Chapter 55: Conviction
Luo Jiaojiao felt wronged. She watched as the newcomer immediately condemned Leng Mohan, her heart filled with bitterness.
This whole incident stemmed from her, but she didn’t want Leng Mohan to be punished because of it.
“This really isn’t Brother Leng’s fault!” Luo Jiaojiao’s voice was choked with sobs. “It was Zhou Lin who provoked me first! As soon as he came, he questioned my family background and said he wanted to marry me. I already told him I was married, but he wouldn’t stop harassing me.”
She clenched her fists, trying to steady her voice.
“He even used his uncle’s position as the second battalion commander to pressure me, saying that if I didn’t divorce my husband and marry him, I wouldn’t have a good life! Does being the second battalion commander mean he can do whatever he wants?”
Anger and resentment flashed in Luo Jiaojiao’s eyes. She knew that power shouldn’t be abused like this.
Despite her fear, Luo Jiaojiao firmly stood by Leng Mohan. She couldn’t let him be unjustly punished because of her. She would protect his innocence, even if her hands and feet were trembling with fear.
Leng Mohan held Luo Jiaojiao’s hand, feeling her trembling.
Unbidden, his heart softened, and he felt a touch of relief. This little woman was quite good, knowing to defend him.
Zhou Kang was surprised and somewhat regretful. He knew his nephew often used his position to annoy people, and he had turned a blind eye to his previous minor offenses. He never expected his nephew would target Leng Mohan’s wife and even use his position to threaten her.
This month’s martial arts competition was crucial; their military region relied on Leng Mohan to win and select outstanding talents. Therefore, Zhou Kang himself didn’t dare to easily offend Leng Mohan.
He had acted impulsively out of concern for Zhou Lin, completely forgetting the stakes. However, being scolded by a woman in such a way left him feeling quite uncomfortable.
“Where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” Zhou Kang said disdainfully, looking at Luo Jiaojiao with contempt. “Who knows if you deliberately seduced him? You don’t look like a decent woman, dressed so gaudily.”
He was filled with anger and disappointment towards Leng Mohan.
He had always assumed Leng Mohan would marry his daughter. After all, his daughter had a good family background and was a leading performer in the art troupe. In every aspect, she was far superior to this unknown girl.
But Leng Mohan chose to marry her instead of his beloved daughter, which he found unacceptable. He gritted his teeth, unable to swallow this anger.
In his eyes, Luo Jiaojiao must have used unscrupulous methods to force Leng Mohan to marry her.
Luo Jiaojiao never imagined he would turn the tables on her, making her tremble with rage.
She had only come down to pick up her clothes; she hadn’t done anything wrong. Why was he falsely accusing her? Was he covering for his nephew because he was the second battalion commander? Luo Jiaojiao looked at Zhou Kang, her eyes filled with anger and disappointment.
Her voice trembled with anger, each word squeezed out through gritted teeth.
Leng Mohan, seeing Luo Jiaojiao’s distress, gently rubbed her hair, his eyes filled with love and anger.
Leng Mohan walked up to Zhou Lin and slapped him across the face. Turning to Zhou Kang, he said, “Battalion Commander Zhou, was that slap loud enough? If not, I can hit harder.”
Luo Jiaojiao was startled by his action.
He turned to Zhou Kang, a sneer playing on his lips. “Second Battalion Commander, it’s not just Zhou Lin’s two lackeys who saw this; there are plenty of witnesses. Are you really going to cover for Zhou Lin? And that high hat you just put on me? I can’t wear it.”
His voice was cold and sarcastic, making Zhou Kang’s heart sink.
A cold sneer played on Leng Mohan’s lips. His eyes, filled with disdain and contempt, fixed on Zhou Kang as if to see through his soul.
“I wonder what methods you would use to deal with my wife if she refused to divorce me, to make her unable to live peacefully here. I’m sure you have insidious schemes and would stop at nothing to achieve your goals.”
His voice carried a chill, each word seeming to freeze into ice.
“It seems I must also submit an application to leave here with my wife. With someone like you around, I dare not stay any longer. I worry that when I go out on missions, I won’t know if my wife will still be here when I return.” His voice rose unconsciously, filled with anger and determination.
Leng Mohan’s gaze became even sharper, like a blade, making people dare not look directly at him. He gritted his teeth, his fists clenched, as if suppressing his anger.
“This is outrageous! Leng Mohan, how can you say such things?” Ou Cheng and Liang Xin were astonished. They hadn’t expected to witness this when they came to find Wang Li, and they glared at Leng Mohan.
“I never knew the second battalion commander’s influence reached this far! Your nephew dares to target the wife of my subordinate, Leng Mohan. Is there no law and order? I’ll go to the superior and ask how much power the second battalion commander has, allowing the family members of my subordinates to be harassed here. Is the military region your family’s private property?”
Ou Cheng turned to Zhou Kang, with whom he had always been at odds, and angrily questioned him.
“Your nephew is shameless, bullying a married military family member and threatening her with divorce. Not only do you not discipline him, but you also turn the tables and say she seduced him. If your nephew were as good as you say, how could he be easily seduced? He is clearly unscrupulous! Like father, like son!”
Liang Xin couldn’t stand it anymore. He looked at Zhou Kang sarcastically, filled with indignation. They had been pushed too far.
“Aren’t you going to find someone to judge this? Go ahead. Zhou Kang, if you don’t give us an explanation, our battalion won’t let this go.” Ou Cheng was already worried about Leng Mohan’s situation. This incident could not affect the upcoming competition.
“Commander, I think I shouldn’t represent our military region in this competition. After all, the second battalion commander said I don’t abide by military regulations and have no respect for the law. I’m afraid my presence would disgrace our military region.”
Though Leng Mohan spoke to Ou Cheng, his eyes were fixed on Zhou Kang.
Indeed, after Leng Mohan’s words, Ou Cheng and Liang Xin looked at Zhou Kang as if they wanted to beat him up.
