Chapter 48
Zheng Yunsheng is indeed afraid of snakes.
After all, he grew up in the city with a silver spoon in his mouth and only came to the countryside when he was eighteen.
Although I have been living in the countryside for more than three years and have had the opportunity to see one or two snakes, I still can’t help feeling fear for this eerie-looking species.
However, even though he was scared, Zheng Yunsheng still ran to Gu Qijiao very quickly after seeing the snake at the entrance of the cave.
At that moment, his worry about Gu Qijiao had far outweighed his fear.
Only after kicking the snake away did Zheng Yunsheng calm down and then he began to feel scared.
He just kicked that thing away, but it was a snake!
Zheng Yunsheng thought to himself that even a grown man like him was so frightened that his heartbeat quickened. Wouldn’t Gu Qijiao be even more frightened?
So he hugged Gu Qijiao and comforted her.
Originally, this should have been a good show of a hero saving a beauty, but Zheng Yunsheng was a little confused. He felt that there was a hint of anger in the way Gu Qijiao looked at him.
“A good meal of meat was ruined by you.” Gu Qijiao solved the doubts in Zheng Yunsheng’s mind.
She pushed Zheng Yunsheng away, suppressed the emotions that suddenly surged in her heart, then turned around and went back into the cave.
When Gu Qijiao saw the steamed bun that she had taken a few bites of before, she suddenly felt that it no longer tasted good.
Zheng Yunsheng stood at the entrance of the cave for a long time. At first, he really didn’t understand what Gu Qijiao meant.
When he realized that the meat Gu Qijiao was talking about was the snake that was half the size of his wrist, he couldn’t help but twitch his lips.
In his previous life, he only knew that Gu Qijiao was very aggressive, but he didn’t expect that this little woman could be so tough.
The rain lasted for another half an hour.
When the rain stopped and the two walked out again, it was already dark outside.
In rainy weather, night always comes earlier than sunny day.
The two did not dare to delay any longer. Even though the road was slippery, they had to slide along quickly.
They didn’t expect it to rain, nor were they used to walking at night. They didn’t bring torches, and they would not be able to get out of the forest before night fell completely.
Otherwise it will be troublesome.
Although this forest is close to human settlements and there are few wild animals, it is still possible to encounter wild boars that are not afraid of humans and occasionally dig up food in the ground.
Fortunately, after Gu Qijiao finished eating the steamed buns in the cave, she pulled some vines from the rocks and tied them to the soles of her shoes, making it much less slippery when walking.
The two of them then walked a little faster.
Zheng Yunsheng was still worried about Gu Qijiao. He walked in front on both the uphill and downhill routes, and walked behind Gu Qijiao on the uphill routes.
Fortunately, Gu Qijiao is now very careful and walks steadily step by step, and no accidents have occurred along the way.
However, despite their best efforts, they still couldn’t get home before it got completely dark.
The couple’s shoes were soaked, but luckily it was summer and they didn’t feel too cold.
But it’s not far away, just one hill away and then crossing a flat forest, and then you’ll be home.
The forest was pitch black.
Zheng Yunsheng could only hold Gu Qijiao’s hand and continue moving forward with her in the darkness.
Just when they thought they would be able to grope their way through the darkness, a few flickering lights suddenly appeared on the top of a mountain in the distance.
It looks like a torch.
The two of them couldn’t help but feel happy, as they had met someone walking at night and could ask them for a light.
They quickened their pace and continued to move forward.
When they reached halfway up the mountain, they finally met the people with torches.
After seeing the person holding the torch clearly, Gu Qijiao was shocked. She looked at Gu Dagan and Xie Jinxiang who were holding the torches in confusion:
“Dad, Mom, why are you here?”
“What if you don’t come? It’s dark and the roads in this forest are dangerous. What if something happens to you?” Gu Dagan said in a fierce tone.
But when he saw that Gu Qijiao was fine, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
It turned out that the sky was getting dark. Xie Zhenbei was afraid that Zheng Yunsheng and Gu Qijiao had not returned home yet, so when it was almost dark, he went to their yard to take a look.
When he confirmed that the young couple had not returned home, Xie Zhenbei quickly notified the old couple of the Gu family, because Xie Zhenbei knew that family members of the Corps were not allowed to stay overnight when visiting.
Some city dwellers who go to the Corps to visit their relatives have to go to town and find a hotel to stay in at night.
Gu Dagan and Xie Jinxiang didn’t know that the young couple had gone to the Corps.
As soon as they received the news, they panicked and immediately took their hats, lit torches and went out to pick up Zheng Yunsheng and Gu Qijiao.
Xie Zhenbei took care of Da Gan and Xie Jinxiang, who were old and worried that they might get into trouble on the road, so he also carried a torch and followed them out.
Fortunately, they met Zheng Yunsheng and Gu Qijiao as soon as they passed through the grove and climbed over a hill.
After the five people got together, they lit torches and walked back together.
Looking at the straw sandals with toes exposed on Gu Dagan and Xie Jinxiang’s feet, Gu Qijiao felt uncomfortable. They wore them like that deliberately to prevent slipping.
Gu Dagan had a daughter in his old age, and Xie Jinxiang is not young either. The combined age of the couple is over a hundred years old, yet they still have to come out to pick her up late at night.
She must be fully prepared for anything she does in the future.
We can’t add more trouble to our parents.
With torches, the road became much easier to walk on, and the group soon reached the village entrance.
Gu Dagan handed the torch in his hand to Zheng Yunsheng and said, “You must be tired after the journey. We will not follow you home. Let’s go back and have a meal and go to bed early.”
“Okay, Dad and Mom, thank you for your hard work. Go back and get some rest.” Zheng Yunsheng took the torch from Gu Dagan and turned around to apologize to Xie Zhenbei:
“Captain, thank you so much for today!”
Xie Zhenbei didn’t say anything, just waved his hand and turned away.
Because Xie Zhenbei was present, Zheng Yunsheng was ultimately unable to retrieve the small piece of wood that he had hidden in the bushes.
The couple carried torches, waded through the muddy water, and walked towards home.
When they arrived at the yard, Zheng Yunsheng and Gu Qijiao first went into the house to change their clothes, and then Zheng Yunsheng hurried to the kitchen to light a fire and boil water.
Gu Qijiao was not idle either. There was some porridge left over from lunch, and she planned to heat it up and drink it in the evening.
Looking at the light porridge, Gu Qijiao thought of her big snake again and suddenly felt it was boring.
Zheng Yunsheng originally wanted Gu Qijiao to take a rest and let him boil water and cook by himself, but Gu Qijiao said that she wanted to finish early and go to bed, so Gu Qijiao let her do as she pleased.
One of the couple was responsible for making the fire, while the other was responsible for heating the porridge and cooking.
Dinner was quickly finished.
After finishing the meal, Zheng Yunsheng took the bowls into the kitchen and looked at the boiling water in the pot. Zheng Yunsheng quickly twisted the bucket and brought a bucket of hot water into the house. He shouted to Gu Qijiao:
