Chapter 7: Traveling through time and space to become a mother of two children
“Ugh… my head hurts so much, am I still alive?” Lin Yuexi slowly regained consciousness, her head felt like a thousand needles were piercing it, the pain made her gasp. As her vision gradually cleared, the scene that appeared before her was the one she had repeatedly seen in her dreams. “Damn it! Could it be that I really crossed over?” Lin Yuexi was full of astonishment, she couldn’t help but swear. Before she could digest this bizarre situation, her gaze swept across the two children opposite her, their faces full of terror, shrinking back as they stared at her, making her even more confused.
What was going on with these two little devils? Why were they so afraid of her? Lin Yuexi was full of doubts, before she could think further. Suddenly, a wave of unfamiliar memories flooded her mind. After digesting this information, she realized that she had crossed over to a parallel world in China. It was September 18, 1974, and the body she was occupying now belonged to Lin Yuexi, the wife of Lu Cheng, the third son of the Lu family in Qinghe Village. However, this marriage was not a matter of mutual affection.
Five years ago, the original Lin Yuexi went to the river to wash clothes, she was extremely unlucky and fell into the water. Coincidentally, Lu Cheng, who had just returned home from the army for a family visit, passed by. Seeing the emergency, Lu Cheng knew he had to save her, regardless of gender differences, he didn’t even think twice before diving into the river to save her. The person was safe and sound on the shore, but who would have thought that the original Lin Yuexi’s parents would have a crooked idea and blackmail the Lu family.
They insisted that Lu Cheng had held and hugged her when he saved her, ruining their daughter’s chastity, and they demanded 200 yuan in bride price, forcing Lu Cheng to marry their daughter.
The original Lin Yuexi was reluctant, she had already fallen in love with Li Mingyuan, the village’s educated youth, and they had genuine feelings for each other. Li Mingyuan also patted his chest and promised that as soon as he got his transfer order back to the city, he would immediately take her back to the city to live together and get married. But the original Lin Yuexi’s parents didn’t care about any of that, in their eyes, Lu Cheng was a golden son-in-law that they couldn’t find even with a lantern. Lu Cheng’s monthly allowance in the army was 30 yuan, and the three large tile houses of the Lu family were built with Lu Cheng’s allowance.
This “good fortune” that fell from the sky, how could they easily let it go? Besides, the original Lin Yuexi was not Li Sanru’s biological daughter, raising her was already considered a kindness in their eyes. Whether she wanted to marry or not was irrelevant, as long as they could extort 200 yuan in bride price from the Lu family, getting a wife for their son was the top priority. On Lu Cheng’s side, he didn’t have much resistance to the Lu family’s request for him to marry Lin Yuexi. It was just marrying a wife, he would have to marry sooner or later, and Lin Yuexi looked decent, marrying her wouldn’t be a loss.
Moreover, the army kept urging him to submit a marriage report, saying that getting married would increase his allowance, he hadn’t found anyone suitable, now this was convenient, he didn’t have to be picky anymore. But the other Lu family members were very unwilling. Lu Zhengdong and Liu Cuifang had four sons and two daughters.
The eldest was a daughter, Lu Shufang, who had already married and started a family; the eldest son, Lu Jianmin, had married Li Xiuyin from the neighboring village, and their son Lu Wei was already three years old; the second son, Lu Jianguo, and Wang Xiujuan were married, and their daughter Lu Xiaomei was only a year old; the third son, Lu Cheng, was the most promising, he had joined the army after graduating from high school, and had been smooth sailing all the way, it was said that he would be promoted to a regimental-level cadre in the future; the fourth son, Lu Weiqing, was in high school, and the youngest daughter, Lu Jingyi, was in junior high school.
Lu Zhengdong and Liu Cuifang were so angry that their lungs were about to explode when they saw their most promising son being entangled by Lin Yuexi, the most despised person in the village. Moreover, Lin Fugui didn’t care about Lin Yuexi, the daughter of his previous wife, and let her stepmother, Li Sanru, beat and abuse her, turning a good girl into a skin and bones, who knows if she had any illnesses? As for the incident of falling into the water that day, who knows if it was an accident or an attempt to commit suicide.
They were one hundred percent unwilling to let Lu Cheng marry such a girl. But if they didn’t agree, Lin Fugui and Li Sanru would really report it to Lu Cheng’s army, then Lu Cheng’s future would be ruined. Although the couple were very reluctant, seeing Lu Cheng nod, they could only reluctantly agree, they chose a nearby auspicious day and brought the original Lin Yuexi into the house.
Lu Cheng also submitted a marriage application to the army, and the army gave him a month of leave. In fact, after the marriage, Lu Cheng, out of sympathy for the original Lin Yuexi’s experience in the Lin family, was initially quite good to her. But who would have thought that Lin Yuexi would not know her place, during the month Lu Cheng was home, she secretly went to meet Li Mingyuan, and was caught by Lu Cheng. Lu Cheng was furious at the time, he beat Li Mingyuan until his nose was bruised and his face was swollen, and also warned him not to come near Lin Yuexi again.
After this incident, Lu Cheng’s heart turned cold towards this forced wife, and he returned to the army soon after, and didn’t even go home for five years. As for the original Lin Yuexi, Lu Cheng left, and she found out that she was pregnant. She wanted to run away, but she was pregnant and couldn’t run away, besides, in this era, without an introduction letter, you couldn’t go anywhere. So she had to settle down and give birth, when she was full term, she gave birth to a pair of twins with the help of her father-in-law and mother-in-law.
But she didn’t care about these two children, she hated them for dragging her down, and she didn’t take care of them much. At first, Liu Cuifang couldn’t bear to see it, she helped take care of them, and raised the two children to the age of two. But later, some crazy rumors spread, saying that the two children were not her third son Lu Cheng’s, so she didn’t take care of the three of them much.
The other Lu family members didn’t have much affection for the original Lin Yuexi either, and Lu Cheng hadn’t come back for five years, so the Lu family ignored the three of them, as long as they didn’t starve to death. The original Lin Yuexi had been sick for a few days and couldn’t go to work, the meals for the past few days were delivered by her mother-in-law, Liu Cuifang, through her eldest sister-in-law, Li Xiuyin. But who would have thought that Li Xiuyin secretly kept their meals and ate them.
The original Lin Yuexi was so hungry that her eyes were blurry, she used all her remaining strength on the two children, blaming them for dragging her down, and beat them up. But who would have thought that after beating the children, she fell onto the straw bed and fell asleep. When she opened her eyes again, the original Lin Yuexi’s soul had been replaced by the Lin Yuexi from the 22nd century.
Lin Yuexi stood there dumbfounded, it took her a while to come to her senses, she accepted the fact that she had crossed over with a sense of helplessness. Looking at the two thin and timid children in front of her, a pang of sadness welled up in her heart, she raised her hand and rubbed her temples, thinking to herself: Since I’ve taken over this body, I can’t let the children suffer anymore. She struggled to get up, her head was still a little dizzy, but she gritted her teeth and insisted on going to the wooden basin in the corner to get some water to wash the children’s faces.
The two little ones shrank back in fear, the boy instinctively shielded his sister behind him. Seeing this, Lin Yuexi’s heart ached, she said softly, “Don’t be afraid, mother won’t hit you anymore.
” As soon as the words left her mouth, even she herself was startled, such a gentle tone, it was rare for her in the past. The girl poked her head out and asked timidly, “Mother, will you really not hit us anymore?”
