The four children in the west room were talking without anyone in the main room knowing.
Gu Zhao fed Fubao half a bowl of porridge and half a bean paste bun, then stopped feeding him. Li Zhouzhou had almost finished eating, so it was his turn to hold Fubao so that his husband could eat in peace.
”Our good Fubao can eat with one hand, right?” Gu Zhao spoke in a soft voice, following what his son said.
Fubao in his arms laughed and followed his father and said “four ducks, four ducks”.
Li Zhouzhou held Fubao in his arms and deliberately asked, “Are four ducks, four ducks?”
Fubao’s round eyes were blank for a moment, and he shook his head and nodded, talking and gesturing. The adults all laughed when they saw it, and Li Da was very protective and partial to him, saying, “Whatever our Fubao says is true.”
After the meal, Li Da carried Fubao to the back to look after the lambs. He looked at them in the morning and evening. After looking after the lambs and the ewes, he would talk to them in a mumbled voice. Only then could Fubao sleep peacefully and without making any noise.
”Sheep said he had eaten and drunk enough, and asked if Fubao had eaten and drunk enough?” Li Da asked Fubao.
Fubao was in his grandfather’s arms, holding up his finger and saying, “Good duck, good duck.”
”Our Fubao said that he has eaten and drunk well. He ate half a red bean paste bun and drank half a bowl of porridge. The lamb and the mother sheep don’t worry about Fubao anymore.”
The ewes and lambs are bleating in the sheepfold.
In this way, the grandfather and grandson talked with the mother and son for more than a quarter of an hour. When it was getting late, Li Da carried the giggling Fubao back to the main room, washed up, and went to bed.
After Fubao was washed, he was thrown on the big bed. Gu Zhao watched after he finished washing. He sat on the edge of the bed to block the way. Seeing Fubao walking with a clattering sound, he kept falling because of the mattress on the bed and he walked unsteadily. He couldn’t help but think of the modern walkers. He became interested and started to measure his son’s height and ordered a small wooden cart to be used as a walker.
After washing, Li Zhouzhou looked after the four children in the west wing. There were some missing mattresses on the beds, so the two of them squeezed into one quilt to make do, and then do it later. When he came back and saw his husband holding Fubao and drawing something, he knew that he had added something for Fubao again.
”What are you drawing?”
”Fubao’s stroller is for learning to walk. I thought since I’m going to make it, I might as well use it for both learning to walk and as a stroller, so there’s no need to waste it.” Gu Zhao made an adjustment on the drawing.
Li Zhouzhou looked at it carefully and said, “When my husband finishes the painting, I will take it to the store to ask the master.”
”Yes, it still needs to be adjusted by the old carpenter.” Gu Zhao put the blueprint down and carried Fubao and Zhouzhou back to bed first. The family of three talked and played for a while, and then coaxed Fubao to sleep in the crib not far away.
In the days that followed, Li Zhouzhou became busy. He looked after the yard with a shop front, ordered meal boxes, searched for duck channels, and bought cloth and cotton to make uniform clothes for the four of them. They were all brown and navy blue, which were durable and resistant to dirt.
My husband said he would just make an apron to cover the entire front half of his body, with the words “Li Ji Lu Zhu” embroidered on the apron.
Liu Shu also came over to teach the four people the etiquette of doing things and speaking, and how to receive guests.
In this way, more than half a month passed quickly. Gu Zhao was also very busy during this half a month. He worked and read books. He went to Liang’s home every day to visit his teacher. He asked the teacher when he didn’t know something. The teacher answered his questions and gave him homework and some book lists for him to read.
I said before that Gu was too busy to sit down and have dinner with the four children.
There is another happy event.
The book revised by Gu Zhao and Yan Jinxin was sent to the official printing bookstore for printing and sale. It was considered an official reading textbook. Gu Zhao and Yan Jinxin named it, and they both had the right to sign it.
Yan Jinxin thought about putting the name of the saint before the revised book, but that would make the name too long, so he rejected it after he said it himself.
Gu Zhao thought of the past “Five Years of College Entrance Examination and Three Years of Simulation”, and finally suggested: “Why not call it “Three Years and Two Tests”, and if we want to subdivide it later, we can follow my second brother’s idea, but use surnames. For example, for Confucius, we can use the word Kong. Our revised book is about the three great Confucian scholars, Kong, Zhang, and Bai, so how about calling it “Three Years and Two Tests [Collection of Confucius scholars, Kong, Zhang, and Bai]?”
”Okay, this way readers can see the book titles at a glance.” Yan Jinxin readily agreed.
The two of them proofread the manuscript, and an official came to collect it for printing. Gu Zhao was busy with this recently. This was his first time publishing a book – co-published with his second brother, and he was very concerned about it and even designed the cover himself.
Yan Jinxin was confused when he heard that Zhaodi was also going to design the cover. Isn’t it just a title for the book? Just write the name like other books, so why does it need a cover?
Gu Zhao said, “There are some more details. When I did it before, we reviewed that there were other adults who did articles here. These names had to be added. I decided to leave them in the back of the book.”
There are too many of them printed on the front cover and it won’t look good, so putting it on the back cover is also a way of giving face to my colleagues. When I make books in the future, my colleagues will definitely be happy to “be on TV.”
When writing the preface, Gu Zhao also asked the teacher to make recommendations, and asked his second brother whether he should ask Lord Shi. Yan Jinxin felt that the teacher would definitely not be happy to write these, because the content of the book was revised and relatively simple.
As a result, Master Shi first approached Yan Jinxin, because when Master Shi heard his old friend say that he wanted to write a preface, he said with a serious face, “What Sun Mu’s disciple has, you must also have.”
After hearing about this, Gu Zhao secretly told his second brother, “Although Lord Shi has a gloomy face all day long and is very harsh on you in your studies, I didn’t expect that he is actually protecting you.” This is all about comparison.
Yan Jinxin’s confidence was soft inside, but he still looked serious on the outside, “Don’t talk about the teacher behind his back.”
”I didn’t say anything bad.” Well, the second brother also defended his teacher.
After the first book was printed, the bookstore gave ten copies to the Hanlin Academy. Gu Zhao left one for his teacher and took one for himself and put it on the bookshelf in their review room. Lord Zhao and Lord Tian came to join in the fun, but they took the book upside down. When they saw their names at the back, they exclaimed a little.
Thanks again to: Hanlin Academy reviewers Zhao He, Tian Yuming, and Liang Ze (in no particular order) for providing some reference articles and novel arguments for this book.
Liang Zizhi already knew about it, and now he just watched the others exclaim. After the exclamation, the Lord Zhao, who was always upset, now looked relaxed and happy. He even ran to Junior Brother Gu’s desk and said, “Lord Gu, if you need to write an article next time when you revise the book, just ask.”
”Great, Lord Zhao really cares about the scholars of the world. He is a role model for us.” Gu Zhao smiled and flattered Lord Zhao.
What a great opportunity to become famous.
Liang Zizhi thought that his junior brother Gu was really good at being an official. If he was a little more cunning, he would not be in the eyes of him and his teacher. Now was just the right time.
At the Wanshou Festival banquet, Chu Ningyuan slandered the teacher behind his back, and Liang Zizhi heard about it. Junior Brother Gu was able to stand up and defend the teacher’s innocence. He was not afraid of power and was courageous.
After hearing this, the teacher felt comforted, and when the junior fellow came to him to write the preface, he readily agreed.
This book is well done and very clear.
Liang Zizhi nodded in his heart as he flipped through the book. At the beginning was the preface written by Mr. Shi and the teacher. Mr. Shi’s writing was sharp and serious, while the teacher’s was lively and bright. Later, there was a table of contents, which told what was on which page, making it very convenient to flip through the books.
There are excerpts of original words from sages and great scholars, as well as examples of articles and opinions written by colleagues. It is easy to understand at once.
Good book.
After reading it, Liang Zizhi felt something moving in his heart.
The “Three Years and Two Examinations” caused a small sensation in Beijing. Originally, scholars praised it, saying, “This is a good book. It was compiled by the top two scholars in the Hanlin Academy. It also contains articles written by the masters of the Hanlin Academy. Go buy it quickly. It’s very good.”
”It’s a real bargain to have so many adult essays in one book.”
“Good book, good book.”
But as soon as this wind started blowing, it immediately changed its meaning. It became that the Eighth Prince was worried about the high cost of books for poor scholars in the world, so he specially ordered several adults in the Hanlin Academy to edit the book, which led to the creation of this book.
This is all thanks to the Eighth Prince.
This news blew up so strongly. It was originally a matter passed down by word of mouth in the cultural circle. It seemed that overnight, storytellers, scholars, and candidates in major restaurants were discussing it. The more they talked, the more excited they became. In the end, it became known that he was the legitimate son, the eighth prince, of an orthodox family, filial and virtuous.
Although it was not said explicitly, the meaning was almost revealed.
The eighth prince is qualified to be the heir apparent.
Zheng Hui came specially at noon. The three of them went out to talk. Zheng Hui was worried about the two of them. He said quickly and impatiently, “I know that the original intention of the two of you to write the book is definitely not to build the reputation of the Eighth Prince, but now the rumors are spreading more and more in that direction. Don’t let the emperor be reluctant to part with his son and use you two to go out to make trouble.”
