Chapter 49
When Lan Yun’er heard his words, her eyes flickered, and she quickly pretended to have bumped into the corner of the table. She cried out in pain and bent down to rub her knee, saying, “Ouch, that hurts.” Playing along like this in the middle of the night was exhausting.
Huo Jinchen knew she was acting, since just a moment ago, she had walked swiftly to the table. He guessed she could see in the dark, too.
The reason he could see in the dark was due to a special, strong intuition, an intuition that seemed connected to her. Perhaps it was her that gave him that unusual ability.
“Are you okay?” Huo Jinchen asked as he approached her, lighting the oil lamp. He looked at her and asked, “Is it serious?”
Lan Yun’er had indeed bumped into the table, so her knee really did hurt. She bit her lip, and her eyes reddened from the pain. “It hurts a lot, really hurts,” she said in a voice tinged with grievance.
After all, her body was flesh and blood, and a bump or scrape really did cause pain.
Huo Jinchen crouched down in front of her to check her knee. When he saw that it was scraped, he frowned slightly. “It’s scraped, you should put some red flower oil on it.”
The red flower oil had been bought a long time ago, before his second brother’s leg had been injured. He wasn’t sure if it would still be effective.
Lan Yun’er shook her head. “No need, I’ll grind some herbs and apply them tomorrow.” This kind of minor injury would heal on its own without any treatment.
Huo Jinchen raised his head and looked at her deeply. “Are you sure?” His eyes locked onto her, and she felt an intense heat from his gaze. Her heartbeat suddenly quickened, and she felt flustered, unable to keep her composure.
She quickly looked away, coughed lightly, and said, “Yeah, I’m sure. But I’d like some water. Can you pour me some?”
She had finished the water on the table but still felt hot. She thought some water might help cool her down.
“Alright, wait for me,” Huo Jinchen replied as he picked up the empty cup and went outside to fetch some water.
Lan Yun’er watched him walk away. His figure appeared particularly tall and slender under the light of the oil lamp, making him seem quite attractive. She leaned her hand on the table, momentarily lost in thought.
When he left, she blinked, suddenly coming back to her senses. She gently tapped her forehead and clicked her tongue in surprise. What was going on with her? How come she was staring at Huo Jinchen like that? She had never acted like this before. What was happening tonight?
But tonight, she truly found him incredibly handsome, so much so that her heart raced and her thoughts became chaotic.
She rubbed her forehead again, muttering to herself, “Am I coming down with something?” But when she checked her pulse, everything seemed fine.
Huo Jinchen brought her a large cup of water.
When she saw him, her heart raced again.
“Thank you,” she said, holding the cup.
She quickly lowered her head, subtly pinching herself. What was happening to her? Every time she looked at Huo Jinchen, she felt overwhelmed with emotion.
“You’re my wife, why are you thanking me?” he smiled and said, sitting beside her to watch her drink.
Under the oil lamp light, her face looked soft and glowing, making her seem even more charming and alluring. As he watched her, he felt a strange sensation stirring inside him.
Lan Yun’er raised the cup and drank deeply, tilting her head slightly, revealing the graceful curve of her neck. The sight made Huo Jinchen’s throat go dry, and he swallowed hard.
“Wife,” he called her softly, leaning in closer.
When Lan Yun’er felt his proximity, she initially felt flustered and restless. Quickly, she stepped away, furrowing her brows at him. “What are you doing?”
Huo Jinchen, seeing her avoid him, furrowed his brow slightly, and his gaze darkened. He stared at her for a moment, then shook his head. “Nothing.”
“I’m done, let’s go to bed. Ah, I’m so sleepy,” she said, setting the cup down, stretching, and yawning as she walked toward the bed.
Huo Jinchen watched her quietly. After she lay down, he extinguished the oil lamp and slowly climbed into bed beside her. Both of them found it hard to sleep that night.
Although Lan Yun’er had drunk two cups of cold water, she still felt very hot. The heat in her body didn’t seem to go away, especially when she sensed Huo Jinchen’s breath. It only seemed to make her feel hotter, causing restlessness.
She turned over onto her side, facing away from him.
It seemed she would need to ask the tree demon on the mountain tomorrow. Perhaps the tree demon would know what was going on with her.
Huo Jinchen, sensing that she had turned away, felt his body stir. Looking at her back, he felt an unbearable dryness in his throat, and the sensation of restlessness inside him only intensified.
That night, neither of them slept well. However, both pretended to have slept soundly, as if they had rested deeply through the night.
The next morning, after Lan Yun’er finished washing up, she went to make breakfast. Huo Jinchen got up and helped her, both of them busy in the kitchen. They appeared perfectly harmonious together.
As Lan Yun’er watched him wash the vegetables, her eyes flickered, and her heart started racing again. Since last night, whenever she saw Huo Jinchen, she felt this inexplicable excitement, as if she wanted to hold him and kiss him.
She felt like this wasn’t normal.
It was as though she had fallen in love—no, more like she was in a passionate love.
Huo Jinchen felt the same way.
He looked at her beautiful face and found himself wanting to move closer. But when he did, a restless feeling inside him flared up, making him nearly lose control.
During breakfast, the two exchanged frequent, flirtatious glances. The air between them was thick with tension.
Zhong Cui Tao, who was nearby, smiled and whispered to Lan Yun’er, “Xiao Yun, your relationship with Jinchen is really good. So good that it’s almost enviable.”
Lan Yun’er raised her eyebrows in surprise and looked at Zhong Cui Tao. “Huo Jinchen and I have a good relationship? We’re just…”
“Alright, Xiao Yun, no need to explain. We all understand,” Zhong Cui Tao winked at her, giving her a look that said, “You don’t need to hide it.”
Lan Yun’er: “…” Was it because she had been stealing glances at Huo Jinchen? She didn’t even know why she kept looking at him. It felt like her eyes weren’t her own anymore.
She was convinced something was wrong with her!
Huo Jinchen, overhearing Zhong Cui Tao’s words, glanced at Lan Yun’er, his gaze deepening as he observed her.
