Chapter 67: They Were the Knots in Her Heart, the Sins of Her Past Life:
Busy times always pass quickly. When the sky began to lighten with the first hints of dawn, Tang Mi finally stopped what she was doing.
“It’s morning. I should go back now. I’ll bring medicine for you all tomorrow. As for the remaining few patients, I’ll treat them another day.”
She had started by treating the gravely ill. Fortunately, the rest only had minor ailments, so it wouldn’t be a problem to wait a day.
“Thank you, divine healer.”
“Thank you, kind benefactor.”
Hearing that she was leaving, everyone knelt and bowed their heads in gratitude.
“Get some rest, everyone,” Tang Mi said to them, then walked over to a corner and gently touched Yu’er’s thin little face. “Tomorrow, big sister will bring you something to eat.”
“Thank you, fairy sister.” Hearing there’d be food, Yu’er’s eyes lit up.
Tang Mi smiled at him, then left the City God Temple.
Guixi quickly followed after her. “Girl, let this old man take you back.”
“I’m tired. Carry me on your back,” Tang Mi said, uncharacteristically acting spoiled. She really was exhausted.
“Such a spoiled brat!” Guixi scolded her, but he still turned around and squatted so she could climb on.
Tang Mi lay on his back, mumbling, “I’m a girl, why can’t I be spoiled?”
“Alright, alright, missy. This old man will carry you home,” Guixi replied in a tone of mock surrender, but his face was full of indulgent affection.
He carried Tang Mi out of the city and headed toward Baima Temple.
Lying on his back, Tang Mi felt especially at ease.
Had Master ever carried her like this in her past life? Probably not. This time around, she was certainly more fortunate than before.
Not only did Tang Mi feel content, but Guixi also felt something stir in his heart.
He was already over a hundred years old. Since she had entered the monastery in her past life, he had never had feelings for any woman again. As a result, he never married nor had children.
This little girl was so young, if he had married early, perhaps he would have had a granddaughter around her age.
For the first time, Guixi felt the warmth of family. Perhaps it was time for him to find someone to pass on his legacy.
In the shadows, Ye Chenxuan watched Tang Mi’s peaceful expression with a trace of envy for the old man.
Guixi walked swiftly and soon brought Tang Mi back to the old, dilapidated temple.
Seeing the sky growing lighter, Tang Mi picked up her food container. “It’s almost dawn, I should head back.”
“Wait, girl, don’t go yet. This old man has something important to tell you,” Guixi quickly stepped forward, looking at her pitifully.
Seeing his expression, Tang Mi guessed what he wanted to say. She teased, “Tell me tomorrow. I’ll be back, and remember to prepare the medicine for me.”
Then she playfully winked. “You’ve been watching from the back all along, so you should know what I need.”
Guixi shot her a displeased glare and huffed, “So I’m just your little medicine boy now?”
“Well, you’re the one who sent me to treat people,” Tang Mi said, pouting, and walked off with the food container.
Watching her figure disappear, Guixi called out, “I’ll be waiting here tomorrow, you must come!”
Tang Mi didn’t respond and simply kept walking.
Guixi gave a helpless, bitter smile. This girl runs off too fast. Tomorrow, I’ll definitely ask her.
When Tang Mi returned to the northern wing room, it was nearly morning.
After a night of exhausting work, she didn’t even have the strength to speak and went straight to bed.
Ban Xia felt deep heartache seeing her like this, and was also worried, not knowing where Tang Mi went each night.
Fortunately, they had informed Madam Tang earlier, so no one came to disturb Tang Mi. She even missed lunch while sleeping.
Ban Xia didn’t dare wake her and let her rest well into the afternoon.
Only after Tang Mi woke did Ban Xia prepare food for her.
“Miss, what exactly do you do when you go out at night? Is it dangerous?” Ban Xia hesitated for a long time before finally asking.
“I’m making up for the regrets in my life,” Tang Mi said blankly, before slowly beginning to eat.
In truth, every step she took now was to make up for the regrets of her past life: her grandmother, Feng’er, her maternal family, her master… They were all knots in her heart, sins from her previous life. She had to unravel each one to atone.
Ban Xia didn’t quite understand what Tang Mi meant, but dared not press further.
“How are things with Tang Ying and Tang Rong? Any news from the second branch lately?” Tang Mi asked after finishing her meal.
“Nothing unusual,” Ban Xia quickly replied. “Fourth Miss is still at Baima Temple. The Second Madam has been taking care of her. They say her condition is not good. The Old Madam has asked a few times for a physician, but they haven’t called anyone. I think Fourth Miss is probably pretending.”
Tang Mi smiled faintly. Given Tang Rong’s condition, it wasn’t convenient to call a doctor. But did Qin-shi and Tang Ying know that?
Something like this, Tang Rong might not have told them.
Just then, Ban Xia added, “Oh right, this morning, Madam Qin came to Baima Temple too. She supposedly came to greet the Old Madam, but the Old Madam didn’t see her.”
Madam Qin?
Tang Mi narrowed her eyes. Why did she come? Did Tang Ying bring her?
What was Tang Ying up to? Surely she wasn’t seriously planning to marry into the Qin family?
Tang Mi rose and went to Madam Tang’s room.
When the Old Madam saw her, she immediately smiled warmly. “Had a good sleep?”
Tang Mi bowed respectfully and sat down shyly. “It’s so peaceful here, I always oversleep.”
The Old Madam gently brushed her hair and said affectionately, “You haven’t married yet, so it’s fine to sleep in as much as you want.”
Tang Mi blushed. Her grandmother never missed a chance to bring up the topic of marriage.
Seeing her flushed face, the Old Madam patted her hand with a smile. “You’ve been here for days and haven’t gone out. I hear the Prince of Yu isn’t around today. Why not take the chance to go out for a walk? Don’t stay cooped up inside all the time.”
If the Prince were here, she wouldn’t be at ease letting her go out. But she had heard that he left early and wasn’t at Baima Temple now.
Tang Mi’s eyes flickered slightly, then she nodded obediently. “Alright, I’ll take Ban Xia out for a look around. That girl’s been so bored.”
“Go ahead.” The Old Madam nodded.
Tang Mi got up, bowed, and left with Ban Xia.
The two made their way toward the main hall of Baima Temple.
They had been here several days, but aside from lighting incense on the first day, hadn’t visited the temple again. It was indeed time to offer incense once more.
Just as they entered the courtyard, they saw a man and woman talking in hushed voices under a ginkgo tree, both smiling affectionately in a clearly romantic manner.
Tang Mi recognized them instantly, Tang Ying and Qin Qingyu.
She wasn’t surprised to see Qin Qingyu. Since Madam Qin had come, it wasn’t unusual for him to be here as well, especially since Tang Ying was staying at the temple.
What intrigued Tang Mi was Tang Ying’s demeanor laughing and chatting so sweetly with Qin Qingyu. What exactly was this woman thinking?
