The Male Lead’s Substitute Wife
The Male Lead’s Substitute Wife Chapter 30 part 1

Su Yaya never expected to see Shen Xiuqi the moment she opened the door. Her heart pounded, startled. He sat there expressionless, giving her a cold look.

“President Shen, why are you here?” Su Yaya’s voice was stiff. She remembered what Yan Junyi had said earlier and wasn’t sure how much, if any, Shen Xiuqi had overheard. A guilty feeling crept over her.

Even though she hadn’t agreed to Yan Junyi’s request, the things he’d said about Shen Xiuqi were offensive. Knowing Shen Xiuqi’s temper, if he found out that Yan Junyi had spoken poorly of him, it would be disastrous for Yan Junyi—and there was no way Su Yaya, who had been approached by Yan Junyi, would escape the fallout either.

It was scarier the more she thought about it!

Su Yaya’s heart was trembling. Hopefully, Shen Xiuqi didn’t know what Yan Junyi had said to her.

Shen Xiuqi looked up and observed her reaction. Seeing her standing there, stunned, it was clear she hadn’t expected him.

After leaving earlier, Shen Xiuqi had been on his way to the office when a thought struck him, prompting him to tell Uncle Zhong to turn the car around.

She was only filming an ad, after all. Wasn’t it just a kiss for work? Plenty of actors had to film even more intimate scenes for movies and TV dramas! If he left in anger, it would just make him look petty. It was no big deal—she was doing her job. Why should he get upset? He told himself to get over it and decided to come back.

He imagined Su Yaya would be thrilled to see him, practically leaping into his arms like an affectionate kitten. The thought cheered him up, and he returned with a lighter heart.

But now, seeing the shock rather than joy on Su Yaya’s face, it was obvious this wasn’t going as he’d anticipated. Usually, she’d be delighted and eager to please him.

Instead, her stunned expression was nothing like he’d expected. He had imagined she’d be ecstatic to see him, acting as sweet and charming as usual. But reality wasn’t aligning with his expectations. His mild irritation only grew, and with a frosty look, he gestured for her to come closer. “Come here. Why are you standing so far away? I won’t eat you!”

But she was worried he might!

Su Yaya thought that to herself but dared not defy him. She quickly adjusted her expression, trying to appear more natural. Whatever her concerns, now was the time to charm him and put him in a good mood—nothing could go wrong if she managed that.

With her mind made up, she approached him with a bright smile, transforming into a cheerful little bird. She threw herself onto him, her hands clasping his arm, pressing herself close as she beamed up at him. “President Shen, why are you here? Did you come just to see me? When did you arrive? I didn’t even notice! Have you been waiting long? Oh my, I’m so happy—I don’t even know what to say!”

The words spilled out in a nervous stream as she tried to hide her unease, hoping her cheerful chatter would mask her true feelings.

As she hugged him, her sweet scent drifted to him, and he couldn’t look away from her bright smile. Her eyes sparkled like diamonds, lighting up her face. So, she was surprised after all—her reaction was undeniable.

“I’ve been here for a little while,” Shen Xiuqi replied, stroking her hair gently, his mood clearly lifted. The indifference in his expression softened, replaced by a warmth she hadn’t seen before.

Su Yaya could feel his shift in attitude. This was good—she was right to try pleasing him. He wasn’t hard to win over, after all; she’d just put her acting skills to their best use. With a small, triumphant smile, she finally felt her nerves begin to settle.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” Su Yaya asked, continuing to act cute.

Shen Xiuqi stroked her hair again and replied, “Waiting here for you works just the same.”

Su Yaya blinked, a thought forming in her mind. She leaned in, kissed him, and smiled sweetly. “President Shen, you’re the best.”

A faint smile touched Shen Xiuqi’s lips. Though he didn’t fully show it, he was genuinely pleased. In a casual tone, he asked, “Is filming ads fun?”

Su Yaya hesitated, sensing a hint of danger in his question. No matter if she said yes or no, either answer might lead to trouble. So, instead of responding directly, she chose her words carefully. “It’s not really about having fun or not. I’m just doing it for work.”

After all, she filmed ads to earn a living. Work meant income, and income meant freedom to pursue what she wanted. It was a simple, logical reason!
