Chapter 29: Righteous Little Koi
Although saying “I want Daddy” was indeed sweet, that earlier sentence—“Daddy, will you still give me food?”—was even more heartfelt and sincere.
Yu Mozhi silently stared at the little one in his arms.
Staring into her big, sincere eyes, in the end, he couldn’t say a single word.
Perhaps he had left this little dumpling with a lingering sense of insecurity, especially considering how Yu Jingxing had abused her before.
Yu Mozhi had seen the injuries on her body. They weren’t particularly serious, but children’s skin is delicate—even a pinch could leave a red mark. It had been nearly half a month since Yu Jingxing’s accident and death. He hadn’t had many relatives around, so the funeral had been handled hastily and finished in just a few days.
Yet, the bruises and pinch marks on the little dumpling’s body still hadn’t completely faded. If yelling and hitting had been a regular occurrence, who knew if starving her had also become a common punishment?
And so, this little girl—only three or four years old—had already made it her mission to find food for herself.
Thinking of that, Yu Mozhi couldn’t help but feel a pang of heartache.
If only he had known earlier—
That thought suddenly popped into his head. If only he had known earlier that Yu Jingxing had somehow gotten a child like this…
“Daddy?”
The little dumpling was still cupping Yu Mozhi’s face in her hands. Tilting her head, she looked at him with wide, curious eyes and spoke with a hint of confusion, trying to act cute.
Yu Mozhi snapped out of his thoughts, fingers tightening slightly as he mocked his own thinking.
It had only been two days, and yet he was already being swayed by this little rascal. He should be realistic. He wasn’t very emotional to begin with, and he really was just like some of the heartbroken fans said—he didn’t care much about them.
So, before the little dumpling had come looking for him, even if he had known the truth, he probably wouldn’t have cared. Because Yu Jingxing meant nothing to him, and whatever happened to Yu Jingxing’s child had nothing to do with him.
Nothing could change that.
Yet for the first time, Yu Mozhi felt a strange, indescribable emotion rising in his chest.
“Daddy!”
Seeing that Daddy hadn’t responded in a while, the little dumpling grew unhappy. She started to wiggle around in his arms. Just moments ago she’d felt a bit guilty, but then she remembered she had already given all her luck to Daddy. Daddy had to keep his word!
“Daddy! Mianmian already gave you all her luck, you promised to feed me! You can’t go back on your word!”
The little dumpling declared righteously, her soft, chubby face full of justice.
That sweet, childish voice instantly pulled Yu Mozhi back to reality. The corners of his lips tugged upward in a faint smile.
There were quite a few eyes on them now, and it seemed like someone even raised a phone to take a picture.
Liu Wu, who was more sensitive to cameras, looked like he was about to step forward and stop it. But Yu Mozhi waved him off.
Those taking pictures might not even recognize them, but if they went forward to confront them, it would definitely attract more unnecessary attention. And with the little one in his arms, if a crowd gathered, something could easily go wrong.
So, with the hand carrying their things, he pulled the little dumpling closer into his embrace, using it to shield her soft, adorable little face.
“You’ll definitely get your food. Be good or you’ll fall.”
“Aw.”
Her chubby little face was now pressed against Yu Mozhi’s shoulder. She couldn’t see anything anymore, and her soft little voice was muffled. But she still held tightly onto Yu Mozhi’s neck and didn’t forget to ask:
“Daddy, Daddy, what are we having for lunch today?”
