Chapter 39
Lin Yanqing entered the room.
He was wearing his lab coat, which he hadn’t had time to take off. He was tall and upright, with gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose, his face handsome and refined. He held a syringe in his hand, maneuvering around the obstacles and heading straight for the bed.
The floor was messy, with crimson blood still bubbling.
A cold, oppressive atmosphere hung in the air.
He stepped over the blood bubbles, reached the bedside, and saw his brother’s current state.
Black-red tentacles lay limply across the entire bed, the sticky, muscular tentacles had feasted, but they didn’t have the expected fullness. Instead, they seemed to have been drained of all their energy. The person in the center of the tentacles had a pale, cold face, his eyes closed, his breathing shallow.
The flushed cheeks indicated he was still in a state of frenzy.
Sensing the familiar scent, Lin Yanzhou opened his eyelids and said in a hoarse voice, “Brother.”
Lin Yanqing hummed in response, plunged the needle into his brother’s neck. As the liquid flowed in, Lin Yanzhou opened his eyes and asked, “What time is it?”
Lin Yanqing threw away the syringe.
The room was already quite dirty. He didn’t have the habit of taking his trash with him.
“You’re not in a suitable state to go out. Rest at home,” Lin Yanqing said. He paused for a moment, then asked, “The rut is hard to endure. How much longer can you hold out?”
Lin Yanzhou covered his neck, looked down at the band-aid perfectly stuck to the back of his hand, and a sudden smile appeared on his usually cold and indifferent face.
“Soon.”
Lin Yanqing didn’t say anything else. As he was leaving, he complained, “You better take care of your business soon. The experimental animals the institute purchased have all been eaten by you.”
A black fleshy tentacle quietly slipped out from behind him, surveying the chaotic, bloody ground. It seemed to find nothing to eat and retreated back into his lab coat.
Lin Yanzhou lay quietly, his expression unreadable.
He was different from Lin Yanqing. Lin Yanqing’s rut came late, just like his personality. He wasn’t interested in anything except research, oh, and now he was interested in Zhang Canying.
Lin Yanzhou, on the other hand, had been reclusive since childhood, even excessively morbid. His parents said he was the perfect inheritor of their lineage’s genes.
What genes?
Probably brutal, cruel, and insane.
Just like the frenzy he was experiencing at the moment. He preferred to call the rut frenzy. Animal blood could no longer satisfy his desires. He craved the “taste” of Wei Jing’an more than the satisfaction of tearing flesh and eating.
He Wenjiang’s phone call came in.
He was a classmate from the finance department and the organizer of this mountain climbing trip.
Lin Yanzhou picked up the phone and left the room.
He Wenjiang’s voice came through, “When are you coming? Those girls are all clamoring to see you. They say I’m lying to them. What am I lying about? This mountain climbing trip was completely funded by the mountaineering club. They didn’t have to pay a dime. Just because you didn’t come, they say I’m lying…”
Lin Yanzhou had no time to listen to his rambling. He said in a hoarse voice, “Video.”
He Wenjiang said “ah” in response, not understanding. Immediately, a video call from Lin Yanzhou rang. He was startled! Lin Yanzhou actually called him on video? He answered.
Lin Yanzhou: “Let me see.”
He Wenjiang was still confused: “See what?”
Lin Yanzhou rubbed his throbbing forehead. His pupils were still red, and he was standing in the shadows, so it was hard to see him clearly.
“How many people.”
They were still on the bus, a few minutes away from their destination. He Wenjiang stood up, holding his phone, and turned on the rear camera. He turned around, “Didn’t I tell you? There are really a lot of people.”
“Turn back.”
“Ah? Where?”
“To the right, back row.”
“Oh, oh.”
Lin Yanqing leaned against the wall, holding a cup of coffee, staring at his brother whose expression had suddenly changed. The corners of his lips curled up.
He looked like he was enjoying the show.
Lin Yanzhou stood in the shadows, the tentacles wriggling behind him suddenly doubled in size, exuding a thick sense of malice and jealousy. This emotion, which almost burned his heart and lungs, made his eyes even colder.
He hung up the phone and left without looking back.
He even forgot to retract the tentacles behind him. They fell angrily behind him, ready to rush to the “battlefield” with their master.
On the other side, on the bus.
Wei Jing’an wasn’t feeling well. She must have gotten motion sickness. She closed her eyes, resting her head against the window. Zhao Jingze looked at her worriedly and asked, “Are you feeling dizzy?”
Wei Jing’an hummed softly in response, sounding weak.
Zhao Jingze rummaged through his bag and found a few fist-sized oranges. They were bright orange and looked delicious. He handed them to her, “I used to get motion sickness too. Chewing gum, listening to music, and taking motion sickness pills didn’t really work. But the smell of oranges actually helped.”
Wei Jing’an took the orange and said thank you, “I took motion sickness pills before I got on the bus.”
She frowned slightly, turned her head, her eyes filled with uncomfortable tears, looking very pitiful. She had even taken motion sickness pills, but she still got motion sickness. She could have endured it if Lin Yanzhou had been on the bus, but he wasn’t.
He tricked her into coming.
Wei Jing’an unconsciously bit her lip.
Her eyes held a hint of resentment.
Zhao Jingze watched her take the bright orange orange and hold it under her nose. Her nose wrinkled like a hamster’s, inhaling the sour and sweet scent. He didn’t look away, his cheeks flushed, and he stammered, “Buses can definitely make you motion sick. If you find the smell of oranges comfortable, I have more…”
He turned his head and saw He Wenjiang standing up. He continued talking to Wei Jing’an. Seeing that she was closing her eyes to rest, the bright light shone on her face. He raised his arm and pulled down the window shade, blocking the sunlight.
A cool breeze blew from the air conditioner vent. He rubbed his arms.
The bus stopped at the foot of the mountain, and the group of people, carrying their luggage, walked up the path towards Tanshan Park.
Wei Jing’an popped a chocolate into her mouth and followed behind the crowd, walking slowly upwards. Her legs started to tremble halfway up, and she had to deal with Zhao Jingze’s constant inquiries.
“There was a grand meteor shower a hundred years ago. It is said that alien species came with it that day and were eventually taken to the X Research Institute… Have you heard of this? I don’t believe in aliens or anything.”
“It’s okay.”
Zhao Jingze glanced at her. She didn’t seem interested in this topic. He racked his brains and said, “Tanshan Park is very beautiful. I’ve been in Qingcheng for three years and haven’t been here. What do you think of it?”
Wei Jing’an stopped, took a breath, and patiently replied, “The scenery is beautiful, and the air is good.”
Zhao Jingze smiled, “I think so too.” He walked a few more steps and finally noticed that Wei Jing’an, who was panting heavily, seemed to be struggling with her heavy backpack, “Let me help you with that.”
Wei Jing’an politely thanked him and declined, “No need, I can manage. We’ll be at Tanshan Park soon, and we can rest then. Besides, you have quite a bit of stuff too.”
Upon arriving at Tanshan Park, He Wenjiang chose the best spot for viewing and then directed everyone to set up tents.
Zhang Wei was also on this trip.
He Wenjiang was Zhang Wei’s pursuer. He fell in love with her at first sight and pursued her relentlessly. But water has feelings, and flowers are indifferent. After being rejected countless times by Zhang Wei, he willingly stepped back to become a gentle and considerate guardian.
As the organizer of this trip, he naturally had to take on the task of assigning tasks. He naturally assigned his sweetheart the easiest and most trivial tasks. Zhang Wei and the girls who came with her were assigned to organize and sort the food they brought.
The boys were responsible for setting up the tents.
He Wenjiang assigned everyone their tasks, then pointed at Wei Jing’an and another boy, “You two… I heard that the water boiled in Tanshan Park has a sweet taste. The lake is nearby. Go get some water. We’ll boil something to eat here at noon.”
Wei Jing’an hadn’t even caught her breath when she picked up the bucket He Wenjiang gave her and followed the boy to find a nearby water source.
The lake water was clear, and the birdsong in the mountains was pleasant.
Wei Jing’an placed the bucket beside her and squatted down, thinking she would rest before getting water. She had just taken out some energy-boosting food from her pocket when the boy next to her had already filled the bucket and was standing there staring at her.
“What are you dawdling about?” His tone was unpleasant.
Wei Jing’an looked at him and said softly, “I’m a little slow. You go ahead.”
The boy picked up the bucket and left.
Wei Jing’an had rested enough. She lowered the bucket into the lake water, filled only half of it, and lifted it up. The ripples on the surface of the lake spread out in circles, stirring up the mud at the bottom, and the clear water suddenly became murky.
Wei Jing’an walked forward, oblivious.
The blue fleshy tentacle moved slowly forward, suddenly wrapping around Wei Jing’an’s ankle. Before she could react, it quickly dragged her down into the water.
The surface of the lake made a splashing sound as a heavy object plunged in.
Then, it returned to calm.
