Fu Bao woke up feeling hungry after a nap, her little eyes still bleary from sleep. She wanted to wait for her mom to come feed her, but when she opened her eyes, she saw an unfamiliar face staring down at her, looking way too serious.
That look… it was like a sly, calculating wolf!
This little boy might be cute, but there was something off about the way he was looking at her.
“Wah—” Fu Bao instinctively let out a loud cry.
Huo Jinxi, “….”
This little thing! Was she crying just because she saw him?
Meanwhile, outside, the adults chatting happily froze when they heard Fu Bao’s loud wail. Old Lady Shen nearly jumped out of her skin. “NanNan is crying!”
Lin Xiujuan hurried to her feet and quickly apologized to Jiang Meilan. “I’ll go check on her. She’s probably hungry.”
Jiang Meilan nodded, still smiling as she heard the energetic cry. “Go ahead, go ahead. The baby’s important, don’t let her go hungry. But wow, listen to that cry. She’s really something, huh? Jinxi, don’t you want to see the little girl? Shall I take you to see her? Jinxi?”
Jiang Meilan called a few more times with no response. That’s when she realized—her son had disappeared.
Where did he go?!
Old Lady Shen was the first to make her way to the back room. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Huo Jinxi, the little boy, lying at the edge of Fu Bao’s crib, poking her face with his pinky finger. Wait a minute. Isn’t that the Huo boy?
Could he be the one who made her cry?
A protective surge rushed through Old Lady Shen’s heart. Fu Bao was her treasure, and no one—especially not some little boy—was going to intimidate her. No, not even a single hair could be harmed.
Resisting the urge to slap Huo Jinxi, Old Lady Shen quickly pulled his hand away and glared at him. “Don’t you dare scare Fu Bao, or I’ll throw you out.”
Huo Jinxi pulled his hand back, clearly annoyed, then shrugged and stepped back, letting Old Lady Shen scoop Fu Bao into her arms, calming her as the baby continued to sob.
Held tightly in her grandmother’s embrace, Fu Bao started to settle down, realizing it was her grandmother holding her. Her little hand grasped Old Lady Shen’s wrist.
Fu Bao didn’t really want to cry, but the instincts of a tiny baby had kicked in. Seeing a stranger and feeling hungry had just set her off.
Old Lady Shen’s heart softened, knowing that Fu Bao had been frightened by the Huo boy, and she felt a flash of anger. She whispered comforting words and then turned to Lin Xiujuan, who had entered the room. “Fu Bao must be hungry. Hurry up and feed her.”
“Okay, okay.” Lin Xiujuan quickly took Fu Bao from Old Lady Shen and carried her to the bed. After drawing the curtains, she undressed the baby and began feeding her.
Meanwhile, Huo Jinxi stood silently, his face serious as ever.
This little girl was still just a baby, barely a month old. How long until she grew up? What kind of future was she waiting for?
But then again, he had come to this mortal world just for her, abandoning his usual business. Ten more years didn’t seem so bad. After all, ten years here felt like only ten days in the Demon Realm.
Thinking about it, time here was longer, which meant he could spend more time with Fu Bao. And honestly, that wasn’t such a bad thing.
As Old Lady Shen held Fu Bao in her arms, she cast a look at Huo Jinxi, who seemed disgusted and was clearly avoiding her. He didn’t want anyone touching him, not even a little old lady!
Except for Fu Bao, of course. He had no problem with her touching him.
