Chapter 10: You Haven’t Been This Happy In a Long Time.
Jiang Yan spent eight hours in the kitchen, finally making ten exquisite and beautiful desserts.
She asked a few servants to help her carry the desserts to the old master’s residence.
Standing at the gate, Jiang Yan smiled at the security guard and said, “Please let my grandfather know that Jiang Yan is here to see him.”
“It’s late, the old master is resting and doesn’t see anyone. If the young mistress wants to see the old master, please come early tomorrow.” The security guard gestured for her to leave.
Jiang Yan wasn’t surprised to be stopped by the security guard.
“Then please give these to Grandpa.” Jiang Yan handed the food box to the security guard.
The security guard didn’t take it, but shook his head: “The old master’s food is handled by someone, there’s no need for the young mistress to bother.”
Jiang Yan, having been turned away, showed a clear look of disappointment: “Okay.”
Inside the house, the old master was wearing reading glasses and reading a book. He had already known that Jiang Yan had been busy in the kitchen all day.
He had instructed the security guard to stop her from entering.
He wanted to see what Jiang Yan’s reaction would be after a day of hard work, only to be unable to see him.
The next day, Jiang Yan got up early.
After yesterday’s wasted effort, she was naturally unhappy.
However, she wouldn’t give up just because she was rejected once.
That wasn’t her style.
Today, she made ten desserts again.
She took the desserts to the old master’s residence and, unsurprisingly, was refused again.
For nine consecutive days, Jiang Yan got up early every day to make desserts and then went to see the old master.
Finally, on the tenth day, the old master, leaning on his cane, personally waited for Jiang Yan at the gate.
“Grandpa…” Jiang Yan saw the kind smile on the old master’s aged face, knowing that her efforts had finally moved him.
“Come here.” The old master beckoned to Jiang Yan.
Jiang Yan immediately went forward and helped the old master.
After she helped the old master into the house, the servants placed the food boxes on the table one by one.
“Grandpa, I asked Butler Du, and he said you like sweets, so I made some for you. These are all low-sugar, you can try a little.” Jiang Yan smiled and offered the old master a piece of perilla cake.
The old master took the cake and scooped a small spoonful into his mouth.
Jiang Yan’s eyes sparkled, and she looked at him expectantly: “How is it? Is it delicious?”
The old master had only intended to give Jiang Yan some face and take a bite, given her hard work.
Unexpectedly, it was surprisingly delicious.
“Delicious.” The old master nodded, scooping up a large spoonful.
Seeing the old master finish the spoonful and wanting more, Jiang Yan immediately took the cake from his hand.
“Why are you taking my cake?” The old master frowned, very unhappy.
Jiang Yan shook her head and said, “Grandpa, even though this is low-sugar, you can’t eat too much. You’ve already had two bites, that’s enough.”
“You made all these for me to eat, didn’t you?” The old master reached out to grab the cake back, but Jiang Yan stepped back and avoided him.
Jiang Yan put the cake on the table and said seriously, “I made so many, firstly because it was the first time I made food for you, I didn’t know which kind you liked, I wanted you to choose one or two of your favorites.
Secondly, it’s for good luck, ten is a perfect number.”
The reason Jiang Yan married into the Li family was because the old master had someone calculate Li Yancheng’s birth chart, and it was compatible with hers, signifying good fortune.
It showed that he believed in these intangible but beautiful things.
The idea of ten being a perfect number was something Jiang Yan had planned from the beginning.
The old master clearly appreciated this, a smile appearing on his old face: “A perfect ten, indeed.”
“Then, after all your hard work, wouldn’t it be a waste if I didn’t try them all?” The old master looked at the other desserts, picked up a piece of osmanthus cake and put it in his mouth.
“If you really thought it was a waste of my hard work, you wouldn’t have eaten them until today.” Jiang Yan pretended to be angry, cute and playful.
“Today is the tenth day, you made ten kinds of desserts, and repeated it ten times, double the perfect ten.” The old master said with a smile, “How perfect.”
“Yes, yes, Grandpa, you’re right.” Jiang Yan smiled gently. Seeing the old master wanting to eat more, she quickly stood in front of him.
Turning her head, Jiang Yan said to Atian beside her, “Please put these away, Grandpa can’t eat anymore.”
“Don’t put them away.” The old master said with a stern face, “I haven’t tried them all yet.”
“Grandpa, you can’t eat anymore today.” Jiang Yan shook her head, speaking very seriously.
“Then let me at least try half.” The old master said.
“No.” Jiang Yan shook her head, “At most, one more kind.”
“Two!” The old master raised his aged finger, tremblingly making a gesture of two.
Jiang Yan looked troubled, finally reluctantly nodding: “Okay, then you choose two, but you can only try one bite of each.”
Having received Jiang Yan’s agreement, the old master was very happy and immediately started choosing carefully.
Jiang Yan also chatted with the old master for a while.
When she left, the old master personally saw her off.
Jiang Yan smiled and said, “Grandpa, I’ll bring you food tomorrow, but only one kind.”
“Okay, then I want sesame cake tomorrow.” The old master nodded happily.
After Jiang Yan left, Atian beside him also smiled: “You haven’t been this happy in a long time.”
The old master slightly tilted his head and sighed at the sky: “Yeah.”
