Chapter 15: Why Don’t You Just Go Die?
Ye Huihui: “!!!”
Sure enough, as soon as Ye Huihui heard those words, she was so infuriated she could barely maintain her composed expression.
Even the corners of her mouth twitched involuntarily a few times.
Seeing this, Ye Muqi only became even more delighted. She was in such a good mood that she cheekily winked at Ye Huihui.
“Pretty sister, your smile is so beautiful.”
The little girl Ye Huihui had brought along earlier was completely enchanted by Ye Muqi’s smile.
Ye Muqi looked down with a smile at the girl who had run to her side and gently patted her little head.
“Thank you, you’re very pretty too,” she said warmly.
The little girl grinned, her missing front teeth showing, then bravely hugged Ye Muqi’s leg. “You’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen—just like a fairy from the heavens!”
The other children watching nearby also wanted to get close to the “pretty sister” after seeing how kind and approachable she was.
Watching the children from her class fawn over Ye Muqi, Ye Huihui was so angry she felt like her heart might stop.
“Didn’t you say you wanted to talk? Let’s go.”
She couldn’t stay here another second listening to people praise Ye Muqi’s looks—she might just explode on the spot!
There was a small river in Bada Town called Guanyin River. After a few heavy rains earlier this month, the river had swelled, and the current was quite strong.
Lost in her thoughts, Ye Huihui simply followed Ye Muqi. As they arrived near Guanyin River, the sound of rushing water suddenly snapped her to her senses.
Oh no!
She realized—Ye Muqi brought her here to get back at her for pushing her into the river last time, didn’t she?
What a vicious woman!
It was dusk, and the sky was growing darker. There wasn’t a single person nearby.
If someone really got pushed into the river now, no one would see it.
“Y-Ye Muqi, what are you trying to do?” Ye Huihui grew nervous, her voice trembling slightly.
“Don’t be so tense,” Ye Muqi said with amusement at her reaction. “I just wanted to ask you—did you go see Rong Jingchen last night?”
So it was about that.
Ye Huihui licked her lips. She had thought this was about the incident with the river.
“Yes, I went to see Captain Rong,” she admitted without hesitation. “You should know what kind of person you are. I just don’t want him to bring a completely useless waste like you to the military district. That would be a disgrace to Bada Town!”
Since Ye Muqi was leaving anyway, Ye Huihui didn’t bother pretending to be her “sister” anymore.
Hearing her self-righteous words, Ye Muqi chuckled lightly.
“My husband doesn’t care, so why are you, an outsider, so pressed?” she mocked.
In the end, it was all because Ye Huihui didn’t want Rong Jingchen to take her to the military district. So she dressed it up with all these lofty-sounding reasons. Like anyone even cared about this tiny town.
Ye Huihui: “……”
Damn it!
She really was pressed!
“Captain Rong doesn’t even like you!” Ye Huihui snapped.
“I know. But we’re legally married,” Ye Muqi said calmly, her eyes sweeping over Ye Huihui. “If you’re that desperate for a man, go find your own. Don’t go chasing after someone else’s husband. Aren’t you afraid of disgracing Bada Town?”
“You—!” Ye Huihui’s chest heaved violently.
Hearing Ye Muqi bring up their marriage repeatedly only added fuel to her rage. Everyone in town knew how that marriage came to be.
“Ye Muqi, you’re no better than me, are you?” she shouted. “If you hadn’t tricked Captain Rong, how would he have ended up marrying you?”
“But the fact is, we’re already married. What does any of this have to do with you?” Ye Muqi shrugged, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
“……”
Ye Huihui’s heart ached even more.
It was true—while Ye Muqi had schemed shamelessly, Rong Jingchen had still taken responsibility and married her. He even filed an official report. It wasn’t fake.
“You… you only have a better family and a pretty face, that’s all—”
“Isn’t that enough?” Ye Muqi interrupted before she could finish the insult. “I’ve got a good background, looks, and a great figure. Plenty of people would kill to have that.”
“Like you, for example?”
“……”
Ye Huihui bit her lip, her eyes filled with rage and jealousy as she stared at Ye Muqi.
Yes—Ye Muqi had money, a nice home, loving parents, beauty, and even a lovely name. Her mother had been an educated youth, unlike Ye Huihui’s illiterate parents. Now, even Captain Rong was willing to build a life with her.
She had often wondered—why couldn’t she have been born as Ye Muqi?
Unnoticed, Ye Muqi had wandered closer to the edge of the riverbank. Seeing this, a dark thought surged through Ye Huihui’s mind.
Last time, Ye Muqi had been lucky. But there hadn’t been anyone around on the way here…
This time—
There’d be no one to save her.
If Ye Muqi died, not only would she not be going to the military district—she’d lose everything she currently had.
Ye Huihui clenched her fists, face growing darker as she slowly moved toward Ye Muqi.
It had been easy last time. This time would be no different…
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Ye Muqi asked with a light smile after a long silence from Ye Huihui.
To Ye Huihui, that smile was nothing short of provocation.
“I said—why don’t you just go die!” Ye Huihui stood in front of her, her voice cold and venomous.
“?”
Ye Muqi looked surprised, but subtly shifted her footing, edging even closer to the river.
Suddenly, Ye Huihui reached out and shoved Ye Muqi’s chest.
Ye Muqi’s lips curved into a faint smile.
You lose.
Her body suddenly felt weightless—but instead of the expected push, she was yanked into a warm, firm embrace.
Eh?
Ye Muqi looked up in confusion and saw a familiar face.
She had only called her parents here. Why was Rong Jingchen suddenly there?
Wait—when did he get here?
She wasn’t the only one stunned—Ye Huihui was also shocked. The moment she saw Rong Jingchen, she quickly pulled back her outstretched hand.
Panic overtook her as she grabbed at the hem of her clothes and stumbled backward several steps.
D-Did he see that?
“You—how did you…” Ye Muqi was the first to recover and instinctively tried to pull away from Rong Jingchen’s arms.
