Chapter 39: The Exquisitely Delicate Little Dumpling
The exquisitely delicate little dumpling was draped over Yu Mozhi’s shoulder, her soft hair tied into a small tuft. Whoever had done her hair clearly wasn’t very skilled—the strands around the tuft were sticking out messily, and after a nap, her hair was fluffy and tousled.
Her fair, slightly pinkish face was unbelievably adorable and flawlessly delicate. With her rosy, translucent lips and big, dewy eyes still misty with sleep, she looked impossibly lovable.
He truly hadn’t seen many children with such perfect features.
The assistant director’s fingers twitched slightly, tempted to touch, but when he noticed her feet didn’t even touch the ground, he hesitated. He thought of his own niece—cute, yes, but spoiled to the point of being unmanageable, throwing tantrums at the slightest thing. That made him uncertain.
And this child had just called Yu Mozhi “Daddy”? He hadn’t heard anything about Yu Mozhi getting married—let alone having a child.
“This little one is…?”
“Uh… you could say she’s Brother Mo’s daughter. But she’s not his biological child, so it’s a bit complicated to explain.” Liu Wu laughed awkwardly and signaled that it would be better to explain when the little one wasn’t around.
After all, they’d heard that such an adorable little girl had previously been abused. The police had even recommended that she be treated with extra care. If anything seemed off, they advised seeking a child psychologist. It was clear the girl’s understanding of the world wasn’t fully formed. Some things, even if you tried to explain them, simply wouldn’t make sense to a child so young. Certain concepts just can’t be taught to a child that age all at once.
Hearing this, the assistant director nodded and didn’t press further. Instead, he smiled and waved at the little dumpling.
The little dumpling was very polite, her large eyes still misty with sleep. “Hello, Uncle. My name is Yu Mianmian.”
Her sweet, soft little voice was so adorable it could melt someone’s heart. Realizing someone had seen her sleeping, the little dumpling seemed a bit shy. As she spoke, she tried to curl up in her daddy’s arms, as if to hide. That clever, cute little gesture didn’t give off any spoiled or bratty vibes at all—nothing like the behavior of children who were pampered into unruliness.
“Oh my, hello Mianmian. What a well-behaved child! My niece won’t even say hello when she sees people,” the assistant director said with a chuckle.
He led them into the room. Seeing the group enter, Director Kong impatiently tapped the table. “Unrelated people out! Why are so many people piling in here—what do you think this is?!”
“Old Kong!” The assistant director quickly spoke up, seeing how the little dumpling was startled by Director Kong’s loud voice. “Lower your voice, will you? This is the last session before we’re done for the day. They’re already here, so let them stay. Don’t scare the kid.”
“Kid? What kid…” As he spoke, Director Kong’s voice gradually softened in confusion.
The assistant director had entered the room first, just enough to block the view of the child in Yu Mozhi’s arms. Now, the little dumpling curiously peeked her small head out from behind him. Today, she wore a little bunny jacket with two carrot-shaped decorations swinging from her chest.
Those bright, clear eyes made Director Kong feel slightly awkward. The little dumpling wiggled her small body, asking Yu Mozhi to set her down. She then tugged at the corner of his shirt and obediently said, “Mianmian won’t cause trouble. Mianmian is a good girl! Daddy can go to work. Mianmian can let Uncle take her to the little park outside.”
“Ahem.” Director Kong cleared his throat awkwardly. Meeting the assistant director’s teasing gaze, he gestured to the assistant to bring over a chair. “It’s fine, let her sit over here and watch…”
The little dumpling tilted her head curiously.
“It’s cold outside, and there’s not much to do,” Director Kong added, his tone softening without even realizing it.
