Chapter 20 – Emotions Amid Gunfire!
Xia Wanwan followed the group through several train cars. It seemed like they were heading somewhere specific—could there be a rendezvous person waiting?
Could thieves in this era really have such large-scale operations, organized and disciplined?
Unbeknownst to her, two other parties were also hiding in the shadows.
One was Lu Tingxiao, the other was an upright undercover agent. Both were confused by the little tail following behind.
But neither dared to act rashly, for fear of revealing themselves and failing their capture mission.
Xia Wanwan gradually felt something was off. Where were they heading?
The back seemed to be the cargo compartment.
Were there people there too?
Still, she didn’t dare act recklessly. Up ahead were three strong men.
If she revealed her strength, how could she maintain her image of dominance later?
But that didn’t stop her from punishing the wicked!
Soon, they reached the rear cargo compartment. The group nimbly climbed up, showing no fear of the moving train.
At this moment, Xia Wanwan felt a headache coming on. Were these really ordinary thieves?
Had thieves become this skilled now?
Was she out of touch, or had she underestimated them?
Driven by curiosity, she efficiently climbed onto the roof as well.
Fortunately, the night was pitch dark, and under the moonlight, it was nearly impossible to see a hand in front of one’s face. Even standing on the roof, the people ahead didn’t notice her.
The train’s noise helped too, and they certainly wouldn’t expect someone to follow so recklessly.
As Xia Wanwan got onto the roof, Lu Tingxiao crouched over and caught a familiar scent in the wind. He froze.
It was that girl’s scent.
A delicate orchid fragrance—could the person behind just now be her?
This was trouble.
The men ahead were bloodthirsty fighters. Wasn’t she walking straight to her death?
He had no idea how things had coincided this way. If he hadn’t seen his team outside earlier, he wouldn’t have realized the mission had brought everyone onto this train.
The target—the drug lord they had been chasing—had appeared, and the girl was following the person involved in the rendezvous.
“Team Leader Lu, move aside quickly.”
As the leading captain, they had chased this target from the border all the way here, just to make the capture.
The mission originally belonged to their team, but Lu Tingxiao had been on leave recently, leaving the subordinates to act.
They thought it would be easy, but the drug lord was too cunning, constantly evading them.
Tonight, they had to capture him—otherwise, it would be a loss of face for their vanguard team.
“Don’t hurt the person behind, that’s our own.”
“What? The last one is one of us?”
Huang Yulong was stunned. Had Team Leader Lu already prepared a backup?
No wonder he seemed so calm. With someone on their side, they could relax a bit. The group quietly climbed onto the roof.
Xia Wanwan, eyeing the three strong men ahead, jumped down to a section of the rear car.
Jumping off the train wasn’t an option—the flashlight had already lit that side. Could they be stealing cargo? Was the operation really this big?
She didn’t dare get too close, afraid of being spotted, but suddenly, there was movement behind her.
For a moment, Xia Wanwan thought she was doomed. They were trying to trap her!
Damn it! She hadn’t wanted to kill anyone, but now self-defense was necessary.
Her wooden energy had been prepared, ready to strike—able to save or kill.
“Don’t be afraid, it’s me!”
Xia Wanwan froze. The voice was familiar—it was… Lu Tingxiao!
She hurriedly turned to confirm, and seeing him nodded, she felt relieved.
He was a soldier. Those behind were brought by him. They were good people. She was under the state’s protection—nothing to fear!
“What about those people?”
“They’re in the light up ahead.”
Lu Tingxiao gestured to the back, and four or five men in black crouched, guns ready, moving swiftly.
“This is dangerous, go back…”
Before Xia Wanwan could reply, a fierce gunfight broke out.
Lu Tingxiao quickly pulled her down, and they narrowly avoided the flying bullets.
For a second, Xia Wanwan felt like she was back in the apocalypse, dodging bullets. But she knew she couldn’t expose herself too much—otherwise, suspicion would fall on her.
This man in front of her was the team leader. If he doubted her, she might face every interrogation technique imaginable. Could she survive?
“Danger. Stay behind me.”
Lu Tingxiao couldn’t guarantee she could safely retreat. But if she stayed behind him, she’d be fine. Her courage helped too.
For the first time, Xia Wanwan experienced being protected directly. She was touched. In the apocalypse, when she fought for her life, had anyone protected her?
No.
This body was already being cared for by her family. Now another person was protecting her…
Her eyes gleamed with excitement. This life might truly be happy.
Neither noticed that someone was climbing along the train’s edge, and someone below spotted them.
If not for the faint reflection of gunmetal in the moonlight, Xia Wanwan wouldn’t have seen the person below. But shots rang out. The only thing she could do was dive onto the man in front.
At the sound of the trigger, Lu Tingxiao spun to save her—but before he could move, the woman had leapt onto him. Their eyes met… Lu Tingxiao’s breath caught.
Their noses touched. Up close, Xia Wanwan could smell his intoxicating masculine scent.
But this was no time for infatuation. They quickly sprang up.
Lu Tingxiao fired at the attacker’s limbs. Two gunshots, a scream, and the other men rushed over.
Some jumped down to seize the criminals. Soon, the team had captured the men and recovered a pile of items. Xia Wanwan realized there really had been a rendezvous.
“Team Leader Lu, are you alright? Wait… that… that person is a woman?”
Huang Yulong was stunned. The celibate Lu had a woman by his side?
After so long, what was going on? Could she be his sister-in-law?
The one who had skillfully chased the drug lord was… his sister-in-law. Truly, a woman unmatched by men!
“Hello, sister-in-law!”
Huang Yulong’s words drew curious glances from the others.
Xia Wanwan blushed, preparing to run, but the moment she turned, someone grabbed her hand…
