The salted fish substitute just wants to lie down Chapter 23

After hearing Liang Xianzhang’s words, Zhou Yi’s first reaction was that he knew about his relationship with Shang Yichen.

“I know about your relationship with him.”

Zhou Yi, once again having his thoughts guessed, stared at him in a daze. For a moment, he couldn’t find the words to respond.

Zhou Yi remained still, his eyelashes casting soft shadows under his eyes, making him look particularly vulnerable and pitiful.

Liang Xianzhang felt an overwhelming urge to kiss him but held back, afraid that it might scare him. Instead, he gently touched Zhou Yi’s head and said, “I’ll keep your identity as an Omega a secret. If you’re ever in heat, you can come to me for help anytime. I won’t let him find out.”

Liang Xianzhang deliberately avoided mentioning Shang Yichen’s name, simply referring to him as “him.”

Zhou Yi looked at him for a long time, surprised by his offer. Throughout his life, he had always been alone and never expected anyone to offer help. Yet, here was Liang Xianzhang—whom he had barely known, and with whom he had shared only a handful of intimate moments—offering to assist him.

No matter how he looked at it, Zhou Yi felt that he and Liang Xianzhang came from completely different worlds. Why would someone like him help someone like me?

Zhou Yi couldn’t understand why things that seemed to have no intention or appeared to be unrequited were, in reality, so dangerous. It was a lesson he had learned long ago.

Logically, he shouldn’t believe it. But perhaps because the hand that had touched his hair was so warm, Zhou Yi found himself wanting to trust him, despite the fears he had long carried.

Maybe… this person can be relied on?

The thought startled him, and Zhou Yi felt a rush of panic at the idea.

When he was in the orphanage, he had been adopted several times. Each time, he thought he had finally found someone to rely on, that he no longer had to face a life of loneliness. But no matter how well-behaved he was, how much he tried to please the families who adopted him, it was never enough. Eventually, he was always sent back to the orphanage.

As he grew older, the chances of being adopted again dwindled. Zhou Yi realized, with painful clarity, that relying on others meant preparing for abandonment.

He couldn’t allow himself to depend on anyone. Otherwise, the pain of being abandoned after having high expectations would crush him.

Because of this, he had never allowed himself to feel that he could rely on anyone—until now, with Liang Xianzhang.

This thought sent a wave of panic through his chest, making him want to escape. Zhou Yi quickly moved, standing up abruptly and avoiding the hand that had been gently stroking his hair. He huddled in the corner of the bed, his voice shaking as he said, “I… I’m leaving.”

Liang Xianzhang’s hands tightened into fists, his heart aching at the sight of Zhou Yi’s panic. “Why? Didn’t you promise me you’d stay tonight?”

Zhou Yi shook his head, his voice low and trembling. “I think it’s better for me to go back. This isn’t the place I should be. I’ve already received so much help from you, Mr. Liang, and I don’t want to trouble you any further.”

With that, he lifted the quilt and made to get out of bed, but before he could move, Liang Xianzhang suddenly pulled him back into his arms.

“Look at my face. Do you really think I’ll let you leave?” Liang Xianzhang’s voice was cold as he grasped Zhou Yi’s chin, forcing him to look up. “And Xiaoyi… do you realize how strong the pheromone smell on your body is? Are you planning on telling everyone that you just slept with an Alpha?”
