Chapter 44: Matching Your Eight Characters (Horoscopes)
Chu Peihan leaned in close to her and winked. “Keep that household registration booklet safe. It’s still got a big use.”
Jiang Yunhe: “Huh?”
Chu Peihan: “The marriage certificate.”
You want to get married, right? Gotta pull out the household registration booklet for that!
When the date calculated by Third Auntie comes out to be auspicious, he’ll go with her to get the marriage license immediately. Once that’s done, all will be well.
Jiang Yunhe’s mouth twitched. She hadn’t expected him to be talking about that.
Still, she had no intention of returning the booklet anyway!
She had originally thought Jiang Dazhuang wouldn’t hand it over. Unexpectedly, he gave in so easily—how interesting. A fool is always a fool!
She was planning to sell off the Jiang family’s homestead anyway. The booklet would serve as her ID. A thousand bucks? Hah. However they swallowed it, they’re going to cough it back up the same way.
Chu Peihan could guess what she was thinking. He gently patted her head. “Be careful not to push them too far. Also, make sure you keep yourself clean in the process.”
Jiang Yunhe: “Of course.”
Zhao Guixiang heard the two of them whispering but didn’t interrupt. Instead, she patiently waited until they were done before calling them over.
“Peihan, you’ll eat dinner at my house tonight. But food is one thing—I’m not putting you up for the night.”
“Of course.” Chu Peihan sincerely thanked her. If it weren’t for her, this whole issue wouldn’t have been resolved so smoothly. “Third Auntie…”
“Alright, I know what you’re trying to say. No need. Back in the day, your grandpa and I were close. Seeing you like this now—it makes me happy.” Zhao Guixiang wiped her eyes. As she got older, she found herself more emotional. Seeing how far Peihan had fallen—it hurt to watch.
Luckily, Yunhe was a good girl.
Jiang Yunhe didn’t know about any of that, but clearly, fate between them ran deeper than she realized. After a short rest, she stood up. “Third Auntie, I’ll go cook something.”
Zhao Guixiang quickly nodded. “Good, good. Strictly speaking, I should be cooking for you two. But just this once, I’ll impose and try your cooking instead.”
She worded it very nicely.
Jiang Yunhe wasn’t stupid—she understood. This was Zhao Guixiang’s way of looking out for her feelings: giving her something to do so she wouldn’t overthink, and making sure she didn’t feel guilty.
But honestly, that was unnecessary.
Was she the type to feel guilty?
That disgusting bunch from the Jiang family couldn’t affect her even if they tried.
Chu Peihan couldn’t see what was going through her mind, but he still watched her go with tenderness all over his face. Zhao Guixiang was briefly stunned, and then chuckled.
“Peihan, I thought you were going to be cold and detached your whole life.”
“Third Auntie…” Chu Peihan’s face reddened a little. “Don’t tease me. It’s rare that I actually like someone.”
“I know, I know. You’ve really changed!” Zhao Guixiang sighed. People always said girls changed the most as they grew, but boys—perhaps even more so.
Back then, Chu Peihan had been a mischievous little monkey. Now he seemed much more mature.
Chu Peihan felt a bit complicated, so he changed the subject: “Third Auntie, about what happened last night…”
Zhao Guixiang: “You mean Li Daniu? That man’s not stupid—he’s probably facing some hardship. Otherwise, he’d never take the side of those educated youth.”
She might not leave her house often, but she knew all the goings-on in the village.
Even if she didn’t go out, others always came to chat and gossip, so she wasn’t the least bit surprised when Jiang Yunhe showed up.
Chu Peihan understood but still looked troubled. “If he sides with that Fang girl again in the future… what then?”
Zhao Guixiang smiled. “Then you deal with it however it needs to be dealt with. What are you scared of? Besides, you’ve already split from that family. Nothing to fear. Tell Xiao He to keep the family severance letter safe, and once her household registration is transferred, marry her and bring her home. After that, let them cause all the chaos they want—it won’t involve you two!”
Honestly, they didn’t need her to spell it out. But saying it aloud made everything clearer.
Chu Peihan nodded. He got it.
Zhao Guixiang lit a cigarette and said slowly, “Don’t worry. No matter what, there’s no way an outsider can come into this village and stir up trouble. Come on, give me your birth date and time—I’ll calculate your compatibility.”
Chu Peihan actually looked a little shy and reported it softly.
Zhao Guixiang pondered for a moment, then quickly calculated using her fingers. After a while, she stopped, though her expression was a bit strange.
She gave him a deep look.
Chu Peihan’s heart skipped. He suddenly felt like he’d been seen through.
“Xiao He, Xiao He!”
“Third Auntie? What is it?” Jiang Yunhe poked her head out of the courtyard, a bit confused. “Do you have any dietary restrictions?”
“Give me your birth date and time,” Zhao Guixiang said, eyes slightly serious but face still calm.
“Oh… Winter Solstice month, the 26th, around 3 p.m.” Jiang Yunhe remembered clearly. Even though so much time had passed.
Back then, Sun Meilin used to complain endlessly about how hard it had been to give birth to her, how much pain she’d gone through. And that dead old woman—her so-called grandmother—used to express how dissatisfied she was with her.
Zhao Guixiang listened, then began calculating again. But the more she calculated, the more her brows furrowed. Eventually, sweat formed on her forehead—she looked exhausted.
Chu Peihan almost told her to stop. If it came to it, he could just pick a date from the almanac himself. No need for her to wear herself out like this.
Finally, she let out a deep sigh, closed her eyes, and rested for a long moment.
“You two… Forget it. October 10th is a good day. Let’s go with that.”
“Ah, okay!” Chu Peihan was momentarily overwhelmed. A hundred thoughts flashed through his mind, and from her expression, it really did seem like she’d seen something.
It made him uncomfortable, like he’d been stripped bare.
Outside, Jiang Yunhe felt the same way!
She had no idea Chu Peihan was keeping secrets from her. Right now, she was nervously thinking: Did Third Auntie figure out that I’ve been reborn?!
If that were true… what should she do?
The moment she gave her birth details, she regretted it. She should’ve made an excuse to avoid the topic.
And now… what now?
But when she heard Zhao Guixiang’s decision, Jiang Yunhe finally breathed a sigh of relief. She turned and went back to cooking. She wouldn’t dare pull tricks in Third Auntie’s house.
She just swapped out the original cabbage with some from her space, used spring water instead of tap, and slapped a few flatbreads on the side of the pot—a typical chaotic stew, with a bit of everything.
At the very least, the nutrition was balanced.
Before long—it was time to eat!
