Chapter 16: “Your Engagement with Susu”
Not only was Tang Zhishu puzzled by the old man’s reaction, but so were Jiang Jinyan and Mo Jinhan.
On the other hand, Yan Kui remained calm, as if he had expected Tang Cangxiao to react this way.
Tang Cangxiao soon realized his reaction was too strong. He quickly suppressed his shock and panic, forcing a smile as he said, “Haha, what’s wrong with me? I just didn’t expect that old man Yan Yuhen would have such an excellent grandson.”
Hearing her grandfather’s explanation, Tang Zhishu nodded but remained doubtful, her brows furrowed.
Seeing his granddaughter deep in thought, Tang Cangxiao swallowed hard, feeling guilty. He turned to the others and said, “Zhishu, you take care of Jinyan and the others. I have some questions for this young man from the Yan family.”
Tang Zhishu’s curiosity deepened. “Grandpa, is there something I shouldn’t know?”
Tang Cangxiao forced a casual smile. “Oh, silly girl, there’s nothing. I just wanted to ask how that old thing Yan Yuhen is doing lately. Now go on, take Jinyan and the others to eat something.”
After saying this, he looked at Yan Kui with a friendly smile and said, “Young man Yan, let’s go over there and chat.”
Yan Kui caught Tang Cangxiao’s sly wink.
He smirked slightly, nodding and replying in a calm voice, “Okay.”
As she watched the two walk away, Tang Zhishu felt that her grandfather was hiding something from her.
“Jinyan, are you hungry? Shall we go eat something?”
At that moment, Mo Jinhan looked at Jiang Jinyan with gentle eyes and asked.
Jiang Jinyan turned to him, noticing something unusual in his dark eyes.
She paused, then understood.
Turning to Tang Zhishu, who was still frowning at the direction of her grandfather and Yan Kui, she said, “Zhishu, what are you thinking? Let’s go eat; I’m a bit hungry.”
Tang Zhishu reluctantly returned her gaze and set aside her doubts for now, nodding at Jiang Jinyan. “Okay, let’s go eat.”
After the three of them reached the dessert area, Tang Zhishu stepped away for a moment.
After she left, Jiang Jinyan asked Mo Jinhan, “Love, why did you want me to bring Zhishu here?”
Holding a glass of red wine, Mo Jinhan replied, “Didn’t you notice that Tang Cangxiao is hiding something? Especially after learning that Yan Yuhen is Kui’s grandfather; he seemed a bit flustered. Interestingly, Kui’s reaction seems to show he expected it, so they must be discussing something that Tang Zhishu shouldn’t know about.”
Jiang Jinyan frowned. “If that’s the case, shouldn’t we let Zhishu know?”
Mo Jinhan gently rubbed her head, smiling affectionately. “Don’t worry. I won’t do anything to hurt Tang Zhishu. If he wanted to hurt her, he wouldn’t have let her go so easily.”
Jiang Jinyan was surprised. “Yan Kui let Susu go on purpose?”
Mo Jinhan nodded. “Yeah. Otherwise, do you think he would let her escape so easily after catching her?”
As Jiang Jinyan remembered how Zhishu escaped from Yan Kui’s mansion, she realized it had indeed been too easy.
Meanwhile,
Tang Cangxiao brought Yan Kui directly to his study.
The atmosphere in the study became serious.
Tang Cangxiao sat at his desk, dressed in a traditional outfit, with a stern expression and sharp eyes fixed on the young man across from him.
Sitting on the sofa, Yan Kui crossed his long legs, his fingers casually tapping the armrest.
After observing the young man for a while, Tang Cangxiao found a good impression of him.
To remain calm under his intimidating presence showed that he was not an ordinary person.
“You say you’re Yan Yuhen’s grandson?” Tang Cangxiao said with a cold grunt.
Yan Kui slowly raised his half-closed eyes and looked at Tang Cangxiao.
With a calm and handsome face, he replied in a deep, casual tone, “That’s right.”
Tang Cangxiao stared at him sharply. “Your grandfather never attended my birthday banquet. Why did you suddenly come this year?”
Facing Tang Cangxiao’s question, Yan Kui chuckled lightly. “It’s not really sudden. A few days ago, I attended my brother Mo Jinhan’s wedding, and at the end, there was a little incident. I unexpectedly found a jade bracelet.”
Indeed, when Tang Cangxiao heard the words “jade bracelet,” his expression tightened as he stared at Yan Kui and asked, “Do you have that jade bracelet?”
He realized that this young man was clearly prepared.
He probably already knew about the engagement from years ago.
Yan Kui smiled and shook his head. “No, I’ve already returned it to your granddaughter, who is also my fiancée.”
As soon as Yan Kui mentioned “fiancée,” Tang Cangxiao’s expression darkened.
However, he couldn’t deny that he had personally arranged that engagement. Even though he was unwilling now, he had to acknowledge it.
What worried Tang Cangxiao most was whether Zhishu would be angry and refuse to recognize him as her grandfather once she learned about the engagement.
With a troubled look, he said to Yan Kui, “Since you know Zhishu is your fiancée, I won’t hide it from you. Over the years, Zhishu has been unaware of the engagement between you two.
If she suddenly finds out, she might not be able to accept it. So, could I ask you not to tell her for now? Wait until the right moment to let her know; it will be easier for her to accept then.”
His main concern was that if Zhishu learned that her marriage was a result of his gamble, she would surely be upset.
Tang Cangxiao feared nothing, but he dreaded his granddaughter getting angry.
Yan Kui raised his eyebrows, seemingly not surprised.
“Since you’ve brought it up, as a younger generation, I will naturally do as you say,” he replied with a faint smile.
Hearing his agreement, Tang Cangxiao felt relieved.
He glanced at the time and noticed that twenty minutes had passed.
If he didn’t go out soon, Zhishu would start to suspect something.
“Yan kid, I’ll go greet the guests. Feel free to do as you like.”
Yan Kui nodded. “Okay.”
Then, Yan Kui returned to the banquet.
At that moment, he saw Tang Zhishu standing alone, frowning and seemingly lost in thought.
The man raised an eyebrow and walked over to her.
Just then, Tang Xin, who had a bruised face from being hit, saw Tang Zhishu and twisted her face in hatred.
But suddenly, she noticed Yan Kui approaching and realized who he was.
She had heard he was the grandson of her grandfather’s rival.
Thinking of something, a fierce look flashed in Tang Xin’s eyes.
The next moment, she headed toward Tang Zhishu.
Caught up in her thoughts, Tang Zhishu didn’t notice the two coming toward her.
As Yan Kui was approaching, Tang Xin pretended to stumble and crashed into Tang Zhishu.
Caught off guard, Tang Zhishu was knocked backward.
In that instant, Yan Kui quickly caught Tang Zhishu.
Tang Xin watched this scene with satisfaction.
She had heard that Yan Kui was cold-blooded and cruel.
Now that Tang Zhishu had offended this man, she was curious to see what would happen.
Tang Xin feigned surprise and said apologetically, “Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to bump into you.”
Being embraced by the man, Tang Zhishu felt that this embrace was somewhat familiar.
After regaining her balance, she quickly turned to look.
But upon seeing Yan Kui’s face, her heart sank as their eyes met.
Damn you, Tang Xin!!
Even if you want to harm me, you can’t use this kind of trick!
Looking at the man in front of her, Tang Zhishu felt like she was doomed…
