5 – Is it difficult to cancel an engagement?
The long pleasantries ended, and the Lu family began to eat their meal.
At the dinner table, everyone showed a lot of concern for Lu Nian Nian. Several aunts were giving her food, being particularly attentive. In contrast, Lu Sui Sui’s side seemed particularly pitiful.
She herself didn’t feel anything, and was rather happy to be at ease.
She was actually quite afraid of people she wasn’t familiar with giving her food, because she was afraid they would give her something she didn’t like, but she had to consider the other person’s feelings and politely eat it.
She was focused on eating when suddenly chopsticks appeared in front of her.
Lu Sui Sui looked up. It was Lu Jingshan giving her the braised pork she liked to eat. Her heart warmed. “Thank you, Dad.”
Lu Jingshan: “Eat more.”
Lu Sui Sui nodded. She was eating quite a bit.
Lu Nian Nian was about to take the serving chopsticks when she saw Lu Sui Sui’s lip language and silently withdrew her hand.
She didn’t need them.
She was afraid that if they gave her food, the other relatives would follow suit out of consideration for Lu Jingshan’s feelings, and she would be stuffed again tonight.
After eating, the Lu family relatives said some polite words and said goodbye one after another.
One group after another left, and the last one to remain was actually Pei Zhixing.
Lu Sui Sui wasn’t familiar with him. She only knew that this character was revered by the author in the novel as someone no woman could bring down from his pedestal. Even Lu Qinghua, the daughter of the Second Aunt who was later brought out by the author as the protagonist, couldn’t do it.
In the novel’s ending, he was a lonely old man who dedicated his body and mind to his career.
“Dad, I’ll go upstairs first.”
Lu Sui Sui thought that she wasn’t of much use here, so it was more appropriate to leave first.
“Wait a minute.” Lu Jingshan looked at her. “I forgot to properly introduce you to Ah-Xing just now.”
“……”
Lu Jingshan didn’t notice her embarrassment and looked at Pei Zhixing, saying, “Ah-Xing, I’ll have to trouble you to take care of Sui Sui in the future.”
Lu Sui Sui was surprised. The next sentence she heard from Lu Jingshan was, “Sui Sui, although you don’t want me to interfere in your affairs in the entertainment industry, Dad is still worried, so I want Ah-Xing to take over and help you handle things. What do you think?”
Lu Sui Sui was stunned.
Lu Jingshan explained, “You know New Film, right? That’s an entertainment company that Ah-Xing invested in with his friends.”
New Film Entertainment was the hottest and most famous entertainment company in recent years. The Best Actor and Best Actress from the year before last and last year, as well as the most popular traffic stars recently, were all artists from their company.
But in the novel, this important information wasn’t mentioned.
Lu Sui Sui was surprised for two seconds and nodded.
Lu Jingshan: “……”
He wasn’t very familiar with Lu Sui Sui’s personality and hesitated, “Do you think it’s okay?”
Lu Sui Sui thought for a while and agreed.
She wanted to terminate her contract with her previous company. She might be able to handle it on her own, but it would be more difficult, and the tug-of-war would be very long.
Moreover, she would continue to film in the future, so she would inevitably have to find a new agency and make new plans.
Lu Sui Sui had a flexible personality and didn’t have the idea that she wouldn’t accept anyone’s help and had to handle everything on her own.
The reason she refused Lu Jingshan’s offer to remove the trending search yesterday was because that method wasn’t feasible. What’s more, she knew Lu Jingshan’s worries. He didn’t want to see his daughter being scolded so badly again.
Seeing her agree, Lu Jingshan breathed a sigh of relief.
He looked at the two of them with a smile, “Then I’ll let Ah-Xing communicate with you?”
Pei Zhixing was very busy and didn’t care much about the entertainment industry. He asked for Lu Sui Sui’s contact information and told her that someone would call her later to discuss the details, and she could tell the other party what she needed.
After speaking, he said goodbye to Lu Jingshan and left early.
.
.
.
After the person left, Lu Nian Nian ran down from upstairs and sat with Lu Sui Sui, “Sister, what do you think of Pei Zhixing?”
“?”
Lu Sui Sui thought about it. Based on their few words of conversation, she really couldn’t make an in-depth comment on this person.
Thinking of this, she asked, “What aspects do you want to hear about?”
“Is he handsome?”
“Handsome.” This was the truth. Lu Sui Sui had also chased idols for a while before. This Pei Zhixing was much more handsome than her previous idols.
She was a face-con, and her idol was already the most handsome and best-looking one she had carefully selected.
Lu Nian Nian: “He’s super rich and super capable.”
Lu Sui Sui: “Oh.”
She knew this, but it had nothing to do with her. She was envious, but not jealous.
Lu Nian Nian looked at her and told her in a low voice, “He’s still your fiancé.”
“……?”
Lu Sui Sui blinked and looked at her blankly, “Isn’t he your fiancé?”
How did he become hers? Was the wealthy that casual?!
“No.”
Lu Nian Nian explained in a panic, “Pei Zhixing is your fiancé who was arranged since you were a child, but before you were found, they all thought it was me.”
She explained, “Except for some people in our circle, many people actually don’t know that I’m not Dad’s biological daughter.”
Therefore, after they knew that the Pei and Lu families had a childhood sweetheart arrangement, they naturally assumed that she was Pei Zhixing’s fiancée.
Lu Sui Sui was dumbfounded.
To be honest, she didn’t think she needed a fiancé.
She pondered for a long time and asked without much consideration, “Is it difficult to cancel the engagement?”
Lu Nian Nian: “?”
Lu Jingshan, who had just finished a phone call and returned from outside: “?”
He glanced at his daughter’s side, thought for a while, and sent a message to Pei Zhixing.
Lu Jingshan: 「Ah Xing, if you have time, have your parents come to my house for a meal, let’s talk about canceling the engagement.」
Before Pei Zhixing could reply, Lu Jingshan continued to send: 「Sui Sui doesn’t seem to like you very much. As her father, I don’t want to force her. Let’s find an opportunity to make this clear.」
After sending it, Lu Jingshan felt that Pei Zhixing was really good. Apart from him, he hadn’t found anyone more suitable to be his son-in-law for the time being.
Thinking of this, Lu Jingshan added another rambling sentence: 「Of course, if you have feelings for Sui Sui and think my daughter is not bad, then perform well and try to change her opinion of you. If you need any help from Uncle Lu, just ask.。」
At this moment, Pei Zhixing was on the phone with Ms. Yan.
Ms. Yan Siyin showed a lot of concern for the daughter of her deceased best friend, asking about everything in detail. What did she like to eat, how many words did she say at night, was she happy to meet the relatives of the Lu family, was she getting used to being at the Lu family, etc., she asked about everything.
Finally, Ms. Yan asked the most critical question, “What do you think of Sui Sui?”
Pei Zhixing: “…What kind of evaluation do you want to hear?”
Yan Siyin was silent for a while and said, “She is your Aunt Su Ci’s daughter. Of course, Mom wants to hear you say good things about her, but I’ve seen a lot of news…”
She sighed, turning thousands of words into one sentence: “This child has suffered.”
If she had a good life, she wouldn’t bully newcomers for a role, wouldn’t try to gain popularity by associating with other artists, and wouldn’t need to accompany directors to drink and eat.
These were the revelations that Yan Siyin saw. Although she couldn’t believe them 100%, there was no way around it. There were many photos and facts in front of her.
Therefore, Yan Siyin believed that the root cause of these things was that she was lost.
Pei Zhixing “Mm”ed and said softly, “Seeing is not necessarily believing.”
Yan Siyin was stunned and said excitedly, “You mean… you think Sui Sui is not that kind of person?”
Before Pei Zhixing could answer, Yan Siyin continued to ask, “Then do you like Sui Sui?”
“……”
Pei Zhixing had a headache, “Mom.”
Just as he was about to speak, he caught a glimpse of a new message coming in on WeChat. After reading it, Pei Zhixing said, “Whether I like her or not is not important.”
“Then what’s important?”
Pei Zhixing read out Lu Jingshan’s words, “Uncle Lu is asking when you’re free to discuss the cancellation of the engagement. His daughter doesn’t like me.”
Yan Siyin: “Ah?”
.
.
.
Lu Sui Sui didn’t know that Lu Jingshan was already helping her solve her troubles.
After staying in the living room with Lu Nian Nian for a while, she went back to her room first.
Not long after returning to her room, she received a strange call. It was from Xia Li, the person Pei Zhixing had arranged to handle those matters for her.
She was an agent who could be called a top agent in New Film, and even in the entire entertainment industry.
Xia Li stated her intentions and asked her some key questions.
When she heard that Lu Sui Sui still had more than ten years left on her contract, she was obviously surprised, “How did you sign such a garbage contract?”
Lu Sui Sui was speechless, “My adoptive parents signed it.”
“Damn.” Xia Li had a fiery temper, “They might be brain-dead!”
Lu Sui Sui smiled, “Maybe.”
If they weren’t brain-dead, how could they have abused the original owner to this extent?
Xia Li took a deep breath, “It’s not clear over the phone. Do you have time tomorrow? Let’s meet and talk?”
“Okay.” Lu Sui Sui didn’t refuse, “I have to go to the set to film tomorrow, can we do it in the evening?”
Xia Li thought of the information she had just checked and asked, “Is it that drama adapted from an 18+ novel?”
“Mm.”
Xia Li: “Don’t go, there’s no way this drama can be broadcasted without any accidents. I’ll tell the boss and just terminate the contract for you.”
Lu Sui Sui: “Don’t, terminating the contract would be too easy for them. Anyway, I don’t have many scenes left, I can finish filming.”
Seeing her insist, Xia Li didn’t try to persuade her anymore, “Okay, see you tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Sister Xia Li.”
“You’re welcome.”
After hanging up the phone, Lu Sui Sui told Lele to wait for her at the old place tomorrow before washing up and resting.
.
.
.
The next day, Lu Sui Sui appeared on the set as usual.
Strangely, the makeup artists and staff on the set didn’t make things difficult for her today. They gave her makeup when they were supposed to, and let her rest when they were supposed to, just like they treated other ordinary artists.
Lu Sui Sui was a little surprised, but she didn’t ask out of curiosity.
It wasn’t until after filming that Lele told her that because of what happened yesterday, Wen Yutong’s leg wouldn’t be able to come to the set to film for a short period of time. The director was very angry about this, but because of Wen Yutong’s popularity, he couldn’t replace her, so he could only speed up the progress of other artists. Therefore, no one dared to delay the progress because of other small matters.
Even when giving Lu Sui Sui makeup, they were incredibly enthusiastic and proactive.
After listening, Lu Sui Sui said with a smile, “Then I can be considered to have turned misfortune into blessing?”
Lele snorted, “You don’t even know what the netizens were scolding you for before our video was released. What kind of blessing is that?”
Lu Sui Sui looked at her, “Barely counts, right?”
At least, she wasn’t being scolded by the entire internet anymore. As for the others, she would take it slowly.
The meeting with Xia Li went smoothly. She was not much different from what Lu Sui Sui had learned, a very decisive agent with methods, resources, and vision.
After learning about her thoughts last night, Xia Li had already brought the termination agreement with her today.
“Take a look at this termination agreement and see if there’s anything that needs to be modified.”
Lu Sui Sui nodded, opened it, and looked at it, saying, “There’s nothing wrong with the contract, but I estimate that they won’t let me go so easily.”
Xia Li snorted coldly, “Of course, they will definitely ask for a sky-high price.”
Lu Sui Sui “Mm”ed, was silent for a while, and said, “But I don’t want to give them a single cent.”
Xia Li was stunned and looked at her, “Are you confident?”
“Halfway.” Lu Sui Sui handed her the signed contract she had found and said softly, “This contract wasn’t signed by me. Can this be considered a starting point?”
Xia Li’s eyes lit up, “Of course, is there anything else?”
Lu Sui Sui nodded and took out a document from her bag, “I found that my household registration is not actually under my adoptive parents’ household registration.”
The original owner was adopted, and the procedures were indeed completed. But it was just a contract signed with the orphanage. After taking her home, the original owner’s adoptive parents learned that they had to return to their hometown to register her household registration. After finding connections, they didn’t bother to do it.
They didn’t want to go back to their hometown, so they spent some money to find someone to make a fake one.
The schools that Lu Sui Sui attended in elementary and middle school weren’t very good. They were the kind that could be settled with a little money, so no one checked.
So no one discovered this problem, and even the original owner didn’t know about it.
These things were only revealed in the novel when it developed to the later stages.
Xia Li was stunned, completely not expecting that there would be such crucial evidence.
“Okay.” She said, “I’ll communicate with the company’s lawyer when I get back and call you again.”
Lu Sui Sui nodded, “Okay, thank you, Sister Xia Li.”
Xia Li glanced at her, took a sip of coffee, and said, “You’re very different.”
Lu Sui Sui was slightly stunned and joked, “People are bound to change.”
Xia Li nodded and clinked glasses with her, “Now that you’ve become like this, I’m confident that I can make you popular.”
Actually, when she first received the boss’s call asking her to handle Lu Sui Sui’s affairs, Xia Li had said that she refused, but the boss told her to contact her first, and if it really didn’t work, she wouldn’t force her.
After that phone call last night, Xia Li realized that Lu Sui Sui was not quite the same as what was revealed online.
After talking face-to-face, she began to look forward to her future time with Lu Sui Sui.
She thought that the person in front of her, who was smart and had her own little ideas, would definitely become very popular as long as she worked hard.
.
.
.
After talking with Xia Li, Lu Sui Sui returned to the original owner’s apartment.
After taking away the original owner’s important things, Lu Sui Sui received a call from Chen Pei, who had changed her number, on the way back to the Lu family.
As soon as the call connected, Chen Pei began to scold her, verbally suppressing her.
If she were the original owner, she felt that she would be unable to breathe.
Lu Sui Sui herself didn’t feel much, and even conveniently started recording.
After Chen Pei was tired of scolding, she said, “Sister Pei, your call came at the right time. I also have something to talk to you about.”
Chen Pei sneered, “Lu Sui Sui, you only want to ask me for help when you have something, what do you think I am—”
Before she could finish her words, Lu Sui Sui interrupted, “I’m not asking you for help.”
She said very calmly, “I’m just notifying you that I’ll be going to the company tomorrow to talk about terminating the contract.”
Chen Pei was stunned, and suddenly reacted, mocking as if she had heard a big joke, “What did you say? You want to terminate the contract with us? You’re dreaming! Have you forgotten that you still have… beep beep beep...”
Looking at the phone that had been hung up, Chen Pei kicked the table and cursed through gritted teeth, “Damn it, you really think your wings have hardened, huh?”
The assistant next to her listened, not daring to breathe loudly.
.
.
.
Back home, only the aunt was there. Lu Jingshan and Lu Nian Nian were both busy with work.
In contrast, Lu Sui Sui had become an idle person.
The idle person ate dinner, wandered around the yard, and then slowly returned to her room.
Back in her room, Lu Sui Sui finally picked up her phone and went on Weibo. There was too much hostility on the original owner’s Weibo. Many haters sent her messages every day to scold her. She didn’t want to see them at all. She just wanted to be a happy person.
However, Lu Sui Sui didn’t expect that this time when she opened her private messages and Weibo comments, what she saw the most wasn’t people scolding her, but asking her when she would follow Lu Nian Nian back.
Lu Sui Sui: ?
She flipped through them and then remembered that she had forgotten to follow Lu Nian Nian back.
Because of her not-so-good memory, netizens were already checking in under her Weibo:
—Did Lu Sui Sui follow Lu Nian Nian back today?
—No.
Lu Sui Sui looked at it, unable to help but smile.
She curved her lips, searched for Lu Nian Nian’s Weibo, clicked follow back, and also conveniently followed her studio.
After doing these things, she went to the check-in base in a good mood to leave a comment and reply: —Yes.
The Author has something to say:
Nian Nian: Oh my gosh, my sister followed me back!
President Pei: My fiancée said she wanted to cancel the engagement today.
