Chapter 38
Yue Yin was busy figuring out how to draft a complaint letter.
After being ditched, she immediately decided to chase down and kill every last one of those people on her bike.
However, as she paid the 199 deposit and an extra two yuan to unlock a shared bike, she realized a rainy day was probably better suited for a taxi.
Ha.
This world was just too absurd.
Staring down at the bike, Yue Yin wished she could destroy the planet on the spot.
But then, if the world ended, there’d be no more grilled cold noodles to enjoy.
After a few seconds of contemplation, she decided to let it go. Instead, she hopped on the bike to hunt down that wretched swollen water demon, determined to make it pay for the cost of the bike.
Diligently pedaling a shared bike to chase down a creature that had stood her up, Yue Yin felt like a god fallen from grace.
The water demon’s trail led her all the way to the outskirts of the city, disappearing near an isolated sewer entrance.
She abandoned the bike and leaped into the passageway.
…
At the Life Association’s ritual site.
“Crack, crack, crack.”
The door splintered under the force of an axe, shattering after two or three strikes.
Amid the scattered wood fragments appeared a bloodied face.
At that moment, the Life Association members felt like they had wandered into the wrong scene. One of them, in shock, demanded, “Who are you?”
“You’re in the wrong place! This is no place for you… Get out!”
Under their terrified stares, Yue Yin stepped inside, her face smeared with blood, wielding a massive axe. She slashed down one of the association members who attempted to block her.
Blood splattered across her face, and the vast hall fell into dead silence.
A drop of blood clung to her eyelash as her icy gaze swept over everyone in the room. “Now then, who should I kill first?”
The man who hadn’t expected her to strike so suddenly instinctively clutched his chest, blood spurting through his fingers. Disbelief and terror filled his eyes as he tried to say something, only to collapse, dead.
The silence was suffocating. Those who had intended to stop Yue Yin now froze in fear.
Blood pooled around her feet as everyone stared, bewildered by this terrifying girl who had appeared out of nowhere.
Looking at the gathering, Yue Yin seemed to realize something, “Oh, so he was the first unlucky one.”
Nearby, a man with glasses, his face splattered with blood from his fallen comrade, was paralyzed with fear.
His breath quickened, he had never felt fear like this, not even on the day he killed his twin brother to join the association.
Just then, Yue Yin turned her gaze directly to him, her eyes dark and fascinated. She smiled. “What’s your name?”
He stammered, “W-What?”
Yue Yin smirked, “What are you just standing there for? Run.”
As soon as she spoke, she launched into her massacre.
The man with glasses saw his body fall to the ground, his head rolling farther and farther away.
As she killed a few more people in the blink of an eye, panic erupted. Screams filled the room.
“Ahhhh!!!”
People scrambled from their seats, desperately fleeing in all directions. Even the new initiates on stage, who had just been inducted into the association, were trembling, trying to hide.
Only the High Priest remained still, his gaze fixed on the familiar face, filled with both awe and disbelief.
He recognized Yue Yin instantly. Though he didn’t know her name, he had never forgotten her face.
When a group of sacrifices was brought in, he had been the one presiding over the ritual.
Mid-ritual, however, agents from the Paranormal Incidents Squad had arrived, forcing everyone to flee. The ceremony failed, and several members, including Uncle Li, were arrested.
The Squad’s leader had intensified efforts to crack down on their association, so failed rituals had become common.
He never gave it much thought afterward, though he’d heard that one of the sacrificial victims was rescued.
What he hadn’t realized was that Yue Yin, the girl he had personally sacrificed, had somehow survived!
Even when the swollen ghoul had reported that their target tonight was a girl who had escaped a ritual years ago, he hadn’t connected her to Yue Yin!
Standing before them now, Yue Yin, wielding a massive axe with a blood-streaked, emotionless face, was no longer the frightened high school girl she had once been.
At that moment, the High Priest finally understood the secret Uncle Li and the others had been hiding.
They had sought permission to conduct this ritual but hadn’t mentioned that the intended sacrifice was Yue Yin, the one who had escaped before. They had kept her a secret.
Uncle Li and the others had long known something was different about Yue Yin. They must have realized that their previous ritual had succeeded in some way!
Something from that ritual had saved her and granted her immense power, a power that resurrected her from certain death!
The High Priest stared in obsessive awe at Yue Yin, glancing at the shattered, reinforced door behind her. A door that even low-tier abilities couldn’t break now bore terrifying handprints.
Could this be human strength?
According to the swollen ghoul’s report, Yue Yin had single-handedly slaughtered Uncle Li and others, along with the A-Level forbidden item they carried. Such power was unfathomable!
She was certainly no ordinary A-Level user; the Great Eye of Destruction must have bestowed something upon her!
A twisted mix of excitement and envy lit up in the High Priest’s eyes.
The Great Eye of Destruction must have made a mistake. It was supposed to be his ritual. The divine gift should have been his.
Now, he would fix that mistake.
All he had to do was sacrifice Yue Yin once more, to reclaim the stolen gift.
Damn Uncle Li and his fools, keeping something this crucial hidden, costing them so much time.
The High Priest looked at Yue Yin with a wicked smile.
In truth, the High Priest and his followers thought almost exactly the same way upon seeing Yue Yin again.
With the hall in chaos, Yue Yin took her time, axe in hand, playing a macabre game of cat-and-mouse, striking down anyone who came too close.
The High Priest called out, “Stop running!!”
Fixing his gaze on Yue Yin, he shouted, “Bring out the forbidden item! The rest of you, restrain her! The Great Eye of Destruction is watching, and those who bravely defend our cause will be richly rewarded!”
The High Priest’s words restored some order to the crowd.
Among the members were those with abilities and those without. Most of the fleeing ones were ordinary people, while the true believers held their ground.
To them, this ritual site was sacred ground, a place where no true believer would flee in the presence of their god.
At that moment, everyone moved into action. A dozen people hurriedly followed the High Priest to release a few sealed A-level forbidden item. As for whether these released entities would indiscriminately attack everyone on site, that wasn’t their concern anymore.
Meanwhile, the other remaining ability users looked tense, fists clenched, and focused intently on Yue Yin.
Oddly, Yue Yin didn’t seem to pay them any attention.
She continued wielding her axe, weaving through the crowd, killing at random. It was as if she hadn’t heard or cared about the High Priest’s earlier threats and orders.
As piercing shrieks echoed around them, enormous stone pillars began to shift. These pillars, so large it would take three or four people to wrap around them, started to crack. Chunks of wall fell away, revealing pale white arms within.
When the dust settled, the faithful were astonished to see four exquisite, massive statues of women emerging from within the pillars. Each statue, standing about ten meters tall, was elegantly posed, with bare limbs and adorned with golden jewelry around their wrists and necks.
With the High Priest’s chanting, the statues opened their eyes and stepped down from their pedestals. They were breathtakingly beautiful yet terrifying, and as they moved, their massive feet crushed the fleeing cult members like insects.
Some of the Life Association members couldn’t comprehend what was happening, but fear gripped them harder. Some shrieked and ran, while others, ecstatic, yelled, “It’s the A64 Forbidden Item! The Death Goddesses!”
Chaos ensued. From the platform, the high priest commanded the Death Goddesses to capture Yue Yin.
Other loyal cult members transformed, crouching down and mutating into grotesque monsters, charging towards her with feral howls.
Yet, in an instant, they found their attacks halted mid-air.
Seconds later, they felt themselves lifted by an unseen force, suspended in mid-air. Terrified, they looked around at one another.
In the next moment, an invisible force crushed their bodies, leaving nothing but a bloody rain that splattered over everyone.
As blood soaked the ground, the Death Goddesses closed in on Yue Yin.
Yue Yin, wielding her axe, deftly leapt onto one of the Death Goddesses, drawing a crescent blade from her back. She reached the statue’s shoulder, her eyes gleaming as she murmured, “Such a perfect head.”
Before the statue understood her words, Yue Yin drove her blade into its neck. She twisted it upwards, whispering, “I want it.” Her eyes sparkled as if beholding a treasure.
The goddess statue’s perfect head dropped to the ground, and as it did, a mist arose, shrouding the area and whisking away all heads within it before dissipating.
Everyone stared in shock, someone mumbling, “Devil… a devil…”
“The devil is here!” cried a woman in high heels, covering her mouth and trembling.
Even the High Priest, who had slaughtered innocents without hesitation, was now stunned, feeling fear surge within him.
Terror spread among the cult members, many losing their nerve.
Despite their faith, even the ability users who had been steadfast now broke ranks, fleeing in fear.
Yue Yin didn’t stop them. She had long sealed off the area, trapping everyone inside.
Tonight, none of them would escape; nothing could quell her fury.
Who could understand her? Soaking in the rain, she’d waited for over an hour, trusting they’d bring her a grilled pancake. Only to be stood up.
Not only that, but the bike-sharing company had kept her 199 yuan deposit.
Fury igniting, she slashed the head off another Death Goddess, her face twisted with anger. From a corner, the bloated ghost who had betrayed her huddled in fear, trembling.
“Where’s my grilled cold noodles?”
At last, Yue Yin stood before the terrified, cowering ghost, wiping the blood off her face and glaring down.
“My grilled cold noodles?” she demanded.
The ghost, trembling uncontrollably, whimpered, “You didn’t pay… I couldn’t steal it.”
Yue Yin looked at him, disgusted. “Useless.” With one swift motion, she decapitated him.
“All of you. Useless.” She glanced at the wall clock. It was nearing ten.
The street vendors would be closing soon.
Realizing she wouldn’t get her grilled pancake tonight, Yue Yin’s anger, which not even slaughtering cultists could soothe, flared higher.
“All of you,” she snarled, her voice growing louder. “Die! Just die already!”
She picked up her axe and her crescent blade, swinging indiscriminately at anyone nearby.
If it hadn’t been for these damned cultists, she’d already be tucked under her warm covers, playing games after a nice late-night snack.
Finally, as the high priest watched his numbers dwindle, he could hold back no longer. “Stop!” he cried. “Whoever you are, the Eye of Destruction will not let you go unpunished!”
Yue Yin didn’t bother correcting them; their so-called Eye of Destruction was nothing more than a thief borrowing someone else’s name. The true entity was next door to her original body.
The high priest, seeing her lack of response, pleaded with passion, “Join us! You belong here with us. Whatever the Paranormal Incident Management told you, think about what you’ve gained since that ritual!”
“You gained the blessing of our lord, and you should be grateful!” His eyes burned with envy, nearly bursting.
Yue Yin smirked, unimpressed. “Idiot. Which ‘lord’ would dare bless me?”
The only reason this body had power was because she was here! It had nothing to do with their so-called Eye of Darkness.
Suddenly, Yue Yin asked, “Do you know Sayegaya?”
The high priest looked blank. Yue Yin scoffed. “Fool.” She thought disdainfully that even if she could recruit him, he was too dim-witted to be her follower.
The bishop continued, undeterred. “The Eye of Destruction granted you these powers! If you don’t return, unimaginable nightmares await!”
Yue Yin chuckled, her blood-soaked face calm as she asked, “So, where’s your lord?”
“If they’re so mighty, where are they now while you’re all being slaughtered?”
The high priest froze. Her words struck a hidden chord of doubt in him and in the remaining believers.
They had clung to faith for so long; why had their god not descended to punish this invader?
Could it be that this was a test of their loyalty? That the god wanted to see their resolve?
Yue Yin watched their faces with a mixture of amusement and pity. “Idiots,” she muttered softly.
Then, with a wry smile, she added, “You know why your ‘lord’ won’t come to save you?”
Gripping her crescent blade, she stood off to the side, laughing to herself. “Because they’re scared of me.”
…
When Captain Li and his team arrived, Yue Yin had already turned the place into a scene of utter carnage.
Severed limbs and pools of blood covered the ground, and faint, dying breaths were barely audible.
The isolation field was opened, and more troops filed in from outside. Captain Li and Xiaojun entered with weapons ready, but their composed expressions faltered, giving way to shock as they took in the scene.
It was beyond words—although they’d seen many paranormal crime scenes before, the horror before them now was in a league of its own.
In this infernal landscape of countless bodies, a young woman sat atop a platform, holding a long blade. She sat sideways, speaking to someone beneath her.
“Y-Yue Yin,” called Yu Yu in fear.
Yue Yin looked up, showing no surprise at seeing them, as if she had anticipated their arrival.
She glanced calmly at Captain Li and his team as they approached and said in an indifferent tone, “What’s the matter?”
As she spoke, she swung her blade without hesitation.
A head fell to the ground, blood spraying, and Xiaojun, who stood further back, flinched. Instinctively, he touched his face, as if checking for blood spatter.
He had seen Yue Yin many times before—she was lively, cheerful, nothing like a high-level ability user, and had even seemed a little intimidated by their Department. Xiaojun had always doubted the Vice Minister’s assessment of her. But now, watching this blood-soaked girl, he finally understood.
The shock was profound, and all present stood silently, staring at the terrifying young woman holding an axe, her body drenched in blood.
Saying they weren’t afraid would be a lie. Yet, no one dared to speak, fearing that any sound might provoke something even more horrifying from Yue Yin.
Just then, a figure emerged from behind Captain Li and Xiaojun.
He had silver hair that fell to his shoulders, wore a black Zhongshan suit, and black gloves.
Stepping forward with calm, unhurried strides, he maintained a serene expression as he approached. His gaze was steady and composed.
At the sight of him, Yue Yin’s indifferent gaze finally stilled.
The man in the Zhongshan suit extended his hand, smiling as he looked at her. “Hello, my name is Bo Jingyun.”
“I’m the Vice Minister of the Paranormal Incident Management. It’s an honor to meet you.”
“Welcome. I hope you enjoy your time here on Earth.”
