Chapter 5: Choice
“Okay.” Luo Jiaojiao sensed Leng Mohan’s dissatisfaction and indifference. She understood she had to make a choice.
She nodded lightly, obediently following beside him, her heart filled with confusion and worry.
Luo Jiaojiao keenly sensed the anger radiating from Leng Mohan. Her heart was uneasy; she wondered if it was because of her involvement with Liu Kai’s uncle.
“Xiao Kai, I’m married. This is my husband.” Luo Jiaojiao turned to Liu Kai, her tone firm, then quickly caught up with Leng Mohan, leaving the place.
Her new shoes were a little tight, but she ignored the discomfort, wanting only to catch up with Leng Mohan.
Leng Mohan reached the car and opened the rear passenger door. Luo Jiaojiao looked at him, puzzled. Shouldn’t they be sitting in the front?
However, the moment she saw Leng Mohan, her doubts vanished.
Leng Mohan extended his hand, gesturing for her to get in. As Luo Jiaojiao took his hand, she couldn’t help but explain, “There’s really nothing between me and Liu Zimo, Liu Kai’s uncle.”
What she said wasn’t entirely untrue. She and Liu Zimo had never explicitly expressed their feelings for each other. After learning about her true parentage, she had considered finding Liu Zimo, but Liu Zimo’s mother made her stance clear—she didn’t want her to contact Liu Zimo. So, Luo Jiaojiao let go of that obsession.
Luo Jiahui originally planned to adopt Luo Jiaojiao and find a good match for her in a couple of years.
However, Luo Meihui didn’t seem to want Luo Jiaojiao to have an easy life. Unexpectedly, Luo Meihui contacted Leng Mohan, intending for him to marry Luo Jiaojiao. For Luo Jiaojiao, this was a golden opportunity to escape her predicament.
Rather than being a controlled adopted daughter in Luo Meihui’s house, she might as well seize this chance and try a new life.
Hearing Luo Jiaojiao’s explanation, Leng Mohan was surprised. He hadn’t expected her to explain herself, and seeing the worry and fear in her eyes, he nodded gently and said softly, “I understand. Get in.”
Leng Mohan didn’t pay much attention to her explanation. Whatever the connection between her and Liu Zimo, it no longer mattered.
Their fate had run its course, and there would be no further intersection in the future. Such worries were unnecessary.
He looked into her clear eyes, devoid of any impurities, sincere and forthright. This made him willing to give her his trust, willing to give her another chance.
Luo Jiaojiao endured a bumpy car ride, while Leng Mohan was focused on getting back to the army as quickly as possible. They spent a long night in the car, finally reaching the town near the army base the next day at noon.
“What’s wrong? Weren’t we supposed to hurry back?” Luo Jiaojiao asked Leng Mohan, confused.
Due to a sleepless night, Luo Jiaojiao looked haggard.
Leng Mohan turned to her and said, “You didn’t bring anything. You need toiletries and clothes. Let’s go buy them first, then we’ll go back.”
Hearing him casually mention that she had nothing, ripples stirred in Luo Jiaojiao’s heart.
In fact, the clothes and shoes she was wearing were all chosen and bought for her by him.
She bit her lip, a determined glint in her eyes as she looked at Leng Mohan. “I may not have a lavish dowry, and I’m truly sorry for that.”
Luo Jiaojiao’s voice held a hint of apology, but then her words were filled with determination. “I promise I’ll do my best to take care of you. Although I’ve never done housework, cooking and laundry are unfamiliar to me, but I’m willing to learn and grow.”
She paused, a blush creeping onto her cheeks. “The elders in the yard praised my physique, saying I’m easy to bear children. I’ll definitely give you two healthy sons; you won’t regret marrying me.”
After Luo Jiaojiao finished speaking, she nervously looked up, her gaze fixed on Leng Mohan’s face, silently praying he wouldn’t dislike her.
Leng Mohan’s mouth twitched involuntarily. He really didn’t know how to respond to this innocent girl.
Did he marry her just so she could give him sons? He’d never thought that way.
He rubbed his tired forehead, his gaze falling on Luo Jiaojiao’s small and delicate figure.
Her fair skin, like the tender stem of a lotus root, was clearly the result of Luo Jiahui’s family’s careful nurturing. However, Leng Mohan knew that the Luo family’s affection for Luo Jiaojiao wasn’t genuine concern, but rather a desire to use her to climb higher.
Leng Mohan took a deep breath, deciding to stop thinking about these troublesome things. He just wanted to protect this innocent girl on behalf of Luo Shu and Lan Yi, preventing her from harm.
Leng Mohan didn’t expect Luo Jiaojiao to share the housework; his only wish was for her to stay home, causing no trouble.
Luo Jiaojiao misunderstood him, thinking he doubted her abilities, and quickly explained, “I really can learn to do housework; laundry and cooking are no problem.”
Leng Mohan smiled faintly, shaking his head gently. “I’m not doubting your abilities. In fact, I don’t expect you to do these things. My requirements are simple: you can live peacefully at home and stay out of trouble. As for having two sons for me, I’ll naturally keep that in mind, and I hope you’ll deliver on that promise.”
Luo Jiaojiao blinked, her heart filled with apprehension, softly asking, “If I give birth to girls, will we have to keep trying until we have a son?”
Her thoughts drifted to the family she had joined, where the low status of the wife, who had given birth to three daughters, was diminished, and she even suffered domestic violence from her husband.
“If I have two daughters, will you beat me?” Luo Jiaojiao was still uneasy and asked again.
Leng Mohan looked at Luo Jiaojiao, filled with helplessness. He really wanted to pry open her head and see what was inside.
“No,” he replied firmly. “Whether it’s a boy or a girl, they’re equally important to me. I’m an only child, and the gender of the child won’t affect my feelings. But one or two children will be enough; I’m worried I won’t be able to take care of more.” Leng Mohan assured her.
Hearing her concerns addressed, Luo Jiaojiao breathed a sigh of relief, looking at Leng Mohan, a determined light shining in her eyes. “I can take care of them too.”
Leng Mohan raised an eyebrow, looking her up and down, a playful smile curving his lips. “It’s already a miracle if you can take care of yourself, and you still want to take care of children? You’re a child yourself.”
