Chapter 15: Daddy Feels Heartache

Yu Mozhi froze. He looked down at the little one in his arms. The child was holding up a cup of water, already reaching it toward him.

Her round eyes sparkled brightly, clearly having already forgotten most of what had just happened.

Children’s emotions come and go so quickly. And it’s often these straightforward, seemingly matter-of-fact words that pierce the softest part of an adult’s heart.

She had clearly already forgotten why she was upset.

Looking into the little one’s eyes, Yu Mozhi lowered his head. Following Mianmian’s small hand, he carefully supported her little hand and drank the water she offered.

“Alright, go wash your hands. Mianmian’s getting ready to eat.”

“Okay!”

The little one jumped down from the chair with a bounce and cheerfully skipped toward the bathroom. “Daddy, Daddy, come help Mianmian wash her hands!”

Her sweet, milky voice rang out at the same time as the ringtone from the phone Yu Mozhi had casually placed on the sofa.

The little one immediately froze in place, whipping her head around like she was facing an enemy, staring at the phone on the sofa.

Probably because of what happened in the morning, she had already linked that phone with people who bullied Daddy. Plus, after hearing Yu Mozhi say it wasn’t safe around him lately, the little one instinctively wanted to run over to him.

Yu Mozhi calmly caught the little one and lifted her into his arms. He glanced at the incoming call displayed on the phone he had left on the sofa, and his eyes dimmed slightly.

Without saying a word, he turned around and carried the little one straight into the bathroom.

Mianmian propped her little body up and looked over at the sofa. “Daddy, the phone! The phone is ringing! Is it something bad?! Mianmian will help Daddy scold it!”

Yu Mozhi: …

He held down the fidgeting little one in his arms with one hand and continued walking in with her. “It’s not a bad person. He’ll stop calling soon. You just focus on washing your hands and eating.”

He sat the little one on the edge of the sink. She started swinging her short little legs back and forth in dissatisfaction, her cheeks puffed up.

Yu Mozhi reached out and rested his large hand on Yu Mianmian’s fluffy little head. “Be good.”

The little one instinctively rubbed her head against his palm, blinking her big eyes. “Mianmian is always good.”

Mianmian is Daddy’s little fairy fish!

Yu Mozhi’s pale lips curved into a smile. His face, always elegant and clean-cut, softened as the smile melted away his usual coldness. He rolled up his sleeves, cleaned a towel, and gently wiped the little one’s hands and face.

Within minutes, the little one was gripping a spoon and scooping sweet eight-treasure porridge into her mouth. From time to time, she would turn her head and take a bite of the jianbing guozi (savory Chinese pancake) from Yu Mozhi’s hand. She was still young, and not very used to using a spoon, so the dark red porridge stuck to her fair little face, making her look just like a little tabby cat.

But she ate seriously, spoonful after spoonful. Once she started eating, it was like she’d entered another world entirely. Watching her eat actually made Yu Mozhi feel unusually hungry too.

However, after returning, Yu Mozhi had taken a closer look and realized the little girl was rather thin. And because it was somewhat awkward earlier, he hadn’t properly checked for the injuries on her body. She had been abused before… Could it be that she had gone hungry in the past, and that’s why she was so fixated on eating well now?

As he fed the little one, the ringtone from the phone finally stopped. It was replaced by a text message.

Yu Mozhi casually picked up the phone and replied:

“Raising a kid.”
