Chapter 49: One Can’t Always Be a Gentleman / The First Kiss Has Arrived
Jiang Yunhe’s mouth twitched slightly as she finally understood what he meant. So basically, he wanted her to earn merit points for him. Why didn’t he just say it outright? Why go through all the trouble of dancing around it? So troublesome.
Red Carp (Hongli) immediately corrected, “Master, that’s not right. We need to be fair and just. No rewards without effort.”
Jiang Yunhe sighed, “Got it. So, what can I buy with the remaining 400 merit points?”
Red Carp (Hongli) replied, “Accessing ancient books and learning new skills requires 1,000 points, so you’re still a long way off! But Master, you can buy something else you want instead.”
As he spoke, a virtual screen popped up in front of her—like a modern smartphone, only far more advanced.
Jiang Yunhe was once again amazed. It looked ancient yet high-tech at the same time. The more she saw, the more curious she became about this place.
After browsing through it, she found that what she could do was very limited—everything required merit points, and everything was outrageously expensive.
But one thing caught her interest.
“What’s teleportation?”
“It’s this function. You can move from here to there—well, your physical body… or vessel… only about 200 meters though,” Red Carp (Hongli) explained helpfully. It wasn’t very useful but not entirely useless either.
“200 merit points.” Jiang Yunhe felt the sting of poverty. If she had more, of course she’d just buy whatever she wanted without hesitation.
But now, she was clearly in a tough spot.
“Forget it, I’ll buy it!”
“Alrighty!” Red Carp (Hongli) was overjoyed. It was the first time he’d met such a generous buyer. Honestly, he could never have too many of these.
The more, the better!
Jiang Yunhe just wanted to test the teleportation feature—she didn’t think too much about it. But what really bothered her was that Gu Qingyu was supposed to come pick up vegetables tomorrow.
And tonight… she’d already had a big falling out with the Jiang family!
Clearly, she could no longer use their garden as cover. And with the way that couple acted, even if she wanted to, they wouldn’t let her. She needed to find a new, barren plot of land.
“I’ve got a solution. Just buy a ‘One Leaf Obscures the Eye’ charm. That way, all problems are solved. You can make people see whatever you want them to see.”
“Really?” Jiang Yunhe was surprised but quickly accepted it—nothing to doubt. There’s spiritual spring water and all kinds of magical items. Why not this too?
Besides, she’d eaten those fruits herself.
Red Carp (Hongli) assured her she just needed to find land; he could create a vegetable garden for her and make sure no one could see through it.
But it would only last for a while.
After the illusion passed, she’d still have to work hard on her own.
Jiang Yunhe was tempted. “How much merit?”
Red Carp (Hongli): “Not expensive at all. Just 200.”
Jiang Yunhe: “…”
Great. All the merit she just earned—gone.
Basically, she worked her butt off, only for him to clean her out again.
Red Carp (Hongli) was so happy he rolled around on the floor. He felt like he’d instantly become rich. But it was fair—Jiang Yunhe wanted something and exchanged it with her own effort. Reasonable enough.
Seeing him so energetic, Jiang Yunhe couldn’t help but smile too. It was rare to see him this lively!
Fair trade—silver for goods. Not bad.
Now the only problem was figuring out how she’d earn more merit. That wasn’t exactly easy. You don’t just stumble upon life-saving scenarios every day.
She couldn’t just stay in the hospital 24/7, waiting for someone to drop dead so she could help. That thought alone was laughable.
Totally unrealistic.
Red Carp (Hongli) caught her drift and sighed too. Right? It’s not like people just hand out missions. And most of those missions involve someone on the brink of death, so the stakes are high.
What worried him most was that his master… didn’t know anything.
Even if she had a treasure trove in front of her, she wouldn’t know how to use it.
“Oh no, Master, hurry! Third Aunt is in trouble!”
“What?!” Jiang Yunhe’s consciousness jolted as she snapped back into reality. When she opened her eyes, she saw Zhao Guixiang’s face flushed red, gasping for breath and struggling violently.
Yet she was completely unconscious.
This…
Jiang Yunhe knew nothing about medicine and couldn’t even tell what was happening. She shouted her name while scrambling to figure out what to do.
What should she do?!
“Water! Spiritual spring water!”
“Yes, yes! Here!” Red Carp (Hongli) didn’t dare delay. He handed over everything he could. This was a life-and-death matter—and merit was at stake too.
Although that thought felt a little callous… he couldn’t help it.
Jiang Yunhe took the water bubble and gently placed it near Zhao Guixiang’s lips, tearing a small opening so she could drink it. She was worried—could someone unconscious even swallow?
Thankfully, there was no problem.
After the spiritual water went down, Zhao Guixiang’s face visibly improved, but she remained unconscious, with no response.
Jiang Yunhe didn’t waste a second—she ran outside to get help.
The first person she thought of: Chu Peihan!
She didn’t expect to find the very person she’d dropped home an hour ago now standing at Zhao Guixiang’s door. When he saw her come out, he rushed over.
“Chu Peihan, what are you doing here?!”
“I…”
“Standing at attention?”
“I was worried you’d get into trouble. And I was afraid they’d come make things hard for you,” Chu Peihan explained. Also, he was scared he’d lose the girl he hadn’t even gotten yet.
“What kind of trouble could I get into?” Jiang Yunhe laughed, both amused and touched. She pulled him into the house. “Third Aunt is in trouble. Watch over her. I’m going to find Brother Wang.”
“I’ll go!” Chu Peihan frowned. “You stay. It’s the middle of the night.”
“If you go, I’ll worry even more!” Jiang Yunhe thought to herself—with his eyesight, what if he trips and falls? I’d be done for. No way she was letting that happen.
So she shoved him inside and dashed out herself.
Chu Peihan felt awkward but quickly entered. Moments like this reminded him how helpless he felt—how useless he was when it really mattered.
If it weren’t for this vision problem…
Jiang Yunhe soon returned and apologized profusely to Brother Wang. It was the middle of the night, after all. She felt really bad.
Thankfully, Brother Wang didn’t mind.
In fact, he praised her for her decisiveness earlier that evening.
Few girls could act that quickly and clearly in a crisis. She did well.
Jiang Yunhe didn’t say much—talk too much, and you risk slipping up. What if she accidentally revealed her reincarnation secret?
Back at the Zhao household, it was another round of chaos. By the time they got Zhao Guixiang to the hospital, it was past midnight. Along the way, Jiang Yunhe secretly fed her more spiritual water.
She wasn’t hoping for miracles. As long as it helped, it was worth it.
Brother Wang’s cattle whip even sparked with electricity again. But after all the tests, the doctors said it wasn’t serious.
Just high blood pressure-induced fainting.
Jiang Yunhe was stunned. No way—Third Aunt looked way worse than that.
She truly believed that if someone hadn’t been there tonight… she might not have made it.
Then—her mind rang with a system message:
“Merit Achieved: 500 Points!”
“…”
So the spiritual water did work?!
But why hadn’t Chu Peihan reacted at all?
Jiang Yunhe couldn’t figure it out and quietly asked Red Carp (Hongli).
Unfortunately, he didn’t know either.
He was only the space manager—nothing else was under his jurisdiction, so he couldn’t give her any answers.
“But Master, the spiritual spring water definitely has no side effects. I drink it every day and look—I’m still bouncing with energy!”
“…Fine.” Jiang Yunhe’s mouth twitched again, but she had to admit—he had a point. He was a living example.
Now that Third Aunt was safe, she could finally relax.
Chu Peihan stayed by her side the whole time. They were still at the same old hospital—there just weren’t better options in this county.
“Want to go back?”
“No. I want to wait until Third Aunt wakes up.” Jiang Yunhe yawned lazily. Honestly, today had been eventful.
“Then I’ll ask Brother Wang to go home and rest,” Chu Peihan said softly. He, after all, didn’t have to farm in the morning.
“Okay.” Jiang Yunhe nodded. Let him go rest—of all of them, she and Chu Peihan were the most idle now. Nothing to do, nowhere to be.
When Chu Peihan returned, he found her dozing off with her head tilted—utterly adorable.
To have a wife like this in this lifetime, he felt truly content.
He walked over and knelt beside her.
His eyesight was poor. Without straining, he couldn’t clearly make out her features. Even now, this close, her face was still a little blurry.
If he could… he really wanted to see what Jiang Yunhe looked like.
Jiang Yunhe fully trusted him. She didn’t notice how close he was or that he was staring at her intently. If she had, she might’ve woken up.
But right now, she was completely relaxed.
Thud—
She slumped right into his arms.
Chu Peihan hadn’t intended to do anything—just look. But in this moment, he thought…
One can’t always be a gentleman.
Sometimes, when you want something—you have to take the initiative.
So when Jiang Yunhe fell into his arms, he adjusted his position slightly—and his lips touched hers.
Very gently. Barely a touch.
Their breaths tangled together.
Chu Peihan’s heart was a mess.
