Chapter 18 – Bai Huanxi Jumped into the River! Refreshing!
Bai Huanxi’s mind was spinning. Thinking carefully about what had just happened, it seemed that in the end, no one had actually said where they were going with all that luggage.
Just as she stepped forward, intending to catch up and see where the two of them had finally settled, she noticed something unusual on her body.
She looked down and saw that both her legs were completely covered with ants, and a few stray bees were hovering nearby.
Before she could think further, she started frantically shaking her legs to get rid of the damned ants. At the same time, she could clearly see the number of bees rapidly increasing—and heading straight for her!
At that moment, Bai Huanxi completely lost her composure. She abandoned any semblance of being a proper lady, tossing it all aside.
Like a madwoman, she jumped and flailed in the middle of the street, trying to slap and shake the insects away. But the swarming bees were relentless. No matter how she dodged, they stung her.
Then, under the astonished gazes of onlookers, she leapt straight into the river…
Meanwhile, Xia Wanwan and her sister paid no attention to the commotion. They headed straight to the registration point. The attendant’s face lit up with extra wrinkles of joy when she saw them!
These days, very few families willingly went to the countryside. Most who went were crying or extremely reluctant. But seeing these two sisters walking over, chatting and laughing, was a rare sight.
“The two girls are here! Stand over here. Once everyone arrives, we’ll head to the train station!”
“All right!”
Xia Wanwan finally noticed a group of one boy and two girls already standing nearby. They looked like they were also going to the countryside. Xia Wanwan and Xia Yuwei found a free spot, set down their things, and stood casually waiting.
While waiting, Xia Wanwan couldn’t help but scrutinize the one boy and two girls.
All unfamiliar faces. She didn’t recognize any of them. The young ladies she had known before now avoided her entirely.
Moreover, families like hers wouldn’t have faced the countryside assignment if their family hadn’t fallen into misfortune. Now, with her family in disarray, she had no choice but to go.
In truth, poverty or wealth, nobility or lowliness, didn’t define a person—only their lifestyles differed. No one was inherently superior!
Of the two girls, one looked cold and aloof, her face icy, radiating an unapproachable aura—a true ice-queen beauty.
The other was petite, her slightly sharp features dripping with disdain and scorn, as if she were noble and everyone else lowly.
Such a person clearly had a mean streak. Best not to provoke her, or she would make life miserable.
Soon, another boy joined them. The six of them were guided by the registration staff toward the train station.
Since the station was only a few alleys away, everyone carried their luggage, following the staff closely.
At the train station, the staff handed each person a referral letter and train ticket. Fortunately, they all shared the same destination!
However, upon arrival at the county’s “educated youth” station, each would be sent to different brigades, so they might not stay in the same location.
Xia Wanwan didn’t care at all. But even when she didn’t cause trouble, trouble somehow found her.
The green train quietly arrived. Once onboard, they were pleasantly surprised to find their seats together.
No matter what, fate had brought them together. At least they were from the same place, fellow villagers to stick together for warmth.
After sitting down, they introduced themselves. The previously seen two girls and one boy were: the boy named Dang Guoan, the icy beauty named Huo Banyan, and the sharp-tongued girl named Wang Dongmei.
The last boy who joined them was Li Dachui—a true embodiment of his name, rugged and imposing.
“Hello everyone, this is my sister Xia Yuwei. I’m Xia Wanwan!”
“Hello! Since we’re going to the same place, if we end up in the same brigade, let’s help each other out!”
“Exactly what Brother Dachui said!” Xia Wanwan replied with a smile.
Among them, only Li Dachui was older—25 years old. Ordinarily, someone that age wouldn’t be sent to the countryside, but Li Dachui, honest and simple, went anyway.
His younger brother was a recent graduate, and the family feared he wouldn’t endure the hardships. So Li Dachui gave his job to his brother and went in his place. Xia Wanwan didn’t know whether to call him foolish or naive.
“Shameless! Seeing a man and calling him ‘brother’? I don’t want to stay near someone like this.”
Wang Dongmei’s sharp voice suddenly erupted, leaving the others momentarily stunned.
First to fly into a rage was obviously Li Dachui. Clenching his fists, he jumped up, glaring at Wang Dongmei, his eyes full of fury.
Her words had insulted not only the Wanwan girl opposite but also him. He might be honest, but he wasn’t stupid—he could tell when someone was talking nonsense.
“You, woman, how can your heart be so dirty?”
“Comrade Xia respectfully calls me ‘brother,’ showing respect. Unlike you, throwing dirt on someone else.”
“All right, if sitting here makes you uncomfortable, kindly leave!”
Li Dachui’s fists twitched, intimidating Wang Dongmei and Dang Guoan.
Wang Dongmei saw his fists and immediately lost her temper—but she had already spoken. Could she take it back?
Grumbling, she glared at them, picked up her things, and moved to the back seats.
Fortunately, the train wasn’t crowded this time. On a full train, she wouldn’t even have been able to move!
Dang Guoan couldn’t tolerate seeing someone bully a girl. He spoke up: “Li Dachui, how can you bully a woman?”
“When did I ever bully a woman? Explain that! She’s the one at fault, but it looks like I’m wrong!”
Li Dachui, tall and strong with a booming voice, drew everyone’s attention.
“I’m not arguing with you. Sending her away is your fault. If something happened to a female comrade on the road, what would we do?”
Xia Wanwan leaned on her sister’s shoulder, lazily nibbling an apple. “Comrade Dang Guoan, if you’re worried something might happen to Wang Dongmei, why don’t you sit with her?”
Huo Banyan, who had been aloof the whole time, couldn’t help but smile lightly at Xia Wanwan’s teasing.
Dang Guoan gaped but eventually could only glare at Xia Wanwan and her sister before taking his luggage to the back seats.
These people were cold-blooded, lacking even a shred of sympathy. They had just boarded and were already quarreling. He couldn’t bear seeing a girl bullied, so he acted.
Xia Wanwan, watching Dang Guoan’s retreating back, thought: Simp!
But what was the fate of a simp in the future? Simps end up with nothing!
She hoped he wouldn’t disappoint her.
