
So the moment Yue Yin spoke, Captain Li believed her right away.
Besides, he had interacted with her a few times and knew she wasn’t malicious or deceitful, in fact, she had even helped them eliminate malevolent entities on multiple occasions.
Given this, Captain Li naturally trusted Yue Yin’s integrity over Shen Hao Ping, a man who not only seized others’ assets but mistreated his stepdaughter.
While Captain Li knew some of the backstory, not everyone in the Paranormal Incident Squad had read Yue Yin’s file, so reactions to her account varied.
Yue Yin didn’t seem to care whether they believed her or not, casually explaining, “Today, I told him he needed to return the money soon. For some reason, that really set him off, he got furious and tried to throw me out.”
Hearing this, those with a sharp mind had already pieced together the truth.
Their expressions barely held. Why provoke her?
This was an A-class—or rather, more like an S-class or beyond! If she wanted, she could summon multiple A-class malevolent spirits and destroy an entire city within half an hour.
In a way, her stepfather had guts. Whether he survived was uncertain, but chances were he was long gone.
As expected, Yue Yin continued calmly, “My stepfather resented me deeply and accidentally angered one of my forbidden pets. You know how loyal dogs protect their masters—mine acted to protect me and inadvertently frightened everyone.”
“My mother and everyone else ran off, and in the chaos, my stepfather disappeared too. I’m not sure where he went, maybe he’s still in his room… possibly in a vegetative state after a spirit attack.”
Everyone: …
They turned to look out the window at the hundreds of spirits gathered outside. Judging by the scale, her stepfather’s death had been quite the spectacle, stirring up an entire city’s worth of spirits. Quite a dramatic exit.
With everything now clear, people’s faces held complicated expressions. They no longer blamed Yue Yin but instead directed their frustrations at her clueless stepfather.
Just plain idiotic! Did he not know who he was messing with? Not only had he dragged them out for an emergency call late at night, but he nearly endangered the world along with him.
While the team understood what likely happened, none dared mention it directly, worried she’d continue down a villainous path if provoked.
Finally, Xiao Jun coughed, stepping forward. “We received your report. We’ll investigate further and locate your stepfather as soon as possible.”
Yue Yin beamed, “Great, thank you.”
Xiao Jun took out his notepad and, for formality, asked, “About the forbidden creature you mentioned adopting?”
Captain Li, silent, interjected, “Is it this spirit?”
Yue Yin grinned, hands in her pockets. “Yeah, it’s my pet.”
The ghostly spirit laughed malevolently upon hearing her words but quickly put on a feigned innocent expression, this towering, eerie figure sitting beside Yue Yin with hands neatly placed in front.
“P-pet?” The team’s faces paled at the sight of this terrifying, twisted creature, some breaking into a cold sweat.
Yue Yin smiled brightly. “Of course.”
Recalling how humans interacted with pets, she extended a hand and said, “Dahei, shake.”
The ghostly spirit looked up, stunned, disbelief in its eyes.
Everyone else was silent, their expressions conflicted.
Yue Yin noticed everyone watching her, and seeing the spirit’s hesitation, narrowed her eyes. “Dahei?”
The spirit closed its eyes, a single tear glinting at the corner as Captain Li and Xiao Jun looked on in sympathy.
Dammit! How could this goddess be so heartless?!
Finally, under her warning gaze, the spirit looked utterly humiliated.
In the admiring yet sympathetic stares of the team, it slowly extended its hand into hers.
Yue Yin nodded approvingly and immediately continued, “Lie down, sit up, turn in a circle.”
Under Captain Li’s watchful eye, the twisted, monstrous figure awkwardly followed her commands, rolling on the ground with a hunch, a sight too unsettling to be amusing.
When the performance was over, Yue Yin clapped her hands, her tone delighted. “See, my Dahei is very well-behaved. If he’s so obedient, how could he hurt anyone?”
Everyone: … It’s clear you’re really trying to prove you’re not a villain.
But that’s exactly what makes you even scarier!
