Aunt Wang couldn’t find her tongue anymore and didn’t know what to say.
Because of this delay, it was already late in the evening for dinner. In order to save lamp oil, Aunt Wang asked the family members to eat in the yard with their own bowls. It was not cold outside and it was still cool. When they looked up, they could see the stars and the moon, so they couldn’t smell the food.
While the Wangs were eating multigrain porridge, they saw people coming and going outside the yard. First, it was a man, and then a woman. They looked like they were going to the Lis. Aunt Wang’s husband couldn’t sit still. He had clearly confirmed the thirty-six stones, but he still wanted to go and see what was going on. He drank the multigrain porridge in a few gulps and followed with a steamed bun in his mouth.
Aunt Wang’s face fell in the moonlight, but no one noticed as they were all listening to the noise next door.
The yard of the Li family next door.
The tables and chairs in the main room had not been moved back yet. Since the village chief left, they had planned to eat outside for the whole day. The light was bright. After the family of three finished their meal, Li Zhouzhou cleaned up the dishes, and his father and husband moved the tables and chairs. Gu Zhao had just brought a stool into the main room when there was a noise in the yard that someone was coming.
Uncle Wang next door and his eldest son.
In the end, the table was not moved back. Gu Zhao also moved the stool that was taken back to the main room back, and also took the low wooden stool that was nailed at home in winter. I am afraid that there will be more people in a while.
As expected, the gate of the Li family’s courtyard never stopped. Li Da was very happy today. He held a large teapot and drank tea. He greeted the visitor with a smile. By the end, he was familiar with the words and did not wait for the visitor to speak: “Look for yourself, the door is not closed, count it yourself.”
”It was my Zhao’er’s idea.”
The men who came first were all from the village. They spoke directly and only praised others a few words, but they were mainly shocked. They stood at the door of the granary on the side house of the Li family, looked around with their eyes wide open, and then gave Li a thumbs up.
”I have never seen so much harvest from nine acres of land in my life.”
”This acre of land has four stones.”
Li Da showed his teeth and smiled so happily that the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes were revealed.
Later, some aunts and uncles came to see what was going on. They were the ones who came with their husbands, and they spoke in a very different way, unlike those men who kept talking about having good fields, good land, and being capable.
”When Zhou Zhou was born, I said this child was blessed. Look at Zhou Zhou, he is good at housework and outside work, he is good-looking, with long legs, nice waist and beautiful figure. He found a husband, Gu Shulang. Oh my god, it’s really what I said before.” Auntie put her thumbs together, “They are a perfect match.”
This is just nonsense. This was not the view of the villagers at the beginning.
What a Li Zhouzhou, he is so unlucky, he looks like a thin tree, bald without a butt, and it looks difficult to give birth.
”That’s right. In our village, whoever has Zhou Zhou is lucky. Li Da loves Zhou Zhou very much. He offers 18 taels of silver to be the first to recruit a son-in-law. And look at our son-in-law Zhou Zhou. Gu Shulang is handsome, a good student, and loves Zhou Zhou very much. Now he can do farm work. I think he is good in every way.”
This compliment is reasonable, but it was a waste of money to spend 18 taels of silver to find a son-in-law for a boy. Look at it, you will regret it, and you won’t find anything good.
Li Zhouzhou felt embarrassed when he heard these compliments, not because he was shy, but because he had heard those unpleasant things before, and he didn’t feel that his uncle and aunt really thought he was good-looking and blessed with these compliments. Maybe it was because of the good harvest of crops from the fields?
The fields in the village are the source of harvest. All the food and expenses throughout the year depend on the fields.
This is everyone’s lifeline.
Li Zhouzhou knew in his heart that this was the first time he was praised. He had never been praised like this even when he got married. No one said anything bad. But when he saw his husband talking to everyone with a smile and responding to the compliments as usual, he lost his restraint.
What does it matter if outsiders say good or bad things? He doesn’t live for these words from outsiders.
Therefore, Li Zhouzhou did what he was supposed to do. He openly invited several uncles and aunts to drink tea, listened to the compliments, and occasionally responded with “No way”, “Not bad”, “I’m happy”, and his father also supported him.
Everyone was drinking tea and praising him, saying a lot of nice things until their mouths were dry. Finally, someone brought up the topic: “… Zhou Zhou, you were also raised by Auntie, and you are a good child. So, how do you make the fertilizer for your dry fields?”
They were talking in loud and lively voices just now, but now they lowered their voices involuntarily. They were still talking, but their eyes were glancing over here, trying to find out what the recipe was.
Although it is not a proper question to ask, just like Uncle Wang’s tofu at the entrance of the village, they are all making money. If anyone asks or inquires, they will be gossiped. Uncle Wang has a bad temper and will definitely not tell anyone, otherwise it will ruin his business.
