Chapter 72: Turning Silver into Gold, Encountering an Immortal
Tang Mi thought he had bought buns and accepted the cloth bag, ready to distribute them to the beggars. But when she looked inside, she realized the bag was full of flour.
“What’s this?” Tang Mi was stunned.
Guixi gave her a sideways glance and scolded, “It’s so late, the bun shop already sold out. I only managed to buy two sacks of flour; there’s another bag outside.”
Tang Mi was instantly dumbfounded. “You bought flour? But you can’t just eat this raw!”
“That’s why I also ‘borrowed’ some oil, salt, and scallions from the bun shop. Why don’t you make scallion pancakes for them?” Guixi said while staring at Tang Mi longingly, already drooling.
Tang Mi looked at him, speechless. Was it really for the beggars? Or was he the one craving food?
She looked up and saw the expectant faces of the beggars. Tang Mi didn’t know what to do.
From the shadows, Ye Chenxuan overheard Guixi asking Tang Mi to make scallion pancakes. His expression immediately darkened. He ordered Yan Shu, “Go get thirty buns. Now.”
“Now?” Yan Shu looked miserable. If the old man couldn’t find any, how was he supposed to? Even if the palace cooks made them fresh, it would still take time.
“Now!” Ye Chenxuan glared.
“Yes, sir.” Yan Shu didn’t dare argue and hurried off.
Looking at the hungry beggars, Tang Mi gave in to Guixi.
Actually, she was also worried. If they didn’t eat soon, they might fight over the fish and candied sweet potatoes.
Tang Mi went outside and efficiently began mixing dough and making pancakes.
Guixi, perhaps driven by his own gluttony, helped enthusiastically, fetching water, moving tables, even kneading the dough.
The beggars in the temple were shocked to see the divine healer also knew how to cook. One by one, they came out, watching curiously.
Tang Mi was fast and skilled. Soon, the aroma of scallion pancakes wafted through the air.
As the rich fragrance spread, everyone involuntarily swallowed their saliva.
Even Guixi nearly drooled.
This smell, it was downright deadly!
“Girl, let me try one first, for the sake of the others,” Guixi couldn’t wait and reached toward the pan, only for Tang Mi to slap his hand away.
Tang Mi scooped up two pancakes and waved to Yu’er.
Yu’er swallowed hard and quickly ran over.
Tang Mi wrapped the pancakes in paper and handed them to him. “One for you, and save the other for your mother when she wakes up.”
“Thank you, immortal sister.” Yu’er was already starving. He grabbed the pancakes and ran inside.
Tang Mi watched his little figure with a smile. Then she turned to see Guixi sneakily munching on one pancake, and could only shake her head helplessly.
One after another, the pancakes came out of the pan. Tang Mi distributed them all to the beggars. She spent nearly two hours using up the two sacks of flour.
Every beggar received a scallion pancake. Crisp and fragrant, they were especially delicious. Though they’d had scallion pancakes while begging before, never had they tasted anything like this.
No doubt about it, it was food made by an immortal. It was the best thing they’d ever eaten in their lives.
Some couldn’t even bear to eat it and hid theirs away.
After distributing everything, Tang Mi gave a few extra pancakes to the elderly and sick. Yu’er also got two more.
Once everything was done, the pair left the Chenghuang Temple.
Just after they departed, Yan Shu arrived, lugging a massive cloth bag. “My lord, I’ve got the thirty buns.”
“Too late. She’s finished cooking already,” Ye Chenxuan replied unhappily.
Yan Shu froze, looking pitifully at Ye Chenxuan. “I searched everywhere and couldn’t find any, so I returned to the palace and had the chefs make them. You know that takes time…”
He blinked at Ye Chenxuan. “What should I do with the buns? They’re fresh and still warm.”
“Give them to the beggars,” Ye Chenxuan said with a frown, then leapt off to chase after Tang Mi.
Left with no choice, Yan Shu slung the large bag over his shoulder and went to hand out buns.
Guixi and Tang Mi returned to the broken-down temple. Tang Mi began packing up her food containers to leave.
“Girl, do you live at Jingyue Nunnery or Luoma Temple? How am I supposed to find you in the future?” Guixi asked.
After all, he was her master now, he couldn’t not know where she was from.
“I’m Tang Mi, from the General’s Manor. On the first and fifteenth of every month, I’ll be at Chenghuang Temple for free consultations. If you need to find me, you can send a message to the General’s Manor or wait for me at the temple,” she said, waving goodbye as she left.
Guixi stared blankly after her.
From the General’s Manor? Last name Tang?
Suddenly, he burst into laughter. So the girl wasn’t a maid after all.
“You’ve finished memorizing the medical texts, but you still need to reinforce your knowledge. I’ll quiz you next time we meet!” Guixi shouted after her. “And bring a roasted chicken next time, I’m sick of vegetables!”
Tang Mi’s eye twitched. This old man really…
With a helpless smile, she carried her food box back to Luoma Temple.
At the entrance, the young monk saw her and greeted her warmly, “Miss Ban Xia, you’re back.”
“Mm,” Tang Mi responded wearily.
The young monk quickly opened the gate.
As she passed by, the monk suddenly blushed and asked shyly, “Miss, may I ask you something?”
Tang Mi gave him a strange look, quickly lowering her gaze to avoid being recognized. “What is it?”
“Did you give me a small silver ingot the other day?” he asked awkwardly.
“Yes,” Tang Mi nodded.
Hearing her answer, the young monk froze.
He had received silver the other day and it really had vanished. He thought he was dreaming, but the more he thought about it, the more suspicious it seemed. So he asked.
Tang Mi thought he wanted more, so she pulled another ingot from her waist pouch and handed it to him. “Take it, young master.”
Then she walked into the north wing.
“Wait,” the monk called out, flustered, but she had already gone too far to hear.
A cold wind blew through, and the young monk shivered. Instinctively, he looked down at the silver in his hand.
But this time, it had turned into a gold ingot!
The monk collapsed to the ground in shock.
Silver turned into gold?! Could Miss Ban Xia be an immortal?
Tang Mi knew none of this. She returned to her room and immediately collapsed onto the bed, too tired to say a single word.
Ban Xia saw how exhausted she was and dared not disturb her. She simply stood guard through the night.
She slept all the way until noon the next day, when the Old Madam of the Tang family sent Yunxiang to summon her, saying there was something important to discuss.
Tang Mi didn’t think much of it and followed Yunxiang. But instead of taking her to the Old Madam’s residence, Yunxiang led her to the main hall of Luoma Temple.
When she arrived, the second and third branches of the Tang family were already present, even the rarely seen Tang Shuanghu was there.
Master Jingkong, the abbot, was also waiting.
Tang Mi’s eyes flickered slightly before stepping forward to greet them. “Master Jingkong. Grandmother.
