Chapter 8: Tai Chi Qin Changhui
Haining University was built adjacent to the Xijiang River. Step out of the campus, cross a road, and you arrive at the grand dike of the Xijiang. Not far along the embankment, you could see a row of villas facing the river. Being close to the river’s mouth where it met the sea, the Xijiang here was incredibly broad. The morning mist and the colors of dusk often attracted people to stop and gaze at the scenery.
Yayun Homeland, the most expensive high-end villa area in Haining City, was unparalleled. The community had a total of only 36 villas, each uniquely designed by renowned architects, blending classical and modern styles. It could be said that everyone residing in Yayun Homeland was among the top echelons of Haining City.
After leaving Ai Ziyin’s rented place, Li Chen had come directly here. Seeing elderly people practicing Tai Chi in the morning had made him want to visit his Tai Chi master from his previous life.
Li Chen didn’t enter through the main gate of the community. For a high-end area like Yayun Homeland, a stranger’s entrance would be cumbersome. Scaling the wall was much more convenient. Dodging the extensive surveillance cameras on the external wall, Li Chen reached a section of the wall next to the riverbank and casually placed one hand on it.
Taking a deep breath, Li Chen suddenly exerted force. In a flash, he soared more than three meters high, effortlessly scaling the tall perimeter wall to land silently on a clean, winding cobblestone path inside the community.
The villas in Yayun Homeland were predominantly dark reddish-brown. Despite the incorporation of various modern architectural styles, the extraordinary creativity and intricate layout still exuded an air of classical elegance. Under the dancing shadows of the trees, the villa community seemed exceptionally peaceful.
Following his memory, Li Chen leisurely arrived in front of Building 17, where his Tai Chi master Qin Changhui had lived in his past life. Through the yard wall, he could see the warm, yellow light inside.
After five hundred years, seeing this familiar villa again brought a complex mixture of emotions to Li Chen’s heart.
Arriving at the doorstep, Li Chen adjusted his breath to calm his tangled thoughts, then stepped up and rang the doorbell.
Ding-dong!
The door opened quickly, and out stepped a man in his thirties, dressed in black martial attire, well-proportioned. Seeing Li Chen at the door, the man seemed slightly startled, obviously not expecting a stranger at this hour.
“Hello, may I ask who you’re looking for?” The man greeted with a faint, polite smile.
On the other side, Li Chen’s eyes flickered coldly for a moment.
He’s here, too!
The man who opened the door was named Miao Shipeng, Li Chen’s senior disciple brother in his previous life and the most prized disciple of Qin Changhui.

However, it was the betrayal of this prized disciple, Miao Shipeng, that had led Qin Changhui to lose everything. He had even become a broken man and ultimately passed away in obscurity.
“What are you daydreaming about?” Noticing that Li Chen had remained silent, a trace of impatience flashed in Miao Shipeng’s eyes.
“Is Mr. Qin in? I wish to become his disciple,” Li Chen replied calmly, gathering his thoughts.
Originally, Li Chen had come just to visit Qin Changhui, but he had changed his mind. As a person who believed in reciprocating kindness, he couldn’t stand by knowing that Qin Changhui would be harmed.
In his previous life, Qin Changhui had protected Li Chen. This time around, Li Chen intended to protect Qin Changhui, ensuring that he wouldn’t suffer at the hands of evil people.
Miao Shipeng’s expression subtly changed upon hearing this. He looked Li Chen up and down before showing disdain and scoffed, “Become a disciple? My master doesn’t just accept anyone.”
“I wish to become a disciple of Mr. Qin, not you. Why the unnecessary talk?” Li Chen retorted coldly.
Every year at this time, Qin Changhui would open his doors to new disciples. The selection was entirely up to Qin Changhui, and even Miao Shipeng had no right to interfere.
However, in his past life, it had been Miao Shipeng’s secret meddling that led Qin Changhui to accept Li Chen’s eighth senior brother that year. This eighth senior brother was utterly loyal to Miao Shipeng and had played a significant role in Qin Changhui’s tragic end.
This time, Li Chen was determined to thwart Miao Shipeng’s plans.
Though Li Chen had wanted to cripple Miao Shipeng on the spot, he knew he couldn’t act on that impulse. Fighting with his potential master’s favorite disciple upon first meeting would not be regarded as a visit or a request for apprenticeship; it would be akin to causing a scene.
As Li Chen spoke, a flash of anger crossed Miao Shipeng’s eyes. With fewer reservations than Li Chen, he snapped, “Kid! You’re quite audacious! Looking for a fight, are you?”
“Shipeng! What’s going on? Why the noise?” A commanding voice emerged from within the house.
The voice belonged to Li Chen’s Tai Chi master from his past life, Qin Changhui. Perhaps disturbed by Miao Shipeng’s loud voice, Qin Changhui sounded somewhat displeased.
“Master, it’s nothing. There’s someone here who wants to become your disciple, but he’s extremely rude. I’ll handle it,” Miao Shipeng instantly became courteous and called toward the inside of the house.
Soon, the sound of subtle footsteps could be heard, and a middle-aged man with greying temples appeared behind Miao Shipeng.
It was Qin Changhui, Li Chen’s master whom he had not seen for five hundred years.
Although Qin Changhui was ultimately just an ordinary person, he had several identities that were quite eye-catching.

A Tai Chi Grandmaster! In his youth, Qin Changhui had served as special security for China’s leadership. Later, he had assumed the role of Secretary-General for the International Martial Arts Federation and Director of the Wushu Center under China’s General Administration of Sport. He was currently a specially-appointed professor at Haining University.
Qin Changhui had sealed his lips and said nothing. His authoritative gaze had swept over Li Chen, revealing nothing of his inner thoughts.
“Master, this young man snuck into our home late at night to become your disciple as if he’s up to no good. There must be something fishy!” Miao Shipeng had stood behind Qin Changhui, speaking respectfully.
Hearing this, Li Chen’s brow had furrowed slightly. His senior brother was really good at seizing opportunities to make a point.
“I have the honor of meeting Master Qin. I am a freshman at Haining University and have come out of respect for your reputation. Please forgive my abruptness,” Li Chen had said with a bow.
Li Chen had been well aware that Qin Changhui had always valued the conduct of his disciples; thus, he hadn’t engaged in any argument with Miao Shipeng.
Regardless of future developments, at that moment, Miao Shipeng had still been Qin Changhui’s most favored senior disciple.
As expected, Qin Changhui had nodded approvingly. He had never been fond of excuses. What had mattered was clarity and straightforwardness.
“Shipeng, jot down his information. Have him come to the martial arts hall early tomorrow,” Qin Changhui had left this instruction and turned away, disappearing at the doorway.
Miao Shipeng had shot Li Chen a dark look and snorted, “Kid! Even if Master accepts you tomorrow, I won’t make life easy for you. If you’re wise, you won’t show up to make trouble for yourself!”
Upon hearing this, a faint smile had crossed Li Chen’s face. Whether he would have good days ahead remained to be seen, but Miao Shipeng’s good days had certainly come to an end. After all, Li Chen was aware of quite a few of Miao Shipeng’s unsavory dealings.
