Chapter 5: It’s Mianmian’s Turn to Care for Daddy!

The overly youthful yet resolute little voice carried such strong emotion that Yu Mozhi froze for a moment.

The little dumpling clung tightly to the corner of his shirt, eyes shining brightly. “Mianmian only has Daddy! Mianmian will protect Daddy and take care of Daddy!”

Before, Daddy protected Mianmian and raised Mianmian. Now it’s Mianmian’s turn to take care of him in his old age!

Those big, watery eyes stared straight at him.

“Mianmian only has Daddy left…?”

That one sentence struck a soft spot in Yu Mozhi’s heart. He snapped out of it, both amused and a little helpless.

Take care of him? How could a three- or four-year-old little snowball take care of anyone?

What, by selling that squishy little body of hers?

“Mr. Yu?” the police officer beside him also sensed something unusual. He looked at the little dumpling with concern, trying his best to persuade Yu Mozhi, hoping to find a proper home for the child.

Yu Mozhi seemed to sigh and stood up.

The fabric slipped from the little dumpling’s fingers, and she instantly felt like lightning had struck her. Her eyes filled with despair. She opened her mouth wide—whatever restraint she had was about to disappear—and in the next second, she seemed ready to burst into tears.

“Come here.”

Yu Mozhi stepped forward without stopping, his voice muffled by the mask but still audible.

The little dumpling, who had just been about to cry at the top of her lungs, froze upon hearing his voice. The whimper caught in her throat, and only then did she notice his slow pace—like he was waiting for her. Her chubby little face blinked in surprise, and her teary eyes suddenly cleared up. She immediately brightened and bounced after him, reaching out with her tiny hands to grab hold of Yu Mozhi’s hand. She then turned to the police officer who had helped her find her daddy and cheerfully said goodbye.

Grandpa Jade was right—police uncles are good people!!

Yu Mozhi let her hold his hand and turned slightly to look at the two officers.

The two officers were still a bit stunned, mid-motion as if they were still trying to console the child.

Wait—this little dumpling’s emotions change that fast? The tail end of her crying hadn’t even finished, and she was already hopping off happily and waving goodbye?

Honestly, this little one had some drama in her.

What were they, just her tools?

Well… maybe they were.

The two officers exchanged amused, helpless looks. Still, by reflex, they lifted their hands and waved goodbye to the soft, adorable little dumpling.

Yu Mozhi frowned slightly. “Weren’t there procedures to go through?”

One of the officers smacked his forehead. “Oh! Right!”

They’d been so focused on the little dumpling that they forgot about the formalities. Since Yu Mozhi was a relative and willing to take custody of the homeless little girl, the paperwork was processed quickly. Plus, the little dumpling kept sweetly calling him “Daddy,” over and over, clearly unwilling to change it. That sugary little voice probably softened Yu Mozhi up too. Within minutes, his name was written down as her legal guardian.

The pair—one tall, one tiny—finally left the police station together.

The little dumpling, who barely reached Yu Mozhi’s thigh, followed along next to the tall man. His long legs and upright posture, with a refined side profile, still looked flawless even behind the mask. His coldness made him seem utterly unapproachable.

He let his arm hang by his side, allowing the little dumpling to joyfully cling to his fingers. He looked like someone completely incapable of taking care of others.

The officers had just put away the paperwork, but their eyes couldn’t help trailing after the duo.

“He doesn’t seem to like kids much, huh? Can he really take care of her? That little one clearly didn’t have a good life before. I’m not sure about this.”

“I caught his name just now. I think he’s some kind of public figure. Recently there’ve been some scandals stirring up online—not sure how true they are.”

“Well, with the internet, who knows what’s real anymore.”

They were still worrying when they suddenly saw the tall man pause mid-step. He turned around, crouched down, and scooped the little dumpling into his arms.

She was caught off guard but showed no fear at all. She instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck and excitedly turned her head to wave goodbye at the officers.

The two officers automatically lifted their hands and gave her awkward auntie-like waves with matching goofy smiles, then paused—staring at each other in surprise before shrugging.

That little cub was just too cute. Even ice could melt under her charm. Just like that, their worries began to fade.
