Chapter 14: This Is a Good Thing
“This way, the public will learn more about you both—there will be gains, but also losses.”
Chen Hao didn’t say more than that, but Ruonan and Jiewen understood the situation clearly, as if a mirror had reflected it in their minds.
Becoming the spokespersons for the convenience store meant publicly acknowledging their relationship with Chen Hao. It would bring them more attention and support, but also possibly draw hostility from some people.
When they chose to follow Chen Hao in the first place, they had already anticipated this outcome.
Every choice comes with pros and cons—the key is weighing which side matters more.
As things stood, the benefits clearly outweighed the risks. After all, Chen Hao had already assigned them the task of promoting the convenience store.
Noticing that it was getting late and that the girls’ arms were sore from the massage work,
Chen Hao casually waved his hand to dismiss them and said,
“That’s enough for today. Go back and get some rest. Tomorrow, come find me at Jiashang Human Resources.”
“Before you go, make sure to get some wine from A-Liang at the bar.”
This time, Jiewen didn’t object. She apologized to Ruonan, then quietly left Chen Hao’s office.
Ruonan, a little disappointed that nothing beyond friendship had happened that night—even though Chen Hao had promised never to act against her will—still regretted not even getting the chance to voice her feelings.
But she reassured herself inwardly: the opportunity would come. She just had to wait and see.
They then walked out of the office together and found A-Liang at the bar. He chatted with them a bit about Chen Hao.
As a loyal employee to the new boss, A-Liang naturally saw it as his duty to understand his superior’s preferences—especially anything related to the convenience store. He also shared a surprising tidbit: members of the Hongxing group would be getting a 50% discount.
Hearing this, Ruonan and Jiewen were left speechless. Such generosity was rare—it truly seemed that Chen Hao was the type to spend lavishly.
Ruonan, concerned, clung to Jiewen and said,
“Our boss is being too extravagant. Tomorrow, let’s try to talk some sense into him!”
Jiewen nodded in agreement.
A-Liang then respectfully handed over two bottles of Lafite red wine, packed by Brother Hao himself, and warmly addressed them both as sister-in-law.
Jiewen blushed slightly at the title but didn’t object and accepted the wine. Ruonan, on the other hand, laughed and praised A-Liang for his tact and good judgment.
“You’re a clever one, aren’t you?” she teased.
A-Liang bowed and grinned, “Take care, dear sisters-in-law.”
Other younger gang members echoed the term loudly.
Surrounded by cries of “Sister-in-law!”, the two women felt like they were walking on clouds, their steps light as if they were floating fairies.
As they walked off carrying their bottles of Lafite, A-Liang smiled in satisfaction.
He had deliberately spread word about this “couple” to help promote Chen Hao’s convenience store—as the boss’s women, it was only natural for the brothers to refer to them as “sister-in-law.”
And who better to help manage the boss’s affairs than the boss’s own women? No one wanted to see the boss’s money being wasted for no reason.
As they left the bar, Jiewen whispered quietly:
“Is this really okay? What if the boss gets mad?”
Ruonan rolled her eyes. “They were calling us ‘sister-in-law’ back then—why didn’t you stop them?”
How could Jiewen not want to stop it? Ruonan clearly knew her intentions; the two shared a silent understanding.
Ruonan gently patted Jiewen’s firm butt, making her yelp in surprise.
“Hey! What are you doing? Don’t joke around like that here!”
Ruonan smiled with a lingering thought, thinking to herself how her sister’s figure really wasn’t bad—almost comparable to her own.
She continued with a grin:
“Alright, I know you’re into the boss too. Stop pretending.”
“No matter how we compete, we’re still sisters. Better to keep the goodies in the family than hand them over to outsiders.”
“Let’s just think about what to do tomorrow—how we can get the boss to notice us!”
Upon hearing Ruonan’s words, the cheerful smile on Jiewen’s face suddenly turned into a troubled frown.
Late at night, when everything was quiet, Chen Hao returned home. A system notification rang in his ears:
[Ding. Today’s income: HKD 1.3745 million from a tenfold bonus on earnings of HKD 137,450. The amount has been automatically deposited into your bank account.]
[Assets: Increased from HKD 2.929 million to HKD 16.674 million.]
Hearing the system prompt, Chen Hao was stunned.
He had anticipated a good income today, but he didn’t expect it to be this massive.
After some thought, he realized it made sense: each time the convenience store restocked, it cost about HKD 100,000. But since the people from Hung Hing were selling everything at 50% off, it was essentially generating HKD 50,000 in turnover each time.
With four major restocks, the accumulated return wasn’t surprising.
Normally, a convenience store with HKD 5,000 in daily turnover would already be doing well.
But today’s strong sales were driven by the half-price promotion—and ironically, because of the troublemakers Siu-Kwan and Bobby. Their attempts to sabotage actually helped Chen Hao make more money.
This made Chen Hao wonder—what kind of reaction would Siu-Kwan and Bobby have when they realized not only had they failed to ruin him, but actually helped him get richer?
He could already picture their furious faces in his mind.
Western District.
Early in the morning, Bucky was still asleep when he was awoken by frantic knocking and crying at the door.
Half-asleep, he opened the door to see his old flame Cuilian, who was now crying her heart out.
“Brother Bucky, you… you’ve got to help my little brother!” she sobbed.
“He was badly beaten and is now in the hospital, critically injured.”
“If anything happens to him, I don’t want to live anymore…”
Her voice choked as she struggled to speak clearly, her thoughts filled with the image of her brother Fei Biu lying broken in a hospital bed.
Bucky let out a deep sigh. He knew Fei Biu all too well.
That guy always relied on Bucky’s relationship with Cuilian and ran wild in the Western District under Bucky’s name, completely tarnishing Hung Hing’s reputation.
Many tolerated him out of respect for Bucky, but everyone knew that guy had nearly gotten himself killed more than once.
Fei Biu had a bit of cunning too—he knew his name carried no weight outside the Western District, so he only dared act up on home turf.
Whoever beat him up this time may have been doing a public service.
But no matter what, Fei Biu was still Cuilian’s little brother.
Years ago, Cuilian had been the light of Bucky’s life—the woman who made him feel like a real man.
Unfortunately, fate was cruel. Her father looked down on Bucky’s poverty and forced her to marry a rich old man instead.
After that old man died, she got back together with Bucky—but the relationship didn’t last long.
By then, Cuilian had aged and lost her charm. Their reunion had only been an attempt to make up for the past. Yet she clung to him like a shadow, which deeply annoyed Bucky.
Growing frustrated, Bucky waved his hand.
“Alright, go back for now. Let me figure out what’s really going on.”
Cuilian, clearly unwilling, pleaded: “Brother Bucky, he’s my blood brother!”
“I know you never liked him, but for the sake of our past, can’t you help him just this once—teach the people who did this a lesson?”
Her words made Bucky explode in anger:
“If Fei Biu weren’t your brother, I would’ve dealt with him a long time ago!”
“He goes around using my name to bully others—I almost became a laughingstock because of him!”
Seeing Bucky furious, Cuilian didn’t dare say another word and quietly walked away.
She knew in her heart that Bucky had long since lost interest in an aging woman like her.
She had once married a stubborn old man. After he died, his children tried to force her out with nothing.
Luckily, Bucky had already become a big boss in Hung Hing by then. Thanks to his influence, she managed to get a portion of the inheritance.
From that moment on, Cuilian realized: as a woman with no power or status, the only way to survive in Hong Kong’s underworld was to cling tightly to Bucky.
Even though Bucky was now treating her colder than ever, she still refused to give up her connection to him.
After sending Cuilian away, Bucky returned to his turf, still irritated. As soon as he entered, he saw Brother Qiang busy working.
He waved him over.
“Ah Qiang, come here for a second.”
Brother Qiang smiled and approached.
“Ah Qiang, help me look into what happened with Fei Biu last night.”
Bucky asked right away.
But Brother Qiang didn’t move immediately and looked hesitant.
Seeing this, Bucky grew suspicious. “Why are you just standing there?”
After hesitating for a moment, Brother Qiang said, “Boss Bucky, I already know what happened.”
Bucky’s eyes lit up. “Then tell me—who cleaned him up and did the public a favor?”
