Before getting in the car, Yu Yan gave Shen Yuchan a series of instructions. Before he could finish his words, Yu Chen forcibly pulled him into the car.
Yu Yan sent a few messages to Shen Yuchan, but didn’t get a response. When he turned around, he noticed that Jian Ran had won the Feitian Award for Best Supporting Actor, with several related keywords trending on social media. The group chat was already buzzing.
It was clear that Jian Ran was excited, even writing a little essay to thank him.
[Yu Yan: You’re welcome, it’s all thanks to your hard work.]
[Jian Ran: If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t even know where I am right now.]
[Yu Yan: How’s the new movie? Is the shooting going smoothly?]
[Jian Ran: Pretty good, everyone’s taking good care of me. Thanks, Brother Yan.]
[He Zhiyu: Why didn’t you ask me if it went smoothly? Do you look down on me?]
[Yu Yan: When do you start filming?]
[He Zhiyu: Soon, just these couple of days.]
He Zhiyu had recently taken on a movie called Falling into the Ordinary. It was said that the investor was a relative of his family, and the script was almost tailor-made for him. The character was standout, the theme was good, and it seemed to be aimed at winning awards.
Among the people around him, only He Zhiyu didn’t need his concern. If He Zhiyu couldn’t make it in the entertainment industry, he would have to go back and inherit the family fortune.
[He Zhiyu: Do you have time? Would you like to cameo in a few scenes? I can ask the director to arrange it.]
[Yu Yan: @Cao Yuanye @Song Yunji Jian Ran, should be able to spare some time, right?]
[Song Yunji: No problem, if there’s a suitable role, just let us know.]
[Jian Ran: Thanks for the offer, but I’m good.]
[Yu Yan: Find a role for Cao Yuanye that can show his face.]
[He Zhiyu: OK.]
Jian Ran was already shooting a big-budget movie, so whether or not he went to another set to do a cameo wouldn’t affect anything. Song Yunji and Cao Yuanye were mostly working on web dramas or small-budget TV series, so getting screen time on the big screen would definitely help their future careers.
Yu Yan didn’t expect He Zhiyu to still think about them. He was so pleased that he typed a long message, praising He Zhiyu’s handsomeness and their brotherly bond, leaving He Zhiyu so happy he didn’t know where to go.
Yu Chen thought he was texting Shen Yuchan and spoke with irritation, “Playing on your phone in the car? You’ve got great eyesight?”
Yu Yan made a gesture, pointing at his eyes and said, “Bro, 5.0.”
“Keep playing and it’ll be 0.5,” Yu Chen said, sounding upset.
“Don’t scare me, I put eye drops every day, and I use a steam eye mask and eye patches.”
Yu Chen raised an eyebrow, “Does that stuff really work?”
“It should, right?” Yu Yan muttered, and replied to a few more messages.
“You really can’t stop sending those useless messages, can you?” Yu Chen’s tone was frustrated. He had things on his mind, but couldn’t bring them up.
“Xiao Ran Ran won the Feitian Award. I just sent him a congratulatory message.”
Yu Yan obediently put away his phone and sat up straight like a student.
Yu Chen choked on his words and fell silent.
Yu Lin, who was driving, curiously asked, “Who is Xiao Ranran?”
“Is it a girl?”
“No, it’s a boy. He’s an artist I manage, named Jian Ran. He’s really good-looking, and today he won the Best Supporting Actor award.” Yu Yan chuckled a couple of times.
“Wow, great job, baby! Less than half a year into the job, and one of your artists has already won an award.”
“Even a top agent wouldn’t be this efficient, right?” Yu Lin joked right after.
Yu Yan felt a bit embarrassed. “It’s all his own hard work, I didn’t do much.”
He was well aware of his own capabilities. If it weren’t for his connection with Minghua and the support from his family, he wouldn’t have been able to negotiate with directors and secure such great roles for Jian Ran.
Of course, Jian Ran’s talent played a big part in his fast development as well.
“You can’t say it like that. If it weren’t for you, he wouldn’t have gotten the award.” Jiang Moxi said with a smile, “We should celebrate. How about mom makes some small cakes tomorrow?”
“How about a cherry cake? Big brother likes it.” Yu Yan deliberately nudged Yu Chen with his elbow and winked at him.
Jiang Moxi agreed, “The cherry cake you posted on WeChat a couple of days ago, was it made by Xiao Yuan? It looked so good.”
“Yes,” Yu Chen’s expression softened, “She made it for me to taste. She said if I liked it, she’d make more and bring it to you.”
With Yu Yan intentionally easing the mood, Yu Chen’s awkward demeanor quickly faded.
Yu Lin suddenly became curious and asked, “What are you thinking?”
Yu Yan snapped out of his thoughts, “Bro, don’t you have a friend named Shen Yuming? Why didn’t he come to the engagement banquet?”
The moment those words fell, the car was suddenly silent.
Yu Chen and Jiang Moxi exchanged glances through the rearview mirror but neither spoke first.
The family knew that Yu Yan became uncomfortable whenever Shen Yuming’s name came up, which is why they hadn’t mentioned him.
Yu Chen lowered his eyes, lightly rubbing his fingers together, wondering whether he should take this opportunity to tell Yu Yan the truth and let him stay away from Shen Yuming, cutting off his attachment to him.
If Shen Yuming were playing tricks on Yu Yan, he wouldn’t be able to handle it.
But if he just told him like this, Yu Yan would definitely hold it against him.
Just as Yu Chen was at a loss, Jiang Moxi intervened, “Has Shen Yuming gone abroad?”
Yu Chen realized, “He’s been abroad for a while now. I haven’t been in touch with him, so I don’t know how he’s doing now.”
It seemed that things were quite different from the original story. Shen Yuming had gone abroad and didn’t let Yu Chen work at his company.
Yu Yan, in a good mood, hummed a song, completely unaware that Jiang Moxi and Yu Chen exchanged another glance in the rearview mirror, even shaking their heads at Yu Chen.
Shen Yuchen had already arrived home and sent a picture of him icing his injury.
Yu Yan zoomed in on the photo to examine it carefully, and saw nothing wrong with it.
[Yu Yan: Brother Chen, what would you like to eat tomorrow?]
[Shen Yuming: Are you cooking?]
[Yu Yan: Mom and Auntie will cook, and there will be cherry small cakes.]
[Shen Yuming: Anything, I’m not picky.]
[Yu Yan: No problem, no problem, I don’t really know how to cook. The last time I made fried chicken wings, the skin was all blackened and the inside was still bloody.]
[Shen Yuming: Overcooked.]
[Yu Yan: I guessed so, I haven’t tried cooking again since.]
[Shen Yuming: Are you home yet?]
[Yu Yan: Not yet, why?]
[Shen Yuming: It’s inconvenient to type with one hand.]
[Yu Yan: I’ll call you when I get home.]
[Shen Yuming: Okay.]
They were only about ten minutes from home, so Yu Yan put his phone away.
“Xiao Yan, Uncle Zhou’s daughter is back from abroad. How about we arrange a meeting for you two in a couple of days?” Yu Chen said in a deep voice.
Jiang Moxi followed up, “She’s an interesting girl, you can chat and see how it goes.”
The conversation between mother and son was quite telling, it didn’t seem like a casual mention.
This “meeting” and “chatting” weren’t as simple as they sounded, and Yu Yan immediately felt alarmed.
“There’s no need for that, I don’t know her, and I don’t have anything to talk about.”
“How can you get to know her without meeting? It’s just chatting, no one’s forcing you to do anything.” Yu Chen insisted.
Yu Yan’s tone softened, “Is this… an arranged marriage?”
“You’re around the same age, so you should have things to talk about.” Yu Chen paused for a moment before continuing, “There’s also Aunt Zhao’s daughter. You’ve talked before, and got along well.”
It’s definitely an arranged marriage!
Whether it was Uncle Zhou’s daughter or Aunt Zhao’s daughter, both had studied abroad since middle school and only just returned to China after graduating from college. Yu Yan didn’t think they had anything in common with him.
Yu Yan sniffed, his tone heavy as he said, “I don’t like it.”
“How do you know you don’t like her when you haven’t even met her? What kind of person do you like?” Yu Chen glanced sideways, somewhat expecting Yu Yan to give a specific standard, but also worried that Yu Yan might name someone he didn’t want to hear about.
Yu Yan frowned, “I don’t like this feeling. Matters of the heart depend on fate, you can’t force it. I don’t want to do an arranged marriage.”
His attitude was firm, even refusing to meet her.
Jiang Moxi eventually relented, “If you don’t like it, then it’s fine. Mom and your brother just mentioned it, but in the end, it’s up to you. However, if you do like someone, you have to tell Mom.”
“Okay, thanks, Mom.”
Yu Chen was still not giving up, “Do you have any suitable girls around you? Maybe you can try getting to know them.”
“No.” Yu Yan shook his head in refusal.
“Not even one?”
“Not even one.” Yu Yan repeated seriously, “Bro, stop worrying about my matters. Focus on preparing for your wedding with Sister Xi Yuan.”
Yu Chen didn’t speak. He just stared as his younger brother opened WeChat again and started chatting with Shen Yuming, his eyelids twitching.
