Chapter 26 Killing a Big Black Bear
Lin Yuexi dug and dug, for several hours, before she finally dug up all the Gastrodia elata. Then she took out a plastic bag from her space and put the Gastrodia elata in. She lifted it and felt that it weighed about 20 pounds.
Then she put the Gastrodia elata in her backpack, put the herbs she had dug up on top, and covered them with a blue cotton cloth. She thought, tomorrow she would dig up some more from her space and go to the county’s medicinal herb company to sell it. This way, the supplies she took out of her space would have a source. She was about to put the backpack into her space and take it out again when she left the mountain. Suddenly, she heard a faint “rustling” sound not far away. Lin Yuexi stopped in her tracks, alert, and scanned her surroundings with sharp eyes.
She saw a gray hare dart out of the grass. It was extremely fast and disappeared into the depths of the forest in an instant. Lin Yuexi smiled slightly. Unexpectedly, there was still a hare. She had to catch it and give it to her two children for an extra meal tonight. So she didn’t rush down the mountain, but went towards the direction where the hare had run. Unexpectedly, after entering the depths of the pine forest, the light dimmed, and the surroundings became eerily quiet. Lin Yuexi was carefully searching when she suddenly heard a low growl. The sound was deep and powerful, as if it came from the depths of the earth. Her heart tightened, and she knew that she might have encountered a wild beast.
Sure enough, a huge black bear slowly emerged from behind a tree. It stood up, over two meters tall, its eyes fierce as it stared at Lin Yuexi. There really was a bear! Lin Yuexi was stunned! After a while, she put down her backpack, took out a sharp dagger from her space, and was about to go forward.
“Don’t move…” A deep male voice came. Hearing the voice, Lin Yuexi subconsciously stopped in her tracks. She saw a burly man slowly emerge from the bushes nearby. He was holding a crude hunting fork and staring at the black bear with determination. This man was someone the original owner knew. He was Zhao Gang from the east end of the village. He was a prominent figure in Qinghe Village. He had returned from the army and was very strong. It was said that the army wanted to arrange a job for him, but he refused, saying that he wanted to return to his hometown to take care of his blind mother.
So Zhao Gang came back. He was given all the heavy work in the team. He could do the work of several people, earning a lot of work points. He often went into the mountains to hunt for some wild game to supplement his livelihood, and his family lived a good life. But he had one strange habit. He was over thirty years old and still single. It wasn’t that he couldn’t find a wife, but he didn’t like ordinary girls, and girls from the city didn’t like his rural hukou. This went on and on, and he was delayed.
The original owner rarely interacted with him and didn’t have a good impression of him. Unexpectedly, she met him on the mountain today. At this moment, Zhao Gang was trying to get to the side of the black bear, looking for a weakness, when he suddenly rushed towards the bear and stabbed it in the abdomen with his hunting fork. The black bear was enraged and swung its paw, hitting him hard.
Zhao Gang couldn’t dodge in time and was hit in the shoulder by the bear’s paw. He flew backwards and fell heavily to the ground, his hunting fork falling out of his hand. The black bear didn’t give Zhao Gang a chance to catch his breath. It pounced on him again. Seeing this, Lin Yuexi knew she couldn’t wait any longer. If she waited any longer, Zhao Gang would be dead.
She moved in a flash, like a ghost, and charged towards the black bear. The dagger in her hand flashed coldly. She aimed at the black bear’s back and stabbed it hard. The black bear roared in pain and turned to pounce on Lin Yuexi.
Lin Yuexi dodged the black bear’s attack nimbly. She used her speed and agility to constantly inflict wounds on the black bear. Zhao Gang also struggled to get up, picked up a stone, and threw it at the black bear’s eyes. The black bear was hit in the eye and became even more frantic, wildly swinging its paws. Lin Yuexi seized the opportunity, rolled over to the side of the black bear, and stabbed the dagger into its body again. After a fierce fight, the black bear finally collapsed to the ground with a thud.
Seeing this, Zhao Gang breathed a sigh of relief, his eyes filled with suspicion and admiration. Lin Yuexi knew that he was suspicious of where she learned her skills. Lin Yuexi repeated the story she told at the village office, and Zhao Gang believed her. He looked at Lin Yuexi gratefully, “Third wife of the Lu family, thank you for saving me. I wanted to go up the mountain to hunt a hare or something today to give my mother some nourishment. I didn’t expect to encounter this black bear. Luckily, I met you.
Otherwise, I wouldn’t be alive…” Lin Yuexi smiled slightly, “Brother Zhao, you were trying to save me, so you don’t need to thank me.” Then she looked at Zhao Gang’s shoulder, “Your injury is serious. I know a little bit about medicine. Let me bandage it for you.” After saying that, Lin Yuexi took out some herbs she had just collected from her backpack and crushed them. Then she used her mind to take out a bottle of spiritual spring water and a bottle of Yunnan Baiyao from her space, pretending to take them out of her backpack. She mixed the Yunnan Baiyao with the crushed herbs and then tore open the clothes on Zhao Gang’s shoulder that had been scratched by the bear to check the wound.
The wound was bloody and still bleeding. The surrounding skin was already red and swollen. Lin Yuexi frowned, carefully cleaned the wound with the spiritual spring water to remove dirt and blood, then evenly applied the crushed herbs to the wound. As soon as the herbs touched the wound, the bleeding stopped, and Zhao Gang felt a coolness, and the pain seemed to lessen. Lin Yuexi tore a piece of the blue cotton cloth covering the backpack and bandaged Zhao Gang’s wound.
As she bandaged it, she said, “Brother Zhao, the wound is temporarily bandaged, but you still have to be careful these next few days. Don’t let the wound get wet, and don’t do any heavy work, otherwise it will easily get infected.” Looking at Lin Yuexi’s focused expression, Zhao Gang was filled with gratitude. He scratched his head and said, “Third wife of the Lu family, I think your wound-dressing skills are better than those of regular army doctors. They’re much better than the barefoot doctors in our village. You saved my life.
If you want to go to the hospital to work, I can talk to a comrade of mine and let you work at the county hospital.” Lin Yuexi smiled and said, “Brother Zhao, I just know a little bit about medicine. Don’t be so polite. We’re all from the same village. It’s only natural to help each other. Besides, you were also in danger trying to save me. It’s only right that I help you. As for going to the county hospital, I don’t want to go for now…” She was joking. It wasn’t appropriate for her to go to the county hospital now.
She needed to have a place to stay in the county and then divorce this scumbag who had been gone for five years before she went. But she didn’t know when he would come back. She needed to prepare early! “Third wife, it’s a pity that you have such medical skills. That Lu San is really something. He married such a good wife, but he’s not getting a divorce or coming back…” Zhao Gang sighed. Lin Yuexi smiled wryly and didn’t respond.
After she packed up her things, Zhao Gang looked at the black bear on the ground and said, “This bear is worth a lot of money. According to the rules of our village, the hunted animals have to be split evenly. The bear gall and bear paws are good things. They can be sold for a lot of money in the county. And the bear meat is enough for both of our families to eat for a while.”
