Chapter 24: The Back
Having said that, Leng Mohan turned decisively and left, leaving Liang Yin standing alone, gazing at his receding figure.
This was the man she had secretly admired for three years, and now he had left such a deep scar on her world. The pain in Liang Yin’s heart surged like a tide, and unstoppable tears streamed down her delicate cheeks.
The guards outside the door were also deeply shocked by this scene. They never imagined that the rumors were true.
Commander Leng had actually brought a wife back, and his attitude clearly showed his deep affection and love for her. This news spread rapidly through the military camp, causing quite a stir.
Everyone was captivated by Leng Mohan’s words, fueling their curiosity about Luo Jiaojiao.
Those who had never met her were even more eager to see her, to find out what kind of woman could captivate Leng Mohan so completely.
Meanwhile, Luo Jiaojiao was oblivious to everything happening outside. She was lost in a sweet dream, sleeping soundly in bed, as if the whole world had nothing to do with her.
Luo Jiaojiao missed Leng Mohan’s announcement in the broadcast room and only learned about it later from others. Seeing that the matter had been clarified, Leng Mohan hurried back to his residence, intending to take Luo Jiaojiao to see their future new home.
Returning home, he found Luo Jiaojiao still asleep. He didn’t disturb her, but quietly sat on a nearby stool, reading a book.
When Luo Jiaojiao woke up, it was already past five in the afternoon.
She gently rubbed her sleepy eyes. When she noticed Leng Mohan sitting beside her, she paused for a moment before regaining her senses.
She slowly sat up, looked at Leng Mohan, and asked in her characteristic soft voice, “Leng Gege, when did you come back? What time is it now?”
Leng Mohan, who had already noticed her waking up, replied, “I just got back a short while ago. It’s already five o’clock. Get up, wash your face to freshen up. I’ll go get you some food. I’ll heat up the dishes, and we can eat soon.” He looked at Luo Jiaojiao gently, his eyes full of affection.
As Leng Mohan was about to leave with the food containers and the food he brought back from the state-run restaurant, he suddenly stopped, turned back to look at Luo Jiaojiao, his eyes full of concern. “I brought you back some hot water. If you’re thirsty, drink some. It’s warm water, and I’ve washed the cup thoroughly.”
He remembered that he had only thought of this after returning downstairs, so he went back to the office to get a cup and fill it with water, even carefully washing the cup, fearing she might dislike it.
Looking back, Leng Mohan found it somewhat unbelievable. When did he become so concerned about someone, so attentive to their needs?
Luo Jiaojiao, surprised, looked at him. She hadn’t expected Leng Mohan to be so thoughtful and considerate.
This care warmed her heart, and she felt a surge of inexplicable emotion. She nodded gently and said with a smile, “Okay, thank you.”
“Wait a moment, I’ll go get the food and heat the dishes. After we eat, I’ll take you to see our future home. I’ve also specially applied for two extra days off, enough for us to tidy up and buy the necessary furniture. You can see how you want to decorate it. Once I’ve made all the arrangements, we’ll move in.”
“As for the wedding, we won’t have one for now, but I’ll prepare the ‘Three Turns and One Ring’ and other things you need. Just tell me your wishes, and I’ll do my best to fulfill them. I will never let you suffer any grievances,” Leng Mohan said softly, gazing at Luo Jiaojiao.
Leng Mohan looked at her deeply and softly said, “Your parents passed away less than a month ago. Now is not the right time for a big wedding.”
He paused, then continued, “After we move in, I’ll arrange a gathering to introduce you to my comrades and superiors. Although there won’t be a grand wedding, I will do everything I can to give you what you deserve. For now, we don’t plan to have children, so we won’t have much pressure on expenses.”
Luo Jiaojiao nodded gently. She understood the sensitivity of the period after her parents’ death, and that holding a wedding now was indeed inappropriate. She softly replied, “I’ll leave it to you. You arrange it.” They smiled at each other, their mutual understanding and acceptance deepening their affection.
Luo Jiaojiao softly asked Leng Mohan with anticipation, “Can you buy me a sewing machine? I don’t need anything else.”
Leng Mohan’s eyebrows rose slightly at this request. He had already promised to fulfill her needs. He immediately asked, “Don’t you need a watch and a bicycle?” Luo Jiaojiao resolutely shook her head and earnestly said, “I don’t really like wearing watches, and I don’t know how to ride a bicycle, so it would be useless.” Leng Mohan was somewhat surprised by her answer. He thought for a moment and suggested, “Then I can buy the watch and keep it at home, so you can check the time whenever you want.”
“Actually, there’s no need. If I want to know the time, I can just look at the sun. I just asked you because I was too lazy to get up and take a look. My teacher taught me how to tell time by the sun,” Luo Jiaojiao replied lightly, feeling that buying a watch was unnecessary.
“Let’s save the money. Raising children is very expensive,” Luo Jiaojiao said with feeling. Luo Jia Hui had enrolled her in many courses and hired several tutors to help her excel and marry well. Therefore, her adoptive mother, Lin Li, always complained about the expense.
Luo Jiaojiao remembered initially telling them not to hire teachers, that she didn’t want to study, but she was relentlessly pressured. At that time, she thought they genuinely wanted the best for her.
Only later did she hear them say that they were merely grooming her to become a lady of high society, a tool to attract the wealthy, and she dared not mention it again. Although Lin Li didn’t want to spend so much money on her, she still hired many teachers for her future marriage into a wealthy family.
Luo Jiaojiao’s teachers were excellent. They treated her better than her adoptive parents, certainly aided by the generous compensation from the Luo family, but more so because of Luo Jiaojiao’s innate talent and charm.
“Jiaojiao, what are you thinking about? Even if raising children is expensive, we can’t deprive you,” Leng Mohan asked softly, his eyes full of concern.
He knew that he wouldn’t deprive either his children or Luo Jiaojiao of anything. She was even more important to him than his children.
